How to Change Rear Differential Fluid #02 (Summary, Quick Version) Mathew: my jeep laredo 2007 has a humming noise from the front differential. the fluid is new. Since we never use the 4 wheel drive option, is it recommended to remove the drive shafts to get rid of the noise? or should we check the transfer case fluid level as well cos thats the only point left to be inspected!

I know you take your time to put these videos to help other people such as myself who knows very little about cars. What you also do is give people the push to try and do these things themselves instead of going to the dealer and pay their high cost. I truly appreciate the time and effort you take to do all these videos to give us an option of doing these things ourselves or taking it to a dealer. I also want to say as Dr. Ronnie Pace said 5yrs ago in his post, you do an amazing job communicating on how to do these fixes in a clear and concise way, so the average Joe Schmo Like Me can do this. Thank you Chris.

Hi Chris,
I looked under my car (2014 Kia Optima) and I dont see the differential gear box. I looked at my manual and there is no mention of differential. How does one Change the differential fluid if we dont see a differential box or know what oil to use because its not listed in the manual?

reply

How about actually cleaning out the residue of oil oil in the diff. using brake cleaner. and a good rag? I would think that cleaning out the differential is good for the gears. and gives you completely fresh oil when you fill up. I'm surprised you didn't do that.

do you need to have the rear end raised when doing a differential or manual transmission oil change? would it mainly have to be at ride height? say I have a 2 level on the rear of the truck so would I need to lift it to where ride height would be?

Thanks for your videos. I did mine buy just using a pump and hose to remove the fluid and then pumped new fluid back in. Took about 5 min. Not as thorough as your method but it is good enough for my old car to have 90-95% of the fluid changed.

One good idea is to always UNSCREW the fill plug before you take the back cover off and drain it. If that fill plug doesn't come out or gets stripped after you drain it you won't be able to drive your truck to a garage.

hard to find gasket? thats the same looking 8. 8 rear diff i have in my ranger and i went to auto zone and paid 10 for the gasket? unless its a weird thickness or something

so glad all my sumps have drain and fill plugs. my last vehicle did too. seems to be my former domestics that make my life hard. cheaper too, no gaskets

After the hour has passed to allow RTV to dry can it be driven or do I have to wait the full 24 hours for it to fully cure before driving the vehicle?
