New Mercedes E-Class review: The most high-tech Mercedes EVER!

This is the all-new Mercedes E-Class! Mat s flown over to Vienna to take a closer look at Mercedes s BMW 5 Series competitor, and he s about to find out just how much the E-Class has evolved over the previous generation. Starting with the design, it s fair to say it looks pretty similar to the previous edition. Starting around the back, it looks pretty smart with a chrome strip running along the whole of the car, along with a pair of smart-looking three-pointed star lights. So it looks pretty good, although it s let down by some incredibly fake-looking exhausts! Along the side, the new E-Class is available with alloys that range from 17 to 21 inches, and it has some sleek pop-out door handles. Head round to the front and the E-Class comes with an all-new grille, however, the overall design is still pretty similar to the last gen. Step inside and the changes are much more noticeable, starting with the huge super screen that stretches across the entire dash! It comes with three screens, with digital dials for the driver, a bespoke screen for the passenger, and a central infotainment screen. You can download third-party apps such as TikTok and Zoom, while the driver s display comes with all-new 3D effects! You ll find high-quality materials throughout the majority of the cabin, although there are a few cheaper bits of plastic to be found. The seats are also pretty comfortable, and there's loads of headroom and space for passengers in the back. There are several engines to choose from. The entry-level is the E200, which is available as either petrol or diesel and comes with a 2-litre turbo engine that delivers around 200hp. There s also an E450 that s equipped with a 3-litre straight-six turbo that can put down 380hp. Then there are a couple of plug-in hybrids available, with the range-topper being the E400e which comes with a 2-litre turbocharged engine coupled with an electric motor that can put down 380hp. All cars come equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, and the plug-in hybrids come with a 20kWh battery which is good for a range of up to 70 miles. Mercedes hasn t confirmed the price yet, but you can expect it to start from around 50, 000. But will it be worth it? You ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Hi Matt - I recently rented the new GLC with the same MBUX system. There were a few issues you may not have encountered in your car.
1) On a hot day, after leaving the car to sit around in the sun for an hour or so, Android Auto was lagging and bugging, ultimately disconnecting. It started to work again after the car cooled off (15-20 min into the journey.
2) The car sensors assumed I'm getting into a crash 3 times albeit we were nowhere near danger. This caused the car to do a full emergency stop in city traffic, thankfully, drivers behind us were switched on and stopped in time. The same thing happened twice when the other driver was driving the GLC, and him being a new river was driving very very in line with the law and kept more distance than anyone else would.

Not to mention all the idiotic sensors used in these types of car for the lazy idiots who don't know how to open a fing boot. Anybody ever seen what happens when the sensors get old and begin to fail? It's massive dealer repair costs or the boot starts unlocking on its own. Just like all electricals on a car shit gets old and fails and is costly to repair just to get your warrant to keep it on the road. And if you are thinking that's for the person who buys it after me don't be fooled these sensors fail a lot and and after short term ownership as well.

I'm pretty disappointed with this car, to be honest. The quality just isn't there compared to other manufacturers that aren't even in the same category, also hate to burst Mercedes's bubble but that privacy screen technology to stop the driver from looking over at the passenger's screen has been around since the facelifted L322 range rover. It's a shame that interior tech is prioritized over material and build quality look at the flex on the rear climate control display at 8 minutes into the video. Unless this is detachable it's shocking!

Hey I m a 28yo and I have an e400 coupe. It s not just for old people. With regard to the new one, it s not as good as the old one. I guess it s the best interior design to come from MB lately, but the super screen is a useless gimmick. I would prefer the wood trim and metal buttons instead of capacitive. Maybe they will get rid of the capacitive touch and gaudy taillights in the facelift - then it will be a worthy sidegrade to the W213 generation.

Anybody tried to drive with the sun shining on one of these digital displays? Lets just say its the same as trying to read a tablet on the beach in summertime its so washed out as to be illegible. Please car manufacturers of the world stop trying to give me Star Trek. I don't need the idiotic and hideous look of digital screens in my car I need to see how fing fast I'm going.

I will admit I fast forwarded to driving part of the video but even there I did not hear comments glowing enough to warrant a go right ahead and buy verdict rather than the more fitting Shortlist verdict. And I didn't hear why this car is better than the competing 5 series. Matt, you would have needed to address that, I think, in order to go straight for the Buy verdict.

The interior is a let down. Till previous model the air vents were beautifully embedded in that gorgeous horizontal wood. It was perfect below the screens where it should be. In this E class the seats, internal door design, sunroof switch, drivers digital display is straight away taken from the C class. Except from the front looks, i am disappointed by everything.

The last e-class that actually felt premium was the W210 way back in the 90's/early 00's. A shame it rusted buckets and had a quite ugly exterior. Mercedes needs to go back to their roots a bit, on this it just seems ridiculous how all the places you touch either has cheap materials, cheap functionality or both.

I wonder who thought that
More screens = more Luxury?
Ngl the interior looks like shit apart from the centre console the dash is shit, the speedometer is shit basically everything else is shit i miss the 2013 where cars look really luxurious now all they look are Chinese cars rip off you know. The shit quality

75% software lecture and 25% on the actual important aspects of buying a car. I assume as most sales will be on 3-year lease deals, that buyers are no longer interested in the mechanics, drivability and reliability of the vehicle. But it has Zoom so that is all right then.
reply

It s not a proper Mercedes Benz without a hoot ornament. Sorry but it just looks tacky too me.
Mercedes have lost the plot when it comes to design. It s all too bland & boring. Also it way too tech heavy which I hate. It is just a glorified German taxi

reply

I saw it last year, from first it wasn't that much impressive. But now after couple of month's i like it very much.
For tech pepole like me its a dream come true.
I would only like to test drive it
Maybe MB Sindelfingen can organize something

These manufacturers are getting so lazy and they're cutting corners with those hideous screens. They make the cars so soulless and they're also harder to use with certain features (A/C controls, presets, etc. Just so disappointing.
reply

What i hate about this tech garbage is that once you have this car for like 10 years everything is going to break and cause you a lot of headache! Meanwhile i am driving my 15 year old merc and everythings just fine
reply

Over complicated just for the sake of it. I'm rapidly going off new vehicles as you're paying for a load of crap you will never use and don't get me started on the fake exhaust trend. That alone would put me off.
reply

11: 18 I don t know about Android, but you can set the car key to Express Mode, meaning even when the phone is dead, you can unlock the car by bringing your phone close to the door handle.
reply

Unless you get an S class most, if not all, Mercedes interiors have too many cheap nasty bits. This is one thing BMW piss all over them for. Audi also do the cheap nasty bits too often.
reply

There is so much electronic Gremlins for the first year car and I would wait a few years. Or just lease it and do loaner for the next 2 to 3 years. you get to drive the new c lines.
reply

White shoe's, trousers AND white socks, really? The only thing missing is a bamboo tropical hat, you British still like Neo-colonial fashion don't you? Or is it just Yuppie'ism?
reply

What has happened to Mercedes to much tech + the head rests look cheap, new c63s has 4 cylinder. I m a Mercedes man but the new models c, e, and s are really disappointing
