How To Fix A Leaking Rear Axle (Replace Axle Seals) If you have a leaking rear axle, it is important to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage to your vehicle. Here are the steps to fix a leaking rear axle: 1. Safety First: Make sure to park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Additionally, wear protective gloves and eyewear to ensure your safety during the repair process. 2. Identify the Source of Leak: Determine whether the leak is coming from the rear differential cover or the axle shaft. Look for any visible signs of fluid and try to trace it back to its source. If you are unsure, consult a professional mechanic. 3. Replace the Differential Cover Gasket: If the leak is coming from the rear differential cover, it is likely due to a faulty gasket. To fix this, drain the differential fluid by removing the differential cover. Then, clean the mating surface of the differential and the cover. Install a new gasket and reattach the cover. Finally, refill the differential fluid according to the manufacturer's specifications. 4. Inspect the Axle Shaft Seal: If the leak is coming from the axle shaft, it could be due to a failed axle seal. In this case, you will need to remove the axle shaft(s) from the differential assembly. Inspect the seal for any signs of damage or wear. If necessary, replace the seal with a new one. Reinstall the axle shaft(s) and ensure they are properly seated. 5. Refill Differential Fluid: Once you have addressed the leak, refill the differential fluid to the appropriate level. Use the recommended fluid specified by the vehicle manufacturer. 6. Test and Monitor: After completing the repair, take your vehicle for a short test drive to ensure no leaks are present. Park the vehicle on a clean surface and inspect for any signs of fluid leakage. Monitor the area regularly to ensure the leak does not reoccur.
