If you wanted to know all about Jake Gyllenhaal’s workout for his new movie Road House, then you’ve come to the right place. In this video, I am going to break down what Jake’s workout looks like and what he did in pursuit of the body that he achieved for this movie. Just like I’ve done for every celebrity workout critique that I have done in the past, I am going to be respectful and provide an unbiased review of Jake Gyllenhaal’s workout for Road House. Not only that, I am going to break down what parts of the workout you can add to your own as well as what might be unnecessary for your training. To preface this video, I don’t have access to Jake’s entire workout program that he used to prepare his body for this movie, but we do have a snippet thanks to a recent video from Men’s Health. In that video, you get an example of the type of training that Jake Gyllenhaal did, but because it’s simply a small sample size of what he did, I can’t necessarily say that his programming was entirely good or bad. Without the important information, saying one way or the other would be an unfair critique and that’s what I want to avoid when doing these celebrity workout reviews. That said, to start off, Jake does some flexibility work with poles. Now before you think that there is something special or even gimmicky about the poles, that is not the case. These help you to perform assisted stretches. In very much the same way that a squat rack could help you increase a pec minor stretch or a bench can improve a thoracic mobility drill, these help push you beyond your passive limits. From here we see some work on the Proteus. This athletic training device is one that many pro athletes and sports teams use. It provides three dimensional resistance, particularly for rotation dominant athletes. Here, with Jake preparing to be a fighter in Road House, he wanted to move and perform like one. Given the dual benefit of conditioning to help him get cut and lose weight for the movie as well as train his core, this seemed like a good choice. If you don’t have access to this you can perform a landmine twist exercise, as shown in the video. Next we see some isometric work. While I think traditional isometrics performed as resistive holds are good and can increase strength within a limited range of motion from where the isometric is performed, I think there are even better benefits that come from performing overcoming isos. There are a few examples shown in the video to help you get the concept and learn how they improve type ii muscle fiber recruitment. Keeping with the theme of athletic training, up next is sled work. Here we get a good eccentric free exercise that can be done for both strength development in the legs as well as conditioning. Because of the lack of eccentric stress we can perform these multiple times per week without accruing muscle soreness. Now some would argue that there isn’t any traditional weight training being performed here. Well, that’s where the squat and bench press come in. Both exercises are here and have been progressively overloaded. The choices of a safety squat bar and swiss bar seem to be to accommodate a bad shoulder for Jake Gyllenhaal. Though different, I don’t believe they are a compromise and therefore have no problem with them. Continuing on we have chain pushups. This is actually not a gimmick exercise. The chains help to better match the resistance curve of the exercise to make it challenging throughout the entire range of motion. At the bottom of the rep the chains are piling up on the floor and unweighting. At the top, where we are strongest, the chains are lifted and more total weight is added to the system. We finish up with some cross body movement patterns, push/pull combos and some interval based cardio to end. I like the placement of the cardio at the end of the workout so as not to interfere with hypertrophy training as a rule, but here, where the pattern of the workouts is very conditioning based as it is it seems like more of a finisher than it does an avoidance of cardio early on. The push pull patterns are athletic and a great way to train the core.

I don't know about those weight figures, he looks no more than 175 in the movie. Conor is probably around 190 - 195 in the film and you can see the difference clearly. I also don't think it's unattainable, but from personal experience, after 32 it gets really hard to get into that kind of shape without some external help.
I've been exercising forever and I don't really drink alcohol anymore so that helps, but I've been taking cordyceps and ashwagandha as exercise supplements, they boost testosterone and V02 max and help with recovery and sleep. I'm in pretty good shape now, but I don't feel like I would have gotten here without these. Cold showers before a workout are amazing too, made a massive difference in my body's response to exercise. I feel 10 years younger.
If I can make another point, fight fans have gotten used to the way fighters looked with USADA. A very specific build that I assumed was functional strength orientated, so you don't see a lot of sixpacks. Strong cores, but not really shredded abs. When Jake shot that sequence for the UFC flashbacks, it was very apparent to me he was in great shape, but he didn't look like a fighter, specifically his abs seemed like someone that focusses on aesthetics, not function. The interesting point is however, since USADA left, most of the fighters have six packs again. It's very apparent at UFC299. The work rate is up as well.

