Dodge Caravan: Leaking Exhaust Flange (Rusted Out Bolts) Cheezy: Considering the lack of rust I think it's 409 stainless. It's magnetic, isn't shiny like 304, but it takes heat pretty well and resists corrosion. My Nissan has 409 exhaust tubing but in their infinite wisdom, they used plain steel flanges and fasteners. The flange at the back by the muffler rotted out a couple years ago so I replaced it with a coupling and U clamps, but I spent a better part of New Year's weekend under my car fixing what I thought was a blown out doughnut gasket, turns out the flange rotted out and broke free from the pipe.

I hate exhaust work with a passion. Manifolds especially. My boss put a lift in, I'm a mechanical designer that has worked on cars for 40 years. I've worked on some real problem children for him. Trying to do exhaust work on a W12 VW phaeton. The dealer shows engine removal, I have to figure it out without that. I did replace the water cooled alternator by making a tool. VW would had to pull the engine for that as well. Wish me luck. I just want to design power plant equipment like I'm paid to do. Worked for this company 31 years now.

I'm DIY. and I have a Victor Journeyman torch and own my own bottles. Why rent when you only use them once a year? Came in handy last weekend for the front disc brakes on my Hondoo Odyssey. those rotor screws want to stick tight. broke several impact Philips bits. The old blue wrench works wonders. Did have to Dremel a slot in one of the screws, the broken Philips bit piece stuck in there, never seen that before.

Ah, the Trash-n-Crash. Nice to see one not all rotted out, most of them here in Metro Detroit are rusty and crusty. Usually see the front edge of the hood rusted out. As for what a diy'er could use, a mapp gas torch works pretty well, takes longer than the oxy acel torch, but gets the job done. Btw, those nuts are spot welded on there so that the folks on the assembly line can zip the exhaust together quickly.

For people looking to solve this problem at home but with limited means available, I recommend Clamp-A-Stud. Basically a c-clamp to pull the flanges together from the side. I had this problem years ago with my daily driver pick-up truck and the Clamp-A-Stud fixed it in 10 minutes for 40. The repair lasted for as long as I owned the truck.

Blue wrench spoken here. Depending on what you drive, ramps or jack stands can get you high enough to access most exhaust parts.
I ve used a die grinder to remove the ruminates of the spot welded nuts. As much as I hate Harbor Freight, they sell pneumatic right angle die grinders for 25 on sale.

As Mortske would say, Easy Peasy, Lemon Squeezy, though in this case as noted, the bolts were a tad recalcitrant. The bottom of that town and country didn't look too bad from what I saw, but definitely has the bubble cancer in sports, especially the left front dogleg however in the body.

Worked at a muffler shop back in the 80's. Still have scars from hot metal going down my shirt. Happened 3 or 4 times. As far as a DIY project, I would have cut off the bolt remnants then drill out the the stuff in the nuts. I would leave the old nuts and install new nuts on top of them.

Been taking a few old school square nuts off my restoration project. Like you said, a dremel tool you can cut it 4 times and twist each spot weld loose. Not optimal unless that's the only way. If I had a torch I would have 6 holes to choose from when I bolted it back together.

Saved a buddy a lot of money last week. Your recent video about the Chrysler engines and bad oil cooler/filter housings was spot on. His daughter's car was leaking oil on top of engine and in valley. The engine was smoking so bad that it looked on fire. Got it sorted out. Thanks!

Please do a video on changing out that pipe that goes from the Y up and over to the front resonator, the one that has the flex in it. Our flex is coming apart and I need to replace this section. Love all your videos Eric, I ve learned a ton and you ve made me a better mechanic!

I ve got the worst luck with stuff landing on your lip, I was using one of those big wire wheel attachments for the grander and one of the pokers come off and buried itself a couple inches into my lip. Didn t feel it till I licked my lips and oh boy let me tell you no fun

So, I went to a local auto shop. I asked the guy working that day if he could cut my nuts off for me. He gave me strangest look?
Thanks for the video. Always a great show when you get the torch out. Funny, that's what my X-wife used to say to me too. Loved the cup too.

Had her fixed before the first pot of coffee was done. Next.
(from my Mrs) I think your working Mrs. O. too hard. She doesn't get out to chat much anymore.
Remember if you can do it it's because she made you do it.

Morning videos feature a more chipper Eric O. I can empathize. That being said, I really respect the videos you make later in the day when it's clear you just want to go home but you stick around and get the damn job done.
