Exhaust Repair On The Cheap ToughAncientSpark: Welding and A/C recharging was the only things that I didn't do when I had my RV and mobile home repair business.
I had a buddy who was in the welding business to do the very infrequent welding or metal cutting jobs that I came across and here in The Great Industrial Northeast, A/C while camping in the Adirondacks for the four days per season that you might actually need it was never an issue.
So, you won't hear any complaints from me!

I went to a shop last week and about had a stroke after I found out what the shop foreman did! Yes the head shit catcher did this to my truck. He puts on a new exhaust for me and he ran out of exhaust hangers and instead of calling me about the problem he gets impatient and welds the exhaust to the frame of my truck! and makes it work, so he tells me this and of course I asked him what he was smoking and also told him that in order to change my transmission fluid the exhaust has to be dropped and he just stood there and then says oh boy I didn't think about that. So I leave mad as hell and wait until I calm down and spoke to the owner the next day, all hell broke lose.

All hail the duct tape fixing a welder supplies!
Six years ago, a welded-on horizontal hanger was completely rusted through on my 2006 Cavalier. The difficult part was grinding away the remaining lumps of metal on the exhaust pipe without grinding through it. Then, I bent up a section of rebar and welded two exhaust pipe clamps to each side of the fabricated rebar rod. The exhaust and fabricobbled hanger are still in place today!

From a self taught half welder, you are an excellent welder A) and B) customer service, in the fact that you repaired it and saved her money. Ain t many like you left anymore! Every video you impress me with the fact you are looking out for the customer to save them money. Nearly 50 years ago I went with a friend to visit members of his family in Hornell NY, I believe not to far southwest of you. Pretty country up there

The only thing I might have done differently would be to try to weld the inside of the sleeve on the muffler side before the easier part since it's such a pain to get up over the top. Oh also as a tip: if you spray the rubber of the muffler hangar with brake parts cleaner it makes the rubber slimy so the hangar slips right out or in. When the spray dries the rubber goes right back to being a a tight firm fit. .02

I must have 1000 ideas how to repair exhaust, on this one after cutting away the flange the cp should have been welded oo the muffler first, then complete remove of rear muffler, easier to weld the re- install muffler weld connection, add a j-hook 20 minutes, btw I would have use a flange kit 15 minutes loll doing mufflers since 78, I do enjoy your Videos

Could you have taken out the muffler an welded the sleeve on then insert into the other pipe where your have room to weld. Great job on your diagnostic skills in fixing engine problems which comes from years of experience and a true understanding how each electronic component relate to each other. Keep up the great work and stay warm.

At first when I started to see you welding without shade protection over your eyes I thought I was going to have to tell you Wait till your father gets home But you got the shade on a little later and I m proud to say don t have to call Mom. Nice repair!

Yeah I worked at a muffler shop but we were a little bit more lenient if the rest of the exhaust was really really good shape like this was not that bad we put a section in for him. But it's not common for them to say we're not going to play with your rusty stuff because there's no money in it! All the best from Canada

Just as an fyi. In an exhaust shop all they do is they tackle the top sleeve section remove the muffler weld it all the way around the top so then put them up for back on and just weld the bottom makes it a little easier to do you don't have to kill yourself welding the top section on and then just put your hanger on.

I do ALL my own welding, and while I have 30+ years experience in precision sheet metal fabrication, I use a cheap but capable flux core (yes, the weld looks gnarly) welder and it's powered by a 4K generator. Your welds do the job and that's all that really matters. Great work, Eric!

Isn t that a flexible part of the exhaust? I have put solid pieces in where flanges were and the pipe cracked. If you put a flange instead you can weld them from the inside of the pipe then put the flanges together. Won t it crack if it s not flexible there?

I'm concerned that you are going to destroy your eyes looking at the weld without a shield. As they say: Welding without adequate eye protection may cause photokeratitis, conjunctivitis, cataracts, skin cancer, burns to retina and burns to dermis. Just sayin.

Fun fact. well fun to me because I'm a dork that center hanger at the flange is there so the center pipe hangs on it's own if ever disconnected from the muffler. Anyway, excellent job keeping these older whips going at reasonable prices for people Mr Eric O!

What a great guy you are, taking time to determine whether or not a money-savings quick fix is all that is needed. Wanting to save this older woman some significant money was your priority. This is a rarity in today's repair shops. I tip my hat to you!
