I'd love to be able to not only install Warcraft 3 ROC and Frozen Throne ( I have the original cd retail disc battlechess set), but to get my damn shortcuts ( aka symbolic links) to work from within my Games folder/directory WITHOUT having to copy all of the damn ddl files, and other bs files JUST for that shortcut to work..
and
to be able to play the game in 2560x1440p resolution like I can in windows via it recognizing the regedit.exe resolution tweaks
rezwidth and rezheight
the problem is, the damn links DON'T somehow...connect to the Wine shortcut launchers in which I've made those registry tweaks from and it still at best comes to 1600x1200 resolution.

This is really cool - this is like seeing history in the making. There are a ton of issues and lots of broken games but with each new major update from Steam and GPU manufacturers we are starting to see the potential for launch day triple A titles to have full Linux support out of the box. Steam is bringing so many new users and developers over to the platform that will all help make Linux better for everyone :)
More games -> better GPU support -> More business grade applications -> more business adoption -> more Linux devs -> less closed source reliance.
Also, the crazy discounts on games are running my bank account dry this is like heroine for my PC.

After switching to 4.2-1 GTA V did not start at all. So I switched back to 3.16-8 beta and everything works just fine again. I'm wondering if I should upgrade my graphics card driver (now 410.104) because I remember that I 've had similar problems with 390 or so. But switching the graphics card driver just for that one game is always a risk so I think that I'll do the same thing as Chris does: Switching to the older version at least for GTA V and using the new one for games where it works - is there any way to do this automatically; I mean fixing the version to use for certain games?

This is great! I installed RE2 & DMC5 on a Windows drive but have hardly played them yet. I then archived the games as I always do for later installing on Ubuntu. They were 'free' with my RX 580 and activated at AMD Rewards using Windows just to be sure the GPU was recognized properly by the web site. I have no problem using different versions of Proton depending on the game. Several of my older DX9 only games are run using a fork of Proton with Gallium Nine Extras.

With Steam dropping XP users off the plank and probably 7 users in the next few years, at least this will hopefully be a more viable option for newer and older games. Shame I still won't be able to use the games I paid for on the platforms that support them natively on some of my classic gaming rigs just because their hosting service stopped caring enough to let them remain available to use. But I digress... Cheers.

You have inspired me to try Linux so I am trying it for the next 30 days and see if I miss Windows. Last time I did this like 10 years ago I definitely missed Linux especially after spending 4 hours just to get my vid drivers installed and desktop working on 2 monitors.

Chris I much I love your videos. I really wish you need to add anything else than your straight talking to the camera.
Some game footage, Some screenshots, some statistics charts anything, to avoid the monotonous themes of the video.
Keep it up.

Chris, if you were running Salient OS which is based on Arch, pretty much all your games will be working out the box. With no fiddling about. Some Battleye and Easy Anti-cheat games aren't running yet. Fallout 4 is working amazing.

I played RE2 on Manjaro, DXVK 3.16, 4.20 Nvidia 4.18 on Lutris via a -internet download- and it worked perfectly apart from some audio issues in the cut scenes ( had the same problem on W10 too ). So there's that.

I have to keep it dialed back to Proton 3.7 for Dark Forces 2 and Mysteries of the Sith to work. Everything else been fine on 3.16. havnt tried 4.2 yet. The improvements to the mesa vulcan drivers lately have been WOW
