Question regarding shopping: the last time I was in Germany, in this case Heidelberg, though I went a lot of places, I saw some knives I liked. I am going back in the spring, and thought about buying 6-10 all of the same knife for guys who help get me to and from the airport stateside, etc. I know I would have to ship them back, no problem there. My question is- is negotiation accepted in Germany, notably on a quantity purchase like I am speaking of?

Well. I don't doubt that as a German teacher, Mr. Antrim would sure be better equipped to eplain German Grammar, but in terms of pronunciation you are lightyears ahead of him. Judging from this video, your pronunciation is pretty much as perfect as it can get and it's hard to tell you're not a native speaker, but as for Mr. Antrim it was instantly recognizable that English was his first language.

Hey: ) I'm from germany and i would like to correct you a little bit.
Darf ich das kaufen? sounds a little bit weird to germans. It's like: Do i have the permission to.
The better way would be Kann ich das kaufen. It's more like: is it able to buy?

reply

Nobody would ever say Darf ich das kaufen because that means Am I allowed to buy this. And you are of course allowed to buy things in a shop: ) So, you would ask here Kann ich das kaufen = Can I buy this.
reply

Just a tip if you need directions or whatever: If you find a German that is in his or her twenties or thirties you have a good chance they speak perfect English.

Dude your pronunciation is nearly perfect! Awesome! Im not sure if i would know you're not a native if I only would hear you. keep going!

Could i buy this? is not Darf ich das kaufen, it is Kann ich das kaufen?
Darf ich das kaufen? means Is it allowed to buy this?
