I have fun trying to fix electronic devices and very often it's a problem with the lead free solder.

With the increased use of lead-free solder, there has been speculation over the phenomenon of tin whiskers which are small, hair like conductive filaments that grow from metals like tin and silver, among others. These can pose damaging threats to electronics as the filaments can form a bridge between components and cause electrical failure (Sampson et al, 2009. The possibility of tin whiskers is less likely to occur using leaded solder, however, this is dependent on the amount of lead in the solder.

Awesome video! Thank u! I actually have an 03 silverado thats doing the same thing right now. Guessing this may be it. Also thought i would share that years ago i actually had mine replaced by a manufacturer recall notice. This is probably why! But also i noticed on my negative battery cables (grounds) the small one had come loose. I have no idea how this happened or how long its been like this. I know the bigger cable goes to the engine block. Can anyone tell me where does this small one mount to? Ive been told anywhere on the chassis will do. But id like to know exactly where this goes. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Steve congratulations on that Chevy intermittent clusterI have very good Steve I have a Buick LeSabre 92 have the same problem that goes if the battery dies like overnight or so if I didn't you know drive it for about a week the battery it holds the charge but I if I leave it for a week or so and I'm driven in a battery goes down I seem to have that same intermittent problem thanks for the video take care be safe out there

Thanks for the time and video. My GF's 2010 Treverse's new battery is going dead after a few days. I found a. 161 amp draw and have not traced it down yet. However, while driving it, I noticed that the alt voltage, starts at 14. 3 but within 45 sec it starts dropping to what the battery voltage shows when I start it, 12. 4. I'm not much of a mechanic, but this seems like alt/voltage reg issues. Would you be so kind as to comment?

My 03 is dying overnight as well. If I charge it she will run and once in a blue moon she will start the next day. Well I had the key turned over just to test my check engine light and bam she died within 2 minutes. During my week of dealing with this at one point my rpm mode was at zero with the truck running. Battery and alt are about 6 months old. I am driving myself insane figuring this out

Good on you for calling them up. True troubleshooter! Thank you for that! It would take a month of Sundays to find that silver migration info! The tech was great too. Not one ounce of apprehension or assumption you were calling because it wasn't fixed correctly or holding back any answers you asked. Fantastic videos. I hope more follow your lead.

I have a 1999 Suburban and I wil bet you my draw is fro the same issue. I will find out in the AM. my shop wanted 85. an hour and he said it could take half a day to even find a short to ground. I had no Idea where to begin but I can do all you did. If I can wire and trouble TV Studio Gear, I can trace this short down with your Help. Thank you!

SIlver Migration in the no lead solder. Good luck selling that to a customer. Your instrument cluster fell victim to the effects of the infamous Silver Migration which usually coincides with the monsoons of late summer Great stuff as usual Eric. I would probably hit the BS button if I had not seen the video.

Yea see its silver migration. None lead solder. I figured it'd be CPU but yea, gotta reflow the motherboard in a way. But you could probably use vinager. Take the cluster apart. Clean it up a bit. But hey awesome job just chattin with the guy. That takes time and much appreciated.

Thanks I own a 2003 GMC and this is the second time around with this problem the first time it was still under warranty so I was not told in detail what was wrong only that I had a wiring problem that needed repairing. Now I know what need to be done. A great video!