Not bragging. but with little training, I was bigger than this guy and more ripped. I was considered a big version of Bruce Lee, although it was running and soccer I did most of all. Those around were body-builders mostly some on steroids. And yes, some asked me if I was on steroids. I think if someone is genetically blessed metabolically. then others assume you are on steroids, as most people need them to gain real size. and be ripped as well. No-one who I played soccer, or tennis with asked me if I was on steroids, so in the UK back then in the 80s. it was almost exclusively body-builders who were into steroids. and they assumed others were. Perhaps, in the US and now the UK it has crept into most sports. to enhance performance. sadly

Greetings fellow Jeff! I just wanted to reach out & say that I'm very grateful for you sharing your vast wealth of knowledge with us! I've recently achieved a lifelong goal of 200lbs 16% fat, up from 180 20%, using a healthy diet, zero supplements & diligence while training. It wouldn't have been so easy to achieve if it wasn't for your helpful videos! I've gained insight on how & where to correct my form, increase & add certain exercises, as well as learn about muscles I didn't even know I had! I also recently ordered some of your brand protein to try out & use to help me reach my daily protein intake! Cheers Jeff, here's to good health

And remember: He is an successful Hollywood actor, means a millionaire, his job is to look good, his normal life is like my holidays, no work in shifts, early shift means waking up at 4: 20am, night shift and so on and on top of this my hard work and 3 times a week hard training in the gym. What he does is not very special or hard, it is very easy. To motivate me after waking up at 4: 20 am and a hard shift to drive to the gym after that, very tired and out of energy, day by day, scince 30 years, that's really tough.

His physique in the movie was definitely attainable naturally. He doesn't have massive amounts of muscle, it only looks that way because his body fat % is super low in those shots. Not to mention he's probably dehydrated, he probably did prep similar to what bodybuilders do before show days.
One thing's for sure, he must've definitely felt like shit during the filming of those scenes! Respect for still delivering a good performance despite the lack of energy he must've been going through.

Great overview but quite surprised by the wrist work comment. I mean if you can afford to train daily or better yet multiple times a day, sure, knock yourself out with all those wrist curls, but for most of us hitting gym 3-4x per week i think it's a massive waste of time. Personally I get my forearms properly pumped during pull-ups, barbell rows, deadlifts, farmer's carry, toes to bar, hanging, etc.

He did that boxing movie southpaw(just watched a few days ago) was pretty toned. Given his build and structure, he seems to have good genetics plus money towards dieting and proper supplements. If you have a good trainer, and can mentally connect with your muscles, is key. I’ve been doing my exercises wrong most my life due to lifting more, vs, mentally activating muscle groups and correct form

Just watched the movie, if it wasn't for the absolutely garbage CGI special effects I just might consider this movie somewhat decent. it is a shame to get into that good of shape for a role in a movie of this quality but either way I know they're all laughing to the bank. Jeff always has great opinions I've learned a lot from him over the years

This is awesome. Since people have compared Dr. Mike to Jeff, i would like to point out that Jeff says each time, the exercise for what they need him to do. Dr. Mike just thinks about making the person look as thick and big as possible. Yeah, some events ask for you to look the part some other times you need to be able to move the part.

Just watched Roadhouse at work today (my office isn’t very busy. Wasn’t impressed. It was an okay watch and some good action scenes but a one time watch. Couldn’t believe they paid McGregor 5. 5 million for it. He wasn’t a bad villain but he’s no Jesse to Dalton (Jeff.
Going to go enter the contest now. Wish we luck all.

It's so funny how everyone has to bring up steroids. One because they want an excuse for others to get fit instead of them and two as if it even matters even if they were on steroids. ITS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! Nobody has you strapped to a table forcing a 1. 5 MG pin to your quad. So mind your own life/business.

Please do a video with Dr Mike, I really enjoy both your videos it would be great for you to have a sensible debate about exercises and the goals of the individual.
Athleticism vs Pure Size Gain vs Aesthetics
Challenge and debate without beef from two sensible professionals.

one thing i took away from the men's health video was the trainer saying this is not sustainable. people need to realize you can't look like this 24/7. it's the equivalent of working out full time for a year to look good for a 1 week vacation. just not possible for 99. 999%.

I think there should be a law that requires the actors to be tested for steroids or other prohibited substances. If they are on them, fine, but there should be a pre-roll disclaimer on their movies that must be shown in theaters that explicitly says which actors have used them.

Losers just looking for excuse, lack of immaturiy, lazy, dont eat right and dont know how to train. Jake is natural and this isnt for long periods just for shooting. And this training is for preforming as an actor as a fighter. He isnt even big, this is just lighting just ripped

Jake has always been one of my favourite actors. October Sky, Jarhead, End of Watch, and Brokeback Mountain were all great examples of his diversity. If the new Roadhouse movie sucks it won't be because of Jake's performance I can gaurantee that.

Can you cover soccer players like Haaland or Ronaldo Theres a recent clip of antony elanga doing cool speed drills but also messi's been in the gym now hes in florida. I'm less into bulking and more into staying lean and building muscle

I saw the movie this weekend. I didn't get the feeling that he wasn't natural. His abs seem a little overdeveloped for the rest of his physique, just my opinion. But abs are popular. The audience sees them and their brains fill in the gaps.

Can we get more content for mma athletes/martial artists I struggle to find a good plan or strategy to implement my gym training with my mma training. My goal is continue building lean muscle while remaining athletic and strong.
