sure it is a nice plane, but the interior is a very outdated product with the seats over a decade old. i've flown on that plane dozens of times over the past decade, mostly between Frankfurt and Mexico City, and most of those times on the upper deck.
the service is usually fine. the cabin underwhelming, the food is usually nothing special, on occasion fine when departing Germany. When departing Mexico it is horrible most of the time. and depending on the time of the year it is the same menu over and over. when i flew in may/june out of germany it was usually the veal fillet with asparagus. when departing mexico usually the vegetarian filled pasta as that was the only edible main course. i would usually avoid beef on LH.
I fly Lufthansa as it is the most direct way for me to fly either out of frankfurt, Munich or Innsbruck for me. I would MUCH prefer if either Austrian would fly to Mexico or Aeromexico started flights to Germany. i flew Aeromexico once via amsterdam as LH was full, and it was MUCH better. Food, IFE, internet, drinks menu, the seat and even the punctuality were far better than Lufthansa out of Mexico.
LH have a long way to go and the whole allegris delays have been a disaster for them. plus with up to 7 different types of seats in business class with allegris, it is just a nightmare. there should be just window and aisle and that is that. a consistent product. not a bunch of different seat manufacturers in the same cabin. someone will always be disappointed with their assigned seat.
yes i agree the 747 is a wonderful plane. but with the current outdated hard product and usually underwhelming catering, Lufthansa have a long way to go.
either way i will fly with them again in less than 2 months to Mexico city, probably on the upper deck again. not because the airline is so brilliant, but because they have the most convenient route network for me, where i do not need to transit in USA, Canada, London or Paris.

My first flight was in Dec 1996 to London. I was in 3rd grade and traveled with family from Chicago on British Airways. On the way to London, we flew on a 747-200. It was an old bird, and looked its age. The flight attendants had a crew rest in the very last row of the plane next to us. It had a curtain they could close for privacy. My dad chatted with the stewardess during the flight. She said that plane was about to be retired and they didn’t like flying on them because the 747-400 and new 777s were so much nicer. Towards the end of the flight, she came back and asked if my brother and I wanted to pop up. We got to go up on the upper deck which was so cool for a 3rd grader heck, it would be cool for me today. We spent two weeks in London and when we flew home we flew on a 777. I then understood what the flight attendant meant about not liking flying on the 747-200’s anymore. In seat entertainment at every seat, quieter, and BA had the world tails at the time and so that was fun when plane spotting at Heathrow before boarding. I’ll always think fondly of that trip!

My sister flew on the 747-400 Luthansa to South Korea in 2023, however earlier this they were flying 747-8 instead and recently those flights have been replaced with A350-900s, I do hope those B-400s and 800s are being refurbished. I noticed the change as I like tracking flights on Flight Aware, especially routes I been on. The only flight for me on a 747 was with Air Canada in Dec 1997, when I was 15. Felt like a building in the sky, it's still an incredible sight with it heft and size. I would like to treat myself on 747-800 and A380 someday before they disappear.

I have yet to experience the majesty that is, well, her majesty the 747 and I know that I may never get the opportunity, but I will forever sing her praises. The aircraft that revolutionized the aviation industry and started the dream of so many in this industry past, present, and future. As she continues her slow and unfortunate departure from pax service, the industry will forever remember The Queen of the Skies through photos, videos, and the countless pieces of aviation memorabilia that will keep her legacy on this earth indefinitely.

That question is hard to answer! Both are incredibly iconic and outstanding airplanes. While the A380 is more quiet, just impressively huge and hence more comfy to travel on, the 747 is just one of the best looking planes and an eternal legend. Especially the 747-8 looks amazing, even though it's pretty loud. I've flown both just once, but I will get the chance to fly 1A and on the upper deck in a 747-400 this summer. I'm sooooo thrilled and excited for this old queen!

Hey Jeb! Not sure if you’ll read this, but here’s a tip if you’re having trouble with connecting to inflight wifi: If you have a VPN app installed on your phone, you’ll have to turn it off not just on your app, but on your phone settings as well. Be sure to look up VPN setting and turn off automatically connect to VPN. Once you’re off the plane and you connect to public wifi, you’ll have to turn everything on again.

