Hi Richard, thanks for the comment. I have traveled on the original Overlander in Jan 2006 and the current train 2012. In just that short period there have been many changes. Your first trip in 1973 must have been very different. I would love to go back in time and see the line just before electrification. I purchased a copy of 'Wellingtons Railways - Colonial Steam to Matangi' The history of the Johnsonville line and the many deviations around Porirua make very interesting reading.

Most of the trip was taken from the Northern Explorer, but some of the shots looking forward between Wellington and Waikanae were taken from a local train I travelled on the day before, hence the blue sky, not cloudy as on most of the trip. The part with the steam locomotive was just added for interest. The new train is a credit to Kiwi Rail serving the tourist market well, but it must be frustrating for locals who's stations it no longer calls at.

Nicely done. There have been a few changes since I first did the trip back in 1973, e. g. Britomart instead of Strand at the Auckland end, assorted deviations, including Mangaweka. (now where did I put that photo taken from the Silver Fern as it travelled across the now demolished Mangaweka viaduct)

thanks for the trip; I especially liked the inserts you put into the vid early on and of course naming places. that reminded me of a day trip in Honolulu, we were getting the swing of pronouncing things when 'pipeline' came up. we thought, aha, pi- pi-li-ni but no, it was pipeline road: )

Is it only me that finds it odd that the derails protecting the main line end abruptly in disaster, one goes into a pile of gravel that would send the train over the side and onto the rocky coast below, and another would send the train crashing thru someone's back yard and house.

Is the future of this train in doubt? I have often wondered why it does not feature in British touring holiday itineraries for New Zealand, where as the Tranz Alpine is often included. I hope you have a great in New Zealand, it's well worth visiting. Tim.

Hey, Thanks for the Trip! It looks like the Bulldozer has missed most of NZ. I have relatives in Palmerston North, Hawera, New Plymouth, etc. I noticed that the Graffiti Artists have not missed some of the Freight Cars in NZ. Thanks again,

This was agood and superduper video bt external music has dampened the watching because the sound from wheels andsounds of waves was diminished. Hope you rectify, overall it was good video

I enjoyed the vdeo but it would be true to say that it included reverse running too? Afternoon clips interspersed with morning clips? Not knocking it, just entertained!
