Mozilla No Longer Supports A Free Internet DistroTube

Mozilla No Longer Supports A Free Internet DistroTube Mozilla, a long-time champion of free and an open source software, recently posted a blog stating that the Internet needs more censorship. According to Mozilla, it is not enough that Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites ban bad actors. They want these sites to implement strategies to preemptively silence these people. They want an algorithm that punishes those that say the wrong things and reward those that post things that are factual. - https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2021/01/08/we-need-more-than-deplatforming/

I know this is a year old, and I hate to do it cause I love your videos DT, but I have to go on the record and say I disagree with the central tenet of this video. Mozilla aren't trying to stop free speech before it happens. They're saying we need to get rid of the 'opinion vacuum' algorithms that only reinforce one opinion to people of a particular political persuasion. If you did watch a bit more news (of all varieties) you'd see that the political fracturing of your nation into two very distinct and ultra hostile camps isn't doing anything good for your nation. My nation is going down the same route and it's terrifying. That fracturing and increased hostility is being reinforced by these algorithms. The only reason some of these opinions get so much airtime is because of these algorithms. How can folks make honest informed opinions without considering all sides?

This is appalling! So first you claim to not be political but then post the most politically charged video possible. Then you claim to not know about the January 6th terror attack but then describe exactly what happened?
You know exactly why Mozilla stood up for de-platforming violent extremists. If Mozilla stood up for de-platforming Al Queda you would be cheering. Instead Mozilla went for your beloved Trump supporters.
Everyone claiming to not be political is lying. You actions and inactions reveal your true political alignment. Either you are honest about it, or you pretend to hide it.
Switzerland tried to be neutral but in the end they only helped the Nazis. In this video, you are making a similar choice.
Anyone that sees violence and abuse, and responds with silence, is endorsing it. There is no way to slither out of it.

I'm sorry but form reading the article on the date of 07. October 2021 I cannot read your interpretation of -wants to silence certain voices-.
The phrases of concern are not ideally written. In particular -more than just temporary silencing- and -Additional (...) actions-, especially the second phrase concerns me. I'd rather wish it would omit the -additional- since that infers that the cencorship is a part of the package.
Without it the listed actions are about transparency and availability of information which are crucial to unravel the connections that some parties are trying desperately to hide.

YOU JUST CONTRADICTED yourself... you said NOT interested in TRUMP/BIDEN etc.. just things that effected billions--- like the FREE software movement.... WELL WHO DO YOU THINK IS BEHIND MOZILLA/GOOGLE TAKING OVER THE INTERNET??? THAT is why it's important to get the DUMBDEMB COMMIES OUT-- they want to control the INTERNET completely--- so they can publish their crappy commie propaganda and force people to do what they wANT... (and MUCH WORSE)... to avoid national politics is to let these commies TAKE OVER and FREE anything will NO LONGER BE!!!

With the tirade you went on at the beginning of the video, I figured you'd probably end up being right of centre, but with how you're deliberately misrepresenting Mozilla's words (despite them being right there on the screen), and your super weird comparison to communism, I don't think you'd place as far left as to be reasonably called centrist. This video is just an uneducated right-winger who got their panties in a tussle because they didn't understand what someone said and thought they meant that they want to remove free speech online.

About the house analogy: You have a very large house.
U keep inviting people in you house, and they eventually live, work, eat, love, break up, fight wars and make friends in your house.
They keep growing in numbers and you need to set up rules and - govern -.
At what point does your house actually becomes their common ground, i.e. a state? And when should these visitors gain the right for democracy?

reply

I can understand that you dont agree with their arguments but the proposed actions seem pretty reasonable to me except for -amplifying voices-.
Actually, advocating for algorithm disclosure (nothing mentioned about enforcing policies in algorithms) sounds a lot like pushing to bring at least some openness to closed platforms where we are impacted the most as a society. Which we, as FOSS community, should support.

I know this video is old, but I just can-t believe someone as intelligent as you would fall for the -it-s a private company- argument. Private companies don-t have the right to infringe upon the rights of others. Twitter is a public utility and must be regulated as such. Regulations are a good thing. Breaking up or controlling monopolies is a good thing.

Mozilla's main function for years has been as a buffer for Google to shield them from monopoly claims (-Chrome doesn't have monopoly, look at Firefox-). For years majority of Mozilla's revenue comes from Google - if Google really saw them as competitor, it could have eliminated them long time ago.

Be responsible with the stuff you promote my friend. Getting rid of Firefox will only let Google and other browsers dominate and likely continue doing the same or worse. Be responsible, that some uneducated dude may listen to this crap and stop using Firewall, ultimately hurting us all.
