Customer States: I Think I Need Brakes?

Customer States: I Think I Need Brakes? chessie: I used to get customers that would come in and say the car is grinding. I'd ask how long it's been grinding. Usually they say a day or two. upon taking the tire off, the brake pad is gone and the rotor is worn down through the fins and half the piston is eaten away. Early lesson learned, customers sugarcoat it figuring it will make it better. At that point, I have to sell them pads, caliper(s, rotors and new hardware. If they catch it when the wear tabs start making noise it would save them soooo much money. I kinda miss doing this work for customers, but now I work on locomotives, fortunately, they font have rotors and calipers

What tool is being used to swallow those lugs? It appears to aggressively clean the rust from the hub face. Too bad a similar tool doesn t exist that could clean the lug threads, sort of like a narrow deep-well battery terminal cleaner. I never thought of coating the hubs with Fluid Film, I usually coat them with anti-seize. To avoid any issues with dissimilar lubricants, I always remove those rubber pin seals and thoroughly clean the bores before reassembling with Sil-Glyde but recently switched to silicone ceramic extreme 80653 to see if the latest and greatest is really any better. I used it on the back of the pads as well, not to mention a very light coating on the SS hardware and pad ears. Nice job with the abrasive blasting the bracket hardware lands. I use a bench mounted wire wheel but now I m considering looking for a blast cabinet. And while I too install the inboard pad wear indicator on the trailing edge, many people prefer the leading edge. I hope those rotors received a final cleaning.

The pads are crappy quality. Oh boy. That's an understatement. I spent 20 minutes cleaning up the bracket and finally compared the pads to check the size and sure enough the new ones, the ears were way too big! Quick grind job and a lick of paint on the ear and they fit all so smooth. So yes, those pads were bad quality, but they came straight from NAPA. Shame because I didn't buy the economy line pads either. Sometimes you just have to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

I spent time working on one car from New York she was an oldie probably from the mid to late 90s think it was a Ford Taurus I know it was a Ford this girl had Remax real estate signs for floorboards. sheet-metal for sale signs from someone s front yard had been pop riveted in place of the rusted out floor boards. She was a rusty old gal It was my neighbors car that he bought it an auction here in North West Georgia area.

On any vehicle around these parts. We have to be 100% sure the slide pins move in the caliper bracket. For some reason the lower ones likes to get water in them and rust up solid. You are forced to buy a rebuilt/new calipers here to get a new bracket with float pins. We have companies here who go to Metal to Metal failure and sometimes even caliper complete failure on these same trucks.

I've got to do a brake job on my 2000 Camry LE. I would like to change the back brakes from drums to disc. My brakes stick or they're grabbing for some reason. Sometimes when I brake one of the brake makes a whistling noise. Don't know what that is. Sometimes it makes this noise when I make a left turn. I need to find out what's making the noise.

That was easy! I did my GMC 3500 dually this past summer, the right rear parking brake wouldn t let the rotor come off, I had to plasma cut a hole in the rotor to get her off, really don t know why they are called emergency brakes doing 60 those little puppies aren t stopping a 3500, Always feels good having new brakes all around.

Just did the brakes on my 2011 Suburban. Had it in NY, but we live in SC now. I changed the rear pads 2 years ago. They were so hard to get in, that 2 years later the pads had about 20% ware. Meaning 80% of the pad was left. I didn't have the fancy caliper file, so I just replaced the bracket and hardware. The calipers were just fine.

Word of caution if you are going to paint the caliper brackets make sure not to build too much paint up or you ll have the same fitment problem as if you had rust. I just replaced front calipers that came with the brackets and thr paint they used was so thick the back of the bracket was rubbing against the back of the rotor.

I had never heard the term. :rust jacking. learned something new today. I guess how smart a person is depends upon the area in which they live, the conditions they face and their experiences. it is good that we can all learn something from each other is we are willing to listen.

Don't know why this is a pet peeve of mine but thanks for using the age-old and completely understood torque units of foot-pounds! Somehow this has needlessly and meaninglessly morphed to pounds-feet in a lot of circles. obviously means the same thing, but why change it FFS!

On grinding pads, I've always agreed with you about it but Kia doesn't seem to provide parts makers with correct sizes or however that works I've never run across a Kia in wisconsin for brakes that didn't need something abrasion fitted.

Nice job. Thanks for all the diagnostic videos, helping me with all the snowblowers and wiring issues with lights, heated handlebars etc. Traced a short yesterday on a buddy s snowblower last night, thought, I d better thank Eric, lol.

As I watch this we're getting our first real snow in Vermont. The plow trucks are out there just POURING the salt on the roads. Makes me fear for the steel on the underside of my vehicles. Oh well, only 6 more months of this.

just asking, do you ever bleed the brakes on jobs like this where the calipers are ok? just to get any moisture out so the calipers and lines and valving don't rust up as bad? brake fluid will absorb water pretty quickly.