I've gone on Lufthansa a few times, and never have had a good experience. I still enjoyed it, but not thanks to them. Glad you enjoyed the 747s though! I don't think I've ever seen a video of yours giving a business class seat a 2/5 before!
You should use Air India to connect to Singapore or somewhere else, I'd be interested in seeing what their offerings look like, and if they are improving since they were privatized.

Team 747.
The 747 was built for its time. It filled a need, and 1500 were built over 55 years.
When the 380 was planned and. built, there was not much of market remaining. Only 250 were built over 18 years.
Interesting that the 747 was initially seen as an interim design (until supersonic flight started. This was the reason for the upper deck, so that conversion into freighters would be simplified.

A380 of course! The 747 is outdated, noisy, cramped and uncomfortable. The A380 is so much quieter, much more comfortable and you can directly board the upper deck, no stairs and no interference with Economy passengers. Pilots on the A380 have a proper cockpit without old yokes and with large LCD screens, even the cabin crew has more comfort with electric doors, still a unique A380 feature.
reply

Yes, the A380 is an engineering marvel, but the 747 is an aviation ICON. Without the 747, the A380 might not have ever been imagined. Being an Air Force brat, I put the 747 and the C-5 in the same category. There are newer planes C17, 787, A350 and bigger planes A380, Antonov 225, 124, etc, but the 2 originators are still flying to this day. That's gotta count for something.

I flew a few times on the upper deck back in the day. Some people might find the upper deck a bit claustrophobic compared to the First Class on the lower level (mainly because of the 'hump' design, especially in terms of storage. Nevertheless, it is hard to beat the quietness of the upper deck. BTW, nuts in the bag I'll prefer the warm nuts on United.

i've had that veal tenderloin with the asparagus twice on flights out of frankfurt. it is usually dry and overcooked. if they have some sort of pasta on the menu, that is the safest option on Lufhtansa.
they should really switch their catering to do&co, like Austrian have. the food on austrian business class is so good for a plane. the best i've had.

As someone who loves aviation and flying, it's hard to choose between the two classicsthe B747 and the A380. Given a choice, I would fly in either of them over the other planes. Seeing how the 747 is becoming rare, I would choose the 747 for my next flight, but if I had to fly regularly, I would most definitely choose the A380 for its comfort.

Back in 2003 I went to South Africa. Flew South African Airways and back then on their 747s the upper deck was regular seats! Not first or business class. The only way you could get a seat up there was if you knew to ask for it. There were about 30 seats up there and only about 15 people. We all empty middle seats. It was a fantastic trip!

Hey Jeb and Suzanne. the 747, obviously, has not lost its allure. I flew a Delta 747 to Chicago as my first jumbo experience way back in 1973. I was mesmerized by the grand airliner, and went on to fly several more trips with the Queen. So glad you and Suzanne got to experience the awesome plane! Keep up the good work!
reply

My first and only experience on the 747 was on Lufthansa two years ago. Sat upstairs on both flights and totally agree that it feels like ur own private plane. The views are great, the staff was very friendly and food was good. Definitely the seats are showing their age. But loved the whole thing.
reply

Really love your travel adventures! Liked following you before Susanne, and now it’s double the fun! I should really look into catching a flight on these 787-8s. While there may be a second wind for the A380s, I feel the last leg of these legends may be upon us. Thanks again for taking us along!
reply

Yup, the comment about not being able to differentiate the Dreamliner and the A350 was SPECIFICALLY to annoy AvGeeks
More seriously though haha, this video was amazing! I MUCH prefer the 747's specifically because I find the A380 windows too small, and too far from the inner cabin wall

reply

Team 747.
I've been on the A380 once. The toilets at the back were spacious, but the view out of the windows was narrow due to the extremely thick walls.
747s, I've flown since I was too young to remember, right through to my honeymoon in 2006. I don't think I've been on one since.

reply

It has been 30 years 1988 and 91 respectively since I was able to fly on the 747. Once to Japan and back on the FLYING TIGERS, and the 2nd time was to Saudi on Continental and honestly cant remember who on the way back, was USMC and deployed for Desert Storm.
