De-Googling an Android 10 Phone - Rob Braxman Tech I go through the process of deciding how to configure an Android phone so there is no Google tracking of any sort in it. This video shows me using Android 10 AOSP on a Motorola Moto G7 Play (a 2019) phone, which currently has no support from LineageOS. I vet several apps for use in a de-Googled phone and describe how it is possible for Android apps from Google Play to work when no Google services are available. A Moto G7 Play is a Project Treble phone and uses a standard GSI (Generic System Image) Which then has to be configured to support a particular phone model. Not described in the video: This is a Android 10 GSI install, with no GAPPS and customized to work with the Motorola G7 Play

It seems it is hard to find accurate reliable info about installing custom roms. I was lead to believe there were only a few hard to find devices which you could install custom roms on and that you would need to connect the device to a PC. It was only due to some very unlikely circumstances that I discovered the truth which is Project Treble allows you to install custom roms on most modern devices without a PC. Unless I am missing something, it seems all you need (aside from a couple apps which can easily be downloaded in addition to a code to unlock the bootloader) is an SD memory card. You store a recovery app and an OS of choice along with some essential files to the card and then boot into recovery mode, run the aforementioned recovery app on the SD card, install the OS and other files on the phone using that recovery app then you are done (as far as installing a custom rom goes. That is far easier than the instructions one usually finds. And as I said you can do that with most current phones. You only need a device with an unlockable bootloader. It seems most modern devices have unlockable bootloaders but there are a few exceptions. It seems the more expensive devices are the ones with locked bootloaders. The less expensive options are the ones which have unlockable bootloaders.

Isn't there still some closed source OEM code running at a level below the OS in the baseband or firmware? Couldn't spying be done at that level? My understanding is project treble compliant phones have the OS and Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) separated. I'm guessing the HAL is where the OEM closed source code is found. Or am I wrong? Perhaps the different lineage OS builds for the different devices include open source alternatives for the HAL so that you are replacing all the manufacturer installed code with open source alternatives instead of leaving some closed source code from the manufacturer in the device. Or are the different lineage OS builds -customized- in some other way?

I signed into BraxMe but forgot password and well, like I said, I-m all thumbs with privacy security computers etc. Can you help? I don-t know how to not -infect you- by making contact. Other than here

I dont think any of this will work. Hear me out. When someone attempts to call me, I can see that my telco send a notification to google (with the persons ph number etc, that in-turn triggers the incoming call dialog on my phone. Google are aware of which devices belong to who based on ph/imei/mac etc. If you de-google your existing phone or use your existing number, its too late. Change my mind.

So Google develops Android, and yes I know it's open source, but has anyone really, I mean REALLY scrutinized the code to see if Google has put any back doors or other code in the OS that will counter any efforts to prevent tracking? ALSO, did you know that most of the major Linux distros are sponsored by the likes of Google, Amazon, MIT and IBM? They've got their fingers in every pie.

Rob, I like what you're doing and I wanted to mention many people are using firesticks myself Nvidia Shield and cannot see the description you should add your web address in your videos I think that would increase sales.
I wish you well sir

Rob, do you have a video or could you recommend steps to minimizing as much tracking as possible without installing a custom rom? I'm not looking to get rid of Google entirely, just want reduce the amount of tracking in the standard OS

Evening sir. I'm trying to found a reliable and privacy-friend office suite for Android. On F-Droid, Libre Office viewer app is not as good ad third parties ones or FOSS Linux ones, could you suggest me a good choice? Thank you!
