Why didn't Poland hand over Danzig to Germany (Short Animated Documentary)

video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Germany demanded numerous territorial concessions from basically everyone in the lead up to World War 2. Everyone gave them exactly what they wanted until Poland who said no to the return of Danzig and some territory called the 'Polish Corridor'. So given that everyone had caved in to Germany's demands up until this point, why was that Poland was the first to refuse

The title is absurd, because Poland could not hand over this city to the Germans at all. Because Poland didn't own this city at all. Because this city was a city-state under the protection and oversight of the League of Nations and not of Poland. Furthermore, the claim is outrageous and does not correspond to the truth that Poland was supposedly a dictatorship. Polish democracy was to a certain extent injured but Poland was still a democracy with a government determined by an elected parliament. But the Germans actually demanded parts of the Polish state and they knew Poland would never agree to. But all territorial claims were otherwise just a pretext from the Germans. They just wanted to provoke a war. Because they wanted to conquer all of Poland and not just have parts of Poland. Unfortunately, they also managed to conquer all of Poland in 1939 because of the betrayal by Poland's allies. After the conquest, they then began the genocide of the Polish population. But they wanted to conquer not only Poland, but also all Soviet territories up to the Ural Mountains. They succeeded in conquering large territories of the Soviet Union and began the genocide against the Slavic nations there too. They also committed genocide against the Gypsies and Jews in the conquered territories. This was all according to their Generalplan Ost in English Master Plan for the East. This was the genocidal plan for all Slavic nations whose lands they wanted to conquer and colonize.

The Poles thought Poland was a regional power. The leadership (Sanacja) thought that Germany only outnumbered Poland militarily by a factor of two, which was supposed to give us time to gradually withdraw from Gdansk, Gdynia and Poznan to the Central Industrial District of Warsaw. We thought we could wage a maneuver war using cavalry, which was to be armed with anti-tank rifles. Our army was already falling apart by day two, and by day seven it was the de facto end. We had no telephone cable, our command communication system flew on messengers, and horses were massacred even by the Panzer I. In general, the army lived the legend of defeating the Soviet Union in 1921 and thought that horses would compensate for steel and machine guns. Also, it was thought that Poland, with its very poor infrastructure, would be a very difficult terrain for German tanks to cross. As time has also shown, none of this happened.
The best thing to do would have been to adopt static fighting, dig in bunkers, create a system of fortresses such as the Poznan fortress or the Modlin fortress but along the lines of the Mannerhaim Line or Stalin's line at critical points. Of course, we would have lost anyway, because the Germans were not twice or three times stronger than us, but ten times. Propaganda and poor foreign policy lost us then and I fear it will lose us again.

I've got be honest this whole conversation & debate over how the British & French did nothing to stop the nazis from invading Poland & left them too their fate wrongly is frankly a load of nonsense & ridiculous! Firstly we'd just had millions of our men killed 20yrs prior in the defence of a country that pretty much hated us so we wasn't exactly in a hurry to do it all over again, secondly y was up too us to defend Poland when as stated on here Poland felt they didn't need to do anything if the British came to their defence etc! Y didn't they re-arm like France & Britain did leading up to it We didn't abandon them as once it kicked off we declared war & rescued the Polish government & as much as the military as possible, all we got for that was millions more ppl killed again & absolutely ruined our country for decades afterwards which lead to our the lose of our empire! We wasn't responsible or either did we do anything wrong so look at the factsas we cudnt of done much anyway as we hadnt had enough time to build our forces uo by them & needed time!

I hate how people pretend like the so called appeasement was somehow the worst decision ever made. It’s easy to say that with hindsight but these men were trying to stop another major war (which would become the worst in history) and they were going to try and stop it from happening at all costs. The war and its aftermath caused the decline of Britain that has worsened ever since.

Its never mentioned in popular history, but Poland is a real villain in the interwar period.
For example, they had invaded Germany in the 1920s as well. To the point that the Allies had to fight the Polish military to ensure that fair elections were held in Silesia. So there was a lot of pride on the line to fight the Germans. Again.

There was another, more important reason why Poland couldn't afford to give up Gdansk. Had we lost access to the sea, we would have foregone our God given right to make fun of the Czechs and their lack of access to the sea, which has been central to our Polish identity from time immemorial.

Britain and France told Poland to say no, and all Germany asked and had acquired from the point was German land made up of ethnic Germanic people. Kinda odd how they didn't declare war on also Soviet Union for attacking Poland they just hated Germany for what it had achieved to that point.

First time I’m disliking your video in a while. It’s about Britain chucking around guarantees of borders they have no intent to defend. That’s the main issue in all this not whatever you mumbled about. There are other issues with tone all throughout the video too ex Memel.

Very clear as always. For 2025 I would love to see a few topics with vintage, back to the origins, titles, such as:
- How bloody was Bloody mary
- How Great was Great Moravia
- How Mughal (Mongol) was the Mughal Empire
- How much of a navigator was Henry the Navigator

West wasn't ready. And France and UK used air force and navy. Borderd between Germany and France was highly build up. Which later was also proven - without Netherlands and Belgium in war, France and UK were powerless to try to do anything more at that time.

It’s really funny seeing nationalists try to defend their nation’s actions in the comments section of your videos, only to be destroyed by widely known historical facts and basic logical reasoning. It always serves as an entertaining encore to the video.

The Polish army did not want to give up any piece of land without a fight, so it was dispersed. Additionally, France and Great Britain believed that it would be a slow war (not a blitzkrieg) and that they would be able to help in time.

Tell the 20, 000 martyrs of Katyn forest that their betters made the right choices, had the Poles worked with the Germans, communism would have died a timely death and Europe would be transcendant today instead of being in it's death throes

because when Czechoslovakia gave up its danzig, it got attacked and occupied anyway.
when you give up to a bully a small thing, she will come back the next day with a bigger demand. and the next day with another, bigger demand.

For context: Poland mobilised over 1 million troops during the brief battle against Germany
There is no way any of the other nations Germany invaded could have mobilised even half that, much less in only the span of a month

It’s really funny to see the animated characters of Polish leaders knowing really well how they actually looked (as a Polish history nerd and having looked at them for the past 3 months on my history class. Peak artistry
reply

What a bunch of bs there were numerous tries by germany to make a deal with poland especially since the poles committed brutal crimes against ethnic germans in poland, something that this video completely ignores
reply

This exactly the kind of politically correct pack of lies that you illiterate, dumbed down suck on
that results in all of you being brainwashed your brain being filled with misinformation and outright lies.

reply

1. Because Danzig wasn't Polish - it was Free City under League of Nations, with token polish Presence 2. Because results varied. 3. 2: 16 - RE-Asserted and technically, we broke even with Bolsheviks, not SU.
