Cape gooseberry is native to Peru and grows as a semi-wild wild plant in highlands between 1. 500 and 3, 000 m. a. s. l. Its origin is assumed in the Peruvian Andes, as the Incas cultivated it in their -royal gardens-. but after the Spanish conquest, like other crops disappeared. -
Because it is considered a fruit that prevents scurvy, it was introduced in South Africa by the Spaniards more than 200 years ago. From there it moves Kenya, Zimbabwe, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and India, countries that are grown commercially. Currently, cape gooseberry is found in almost all the highlands of tropical countries and in several subtropics including Malaysia, China and the Caribbean countries, among others. -
In Colombia, the world's leading producer of cape gooseberry, followed by South Africa, no varieties have been selected and only ecotypes or plants from different regions or countries are known, which differ in size, color and taste, the shape of the calyx and the bearing of the plant. Currently, three types of cape gooseberry are grown from Colombia, Kenya and South Africa. The Colombian cape gooseberry is characterized by having a better coloration and higher sugar content, characteristics that make it more palatable in the markets.

Every time I got them from the supermarket fresh I wasn't that impressed with the flavour. But I buy some dehydrated ones and they taste amazing. Never had the jam I bet thats great too.
