How to use RTV and properly make a gasket

Learn how to use RTV to make a rear differential gasket, waterpump gasket, oil pan gasket, thermostat gasket, valve cover gasket, or whatever needs a gasket but you cant find a gasket. Using this method will help make sure you seal whatever you are working on, properly. If you dont use the RTV gasket maker correctly then you can get a leak and all that hard work was for nothing. Here is the RTV I used

This stuff is awesome when used properly. Years ago, had a valve cover leak on an 89 Tempo. They did not sell the replacement silicone insert for the valve cover, just the complete valve cover for 500. The dealer warned me that a flat aftermarket gasket would not work. Right they were. Used this stuff & it was still good when I scrapped the car years later. A few years later, took my crown vic to a quick lube shop for an oil change. They guy runs in to show me all the magnetized fuzzies sticking to the differential fill plug. I said yah, go ahead and change it. What I didn't know is that they used RTV sealer instead of a gasket. The Dufus immediately tightens down the cover, fills it and sends me on my way. Months later, I notice a noise which I find out is coming from diff. Much of the gear oil leaked out. I fixed it myself, following the procedure you described. About 5 years later, all good. Moral of the story, if they tell you they can do this job in half an hour, they would be wrong. Probably a couple of hours do do it properly with RTV.

Couple things on this video, as a ford tech I can tell you.
If you use MotorCraft grey silicone TA-29 Ultra Silicone, there is NO waiting period. Once applied to the desired surface you have 4min to torque that component to its mating surface before you have to scrape and start over.
Fords spec for a bead is 3. 5mm which is far thinner than what is specified in this video. That said this video is fine for the application and indeed most applications, save for the different cure procedure. You can actually get away with about a 2mm by 2mm bead in most applications. For example an oil pan where the pickup is sealed to the block with silicone RTV, your going to want to try and use the exact amount of silicone because if you squeeze an excess amount of silicone into the pickup passage leading to the oil pump, your gunna potentially have a bad day with the high pressures in that galley leading to the pump, combined with heat cycling etc, you risk clogging something down the galley circuit (cam bearing oil feed etc.

I know old vid, but thought Id pass on a little trick o the trade. Any time youre trying to align parts like this, especially with gaskets os rtv,
Make some short pieces of all thread a couple inches long, screw in 2-3 of however many to capture the piece. Then slide it onto the all thread. Itll keep it aligned all the way home. Stick bolts in empty holes, then just remove all thread and replace bolts and done. Painless!
Works everywhere theres room to use them and is better than an extra set of hands!

Wow thank you man! I installed a water pump with blue rtv gasket maker and I didnt give it 15 min to dry up a little instead I installed it right away and I did do everything else like hand right and let sit for an hour and then torque it to spec, but then the next day when I added the coolant it leaked bad lol well now I know what I did wrong thank you so much for uploading these how to videos

Great video! I find the easiest way is to put red Permatex on the cover, same with a valve cover. Then lay the gasket onto the Permatex, let it dry, then install. Never put Permatex between the gasket and engine, or in your case, the differential. Thanks for making and posting this video. Thumbs up and new sub.

RTV is a bad choice for this application. You got it nice and clean but the bolt holes have oil in them and it will leach into the sealant and deteriorate the seal. Better to use a gasket and shellac type sealant on both sides of the gasket. Unless you really don't care if it leaks.

The way i learned to do it was just back all th bolts oit half way then just squirt a whole tube in ther being sure to leave large lumps and little un filled areas then tighted all the bolts back up til half of them are stripped out and then your done.

Go to the Prematex website The high temp red ATV is incorrect for gear oil. Apparently, gear oil will dissolve the red ATV and cause leaks.
The correct Prematex RTV for differential covers is the Green product.

Hey CrissFix, for 2005 F-150, for rear diff, which RTV or gasket maker would you recommend? I was thinking to apply gasket maker first, then put gasket on top of that so it won't fall and then screw the bolts

I like all your Videos, but I notice here that you didnt mention to make sure the surface that you put the silicone on, needs to be squeaky clean.
I use Carb Cleaner to clean something like a rear end cover.
