Driving in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains on Carson Pass 4K

AED, you will notice that as your vehicle pulls even with Iron Mountain/Mormon Emigrant Road, you're on a short stretch of ridgeline that gives a glimpse of the staggering devastation caused by the colossal Caldor Fire. There were MANY areas where the conflagration was COMPLETE--no standing snags; lots of wind-throw; and, some wind-throw in circular patterns, suggesting fire tornadoes. There were profuse spot-fires in your run-up to Silver Lake, though not much signs of a main fire-front, yet. That was in your run-up to Carson Spur, where the front did indeed cross the highway, and, through the Spur, the fire did also come right to the highway's verge. Kirkwood is one of my fave ski spots, and I'm glad to see that the front, nor its spots, did any damage there, even if the fire may have been less than a half mile away from that turnoff. Going past Caples, you can see how the fire possibly burned RIGHT UP to timberline, which SELDOM happens with any fire of consequence. In Hope Valley, there were many, many small spots that were successfully extinguished, thanks to fire crews staging a far-advance stand. Those LIVE wind propelled embers that caused those, had to have flown ten or so miles, before they ignited the ground in Hope! Indeed, through the U. S. -50's traverse over Echo Pass, this constituted an extremely RARE breach of the Sierran Crest, by a wildfire, as the hurricane-force blowtorch shot embers across the 89, to the East side of Christmas Valley, well below and away from the Pass, on that highway's run-up to Luther Pass. And quite of those spots fairly exploded, making a run towards Nevada. For much of this fire's history, the 50 was closed between Placerville and Carson City. The Same for both California's & Nevada's 88's, between Jackson and Gardnerville. 395 closed between Walker and Minden. Finally, the 89, from its Southern Terminus, at the 395 (Monitor Pass, to Tahoe City, leaving the small town of Markleeville "marooned", just one stage below Immediate Mandatory Evac Orders. The status was the much the same, for Tahoe West shore Burgs. And the Big Lake wore a sickening scum of ashes on its surface, for about 2 weeks.

hi again, another stunning video, one thing I like about your videos is, you put up the road names and places so if anyone is planning a trip in that state, if the saw your videos they can quickly plan a drive down that same road, it really is very helpful apart from the fact that they are just amazing drives, but watching the landscapes you still have to wonder just how hard it was for people back in 1800s to get to places, looking forward to watching the rest, Happy Aussie.

Oh yes one of my "roads less traveled". I only have ever been that way twice: once as a child with my parents, and once with my husband when I was introducing him to the wonders of backcountry Sierra.
