I like the honesty as you guys are not pushing the biggest is best idea. 2600k is good enough to not bottleneck a large amount of graphics cards that can run most games on ultra.
I feel like we are currently in a plateau for components pricing. It's Tax season, sales are very minimal, and a lot of people are getting ready with x570. I think we've reached a bell curve of performance to cost efficiency, were you can get by with outdated components easily, and slight upgrades to get a base clock of 4ghz and 6+gb graphics really starts to multiple the cost exponentially.
So I am actually building a new optiplex and putting a i7 2600k in it, and the idea is I am paying $300 for it with 480gb ssd, 16gb ramm, rx 570, i7-2600k and deepcool 400. Won't be the BEST, but if I can sell all the intel based components in the optiplex 3010 that I got for $50 (with windows 10) for probably $150-200 and walk away with the graphics card and my 600watt psu. I'll then sell the 570 and move onto x570 in 2-3 years. It's said that r5 1600af-2600 have 2-3 years left in them, so why wouldnt the 2600k? Plus most modern games are not as interesting to me and I just want to play 7 days to die, blackwake and have the option to get into some slightly better games.
really liked the video! it assured me that going for a $300 intel build vs $550 ryzen is the proper choice for the foreseeable future, and will probably lose less money on the resell of the i7 overclocked optiplex than selling all the ryzen based items while everyone else will be selling theirs as new generations are released.

As a Boot and MPC fan, I'm surpised Gorden could call the 2600K a Honda civic (350k miles for sure though. Where's the love and respect; how about calling it a Lexus LC? Not a crazy supercar, but a performance and reliable machine that isn't out of the realm of affordability for and average guy (at least w/o kids: ).
The fact that I still have the 2600k as my primary computer, at least 5 years beyond my previous CPU upgrade cycle of 3 years, is one marker of what a good part it was, and also how the CPUs have fallen under Moores' law. At least at the end of my usual upgrade cycle, I saw the writtng on the wall, and upgraded to a high end ROC MB (I had also experienced a trio of monitors with dying caps, and was worried about the MB's future). Anyway, good advice though. I'll probably pull the trigger in late 2021 on a new rig, after the latest Ryzen chips are out and not quite so bleeding edge and expensive. Thanks for the years of support!

if your looking for a little extra go get yourself some 2400mhz ddr3 ram, it won't boot at 2400, have to dial it back to 2133. but you will notice a big difference over 1333. for gaming 2600k is still plenty of CPU upgrading is more of a luxury as opposed to a need! Gonna ride my 2600k into the ddr5 age. 9/10 games I'm happy with it's performance. I cranked up the overclock from 4. 4ghz to 5. 0 a few years ago, hoping it would give me a reason to upgrade. this chips a champ and has endured 90c 8hr gaming sessions for the past 2 years. it's a beast, best CPU I have ever owned, hands down.

I have 2600K and I got a lot more life from it going from 12GB ram to 24GB and upgrading my old ssd to a new samsung 860. That was after getting a ROG 1070 and now on a lot of games you I can get upwards of a hundred or 200fps in different games. Also Gordon, considering how long my chip has been relevant and the insane amount of overclocking it can bang out there is NO WAY that it is an -old honda civic with 350k miles on it-, maybe a classic ferrari or porsche certainly not a civic lol. The Cheel of it; -)

Nice to know my Z77 mb and i7-2600k-4, 5ghz still has some life in it!
Upgraded my gpu to a RX570 itx recently, cheap on ebay and good enough for most games at 1080p/high settings for 60-80fps. All I need for my casual gaming.
The more important question is (I think); do most people REALLY need all the performance that the newest pc parts give, want/would be cool if money was unlimited sure. ;)
There are other things in life to spend money on to, after all.

Better make a home NAS or PF Sense out of that CPU. I have a 2600. I don't know how, but I'm looking forward to do that. You guys do decent stuff so I'm asking you --Please help--
There are alot of pre-built solutions out there, but I've put money on that thing (as many of you) & I don't want to throw it off for a garbage price. An old quad core like 2500 or 2600 is pretty decent contender for data storage. It will give it a new life, probably more 10+ years.

Funny, I have an I7 2600 (no K) and a radeon 850 (so I dont have to supply aux power to it) and I only play 2 games really, SWTOR and World of Warships and I get a steady 60 FPS with mostly all high settings (Light on the shadows) and i am not gonna upgrade till I can get a 3900x and an r1500 XT in a new case with new everything. (My parts picker is at 1600 bucks as of now) It will be a while. I want it to last over 8 years like my present computer has.

Thanks, guys, great video. I am running a 2600k with a 1080 Ti, still able to get 60fps plus at 1440p on games with close to max settings. I sometimed have to dial down a bit to get those frames up but games still look great. What is holding me back from upgrading to the new AMD Zen 3 and Big Navi is that I want new tech like DDR5, UPS 4, Thunderbolt, etc on my new motherboard. But I might be dead by then! LOL

If your looking for something to upgrade. Upgrade your Monitor to 4k, buy 2400MHz ram and overclock more to 4. 6 - 5. 0ghz. Get a better cooler (noctua or bettter case) or even your GPU, then live off it and see what happens. 4K is becoming common and default. Experience that first, before you throw away your money to a new motherboard and CPU. Then you will know whether its worth it.

I have 2600k (without overclock mind you) with rx580 with 16gb ram it still works like a butter, in 2020 i still play a lot of games on High settings even Ultra with nice graphic tweaks, this processor deserved every penny i spent on it
