What kind of fast grand touring cars will the future of the automobile bring us - and what will they be like? The 751bhp Porsche Taycan Turbo S, priced at -139, 000 ($187, 470 in the US) which has a top speed of 162mph and can get from 0-62mph in just 2. 8 seconds, gives us a taste of all-electric answers to that question. Meanwhile the 592bhp Polestar 1 (top speed 155mph, 0-60mph in 4. 2sec) suggests a plug-in hybrid take, priced at -135, 500 (or $165, 500 if you're in the USA. Is either better than a V8-engined Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4dr for a long blast across continent? This 4. 0-litre twin-turbocharged internally-combusted car can go from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 3. 8sec and has a mega top speed of some 193mph - because, y'know, engines. I take issue with all of this -it's a real driver's car-. Well, yes it is if we continually change the definition of a driver's car.
I don't think it's controversial to say that anything with synthetic, elastic, feeling-less steering, anything that weighs over say 1. 5 tonnes (ideally sub 1300, anything without a manual gear change or an emotive engine sound is or can ever be a real driver's car.
It's a shame to see this being eroded with every new car release. Automotive journalists I'm afraid to say lose integrity with every instance they fail to raise this issue. Just regurgitating a press release with no critical thought is not journalism, especially when speaking to driving enthusiasts.
So here we are. A 'drivers car' now essentially means: fast, extreme traction/ grip. We're in luck then with electric cars, because everything from a leaf to a taycan ticks these boxes.

I disagree with the argument that cars have to go electric going forward. I live in America. where we are supposedly free to do anything we want. We should be free to choose a gas engine if we like. The polestar looks so good but probably would have been better and lighter with a proper 650 horse gas motor. This would also cure the problem of lost space due to excessive battery size. Better back seats and more trunk space. all good things.

That's pretty funny. If the Polestar costed around 20-30k, sure it could be meant for those who don't take things too seriously. I doubt it costs anywhere near that price range. Up in the 6 figure pricing, by definition, the customers are people who take things seriously, so Polestar will have a target market of about 2 people. yeah on earth.

This Merc looks a bit weird at the back. Reminds me of my Porsche Panamera 970 turbo which all of you auto writers vilified. My Porsche has a 115 ltr tank vs Merc-s 80 ltr. It-s only a fraction slower than the Merc and is ten years older, plus can have factory warranty if you pay for 15 years. Porsche there is no substitute!

Does Volkswagen (Porsche) pay y'all to say this ridiculous nonsense or something? Total B. S. I read and watch a lot of reviews, that compare Porsche to others, funny how most of these glittery reviews have come after Volkswagen took over Porsche (2012, hummmm. Prior to that BMW got lots of accolades, hmmmm.

Acoustics-wise, the Taycan Turbo S makes the naturally aspirated, big-bore V8 accompaniment, for the age. I think we'll pontificate in decades to come how the Taycan was the first EV with notable, developed soundtrack. Although Elon would probably disagree _(for publicity alone, no doubt, whether valid or not. _

Cars like the tacan are the future, like it or not
Don-t think we are there yet though, we need gen 2 batteries with a higher charge density, this will answer two issues range and weight of which both compromise the experience
Head says Tacan Heart says AMG

The Taycan S is amazing, but your stats about the gt63s are wrong. The car does 0-60 mph in about 3. 2 seconds. Yes that four door is that fast. This car is truly special doing 0-60 faster than supercars that weigh much less.

Plug in hybrid is a cost-cutting low tech compromise. People with higher standards will prefer a pure electric vehicle but that level of technological sophistication seems beyond the capacity of european manyfacturers.

Porsche Taycan definitely can charge from 5% to 80% in 23 minutes. That's according to Porsche claim as well as real world test done by owner in Ionity charging network (biggest one in Europe)
