This is not a 4 cylinder car, it is a 320/6 with the single carb 2 liter M20 six. The 4 cylinder 320/320i were discontinued at the end of 1977 model year. I think she is referring to the heavyness of the controls, no power steering, little power assistance for the brakes and the clutch. Cars these days are very heavy, but they have light controls. Power steering came in with the e21 323i, I don't recall seeing it on lower models. Might have been optional though. This e21 was developed during the fuel crisis of 1973/74 when the price of oil quadrupled overnight thanks to OPEC, remember them? There weren't many diesels around at the time, and they were really slow (0-60 mph over 25 seconds. The first good affordable diesel, was the VW Golf which came out a little later. BMW didn't do diesel until 1983, it just didn't fit in with their image. Early 3 and 5 series cars rode soft because BMW were pushing their new cars upscale, against Mercedes and Jaguar. Later e21s after 1980 rode much firmer.

That passed relatively fast, and was nowhere near as serious as it was in the States (where they had a several times higher average fuel consumption per inhabitant and thus needed way stricter rationing. Also, by the time it had passed gas prices didn't climb like a rocket.
Despite the heavy taxation of oil in Europe, prices in 1975 were low compared to other commodities. Indeed fuel economy wasn't an issue to Europeans that didn't drive huge trucks the size of the Titanic (Ford F-series.

Kind of a weird dream ride, but my absolute most desired car is a 1979 BMW 330 e21. With the touring kit used for racing, it looks incredibly mean/transformerish-
The N/A w/ ITB 2. 0l i6 used in the race version turned at up to 10, 200rpm, and put down a hair over 400HP and around 290lb-ft. -
There's just something about kicking the clutch to get the wheels spinning to enter the motors powerband. Combine this with how well the chassis is balanced and it's hard not to smile around a corner. LOVE

-HEAVY-?
I have always defended this woman but not now.
I am not talking about the actual weight (which is a few HUNDRED kilos lighter, I mean how the car FEELS. If your senses tell you the F30 feels lighter and they cannot sense mechanical dynamics and discern suspension setup (admittedly very fluffy on the stock 320 E21) or steering ratio (again, vague and with long ratio, then your senses are not very refined at present.
Or is it simply you identify more with the spirit of new cars?

No, the new 3 series doesn't do -everything you want-, it costs way too much to maintain. Older cars are more simple and much easier to maintain. Money buys happiness, we know that, but why do you need to spend so much for transportation? New BMW's will thin out your wallet very quickly.

Really like that E21 but still love the pre-facelift E46 320d that made me fall in love with stylish, attractive BMWs.
The F30 is certainly a mark up from it's predecessor and that red is a lovely hue.

Sorry, the 320 E21, used to have a 6 cylinder engine, and 0-100km was in 10sec. I remember these cars when I was a teenager. We used to call them shark face. The 323i was the top model!
reply

I'll take the old one just because older cars have a charm that not many new cars have; older cars have that sense of really being connected to the drive

Hahahaha a BMW 320 Diesel desirable, really? I must have been missing something but IIRC the 3 series is no hand-built supercar.

Great review. Didn't like the look of the new BMW but now it's really growing on me. Looking forward to more reviews just like this.
