Want To Switch To Linux But Need Notepad++? DistroTube I keep getting comments from viewers of the channel saying that they would like to switch from Windows to Linux, but they can't switch because they need Notepad++. Now this is a strange comment to me considering how many text editors that we have on Linux. But, I will show you how to get Notepad++ installed on Linux, and I will also show you a native Linux text editor that mimics Notepad++. - https://notepad-plus-plus.org/ - Notepad++ - https://www.winehq.org/ - Wine - https://notepadqq.com/ - Notepadqq

I have been using Linux since 1998..And even longer in Unix, Solaris and Windows, and I have used Literrall everything!! throughj the years, emacs, vim(my go to in linux), KDevelop, Komodo, Gedit, XCode(Mac OSX), MS Visual Studio(all the way from version VC6 to now), Borland, Dev c++, Eclipse. But you clearly have'nt used Notepad++ extensively, it is by far the best editor for it's light weight, ease of usability, completeness, agility, options and stability. By saying there are thousands of editors,etc.. , it compararble to saying -why do you need need this one single luxury porshe sports car??? you have the option to ride 1000's of different old bicycles here..- ....Not too convincing..
And I personally hate starting up Wine and have more processes in the background, and more layers of bugs of possible crashes/freezes, and slowed emulation,etc. And to top, Linux unfortunately has become very bloated and catching up to Windows and Mac in the bloated department. Linux 20 or 10 years ago, could proudly say it was -lightening fast AND light- and ran even on old hardware(why I used it PROFUSELY in the 90's and early 2000's)....but not a bragging point anymore..
Heck I would take the time to port it Linux... but again, the whole working for practically free thing due to GNU Copy Left, is not for me..I although I 100% fully support opensource software, but you have to be indepently wealthy AND have to time to program open source, ...or live in your mother's basement..or all of the above..

When I switched to Linux over a year ago, I felt the need of using Notepad++ way too many times. I used some random text editor that came with Mint, and I was depressed. Then encountered Kate, which I used for editing one file, and I fell in love with it. Even tried Notepad QQ few weeks ago, which really felt like Notepad++, though Kate offers many more options, but doesn't provide column selecting like Notepad ++/QQ, where you can press Shift+Alt and use arrow keys to highlight text however you want, it can be solved with -search and replace- option IF you really need it (so far I haven't needed that option in years). I've been a Notepad++ user for at least 9 years as well - used it for nearly everything. There's technically no difference between Notepad++ (QQ) and Kate, though in my personal view, Kate saves and browses stuff much faster (might be just bias) and definitely has more customization than Notepad++/QQ.

There are features in Notepad++ that i've not seen in another text editor or are just implemented much better in Notepad++. I went searching for a Notepad++ replacement as I use MacOSX and Linux more than Windows, so I wanted an editor that was open source and worked the same on all three platforms, the best I have found so far is Atom but it's a long way short of Notepad++ but it does 95% of what I need it to. I've not used Notepadqq but it looks like there are no packages for either MacOSX or Windows, compile to install is not an option for me.

Notepadqq doesn't install on fedora 33.
Problem: package notepadqq-1.4.8-13.fc33.x86_64 requires nodejs-shelljs, but none of the providers can be installed
- package nodejs-shelljs-0.8.4-2.fc33.noarch requires (npm(rechoir) >= 0.6.2 with npm(rechoir) < 0.7), but none of the providers can be installed
- conflicting requests
- nothing provides (npm(resolve) >= 1.1.6 with npm(resolve) < 2) needed by nodejs-rechoir-0.6.2-8.fc32.noarch
Any help?

Good video. I'll nitpick a little regarding the comparison ++ vs. qq. I installed both, same steps as you did there, and it appears notepadqq cannot record and run macros, like you can in Notepad++. At least I did not see that option in the menus. So notepadqq would not quite cut it for me. Not that I'm being kept in Windows by that particular detail, but under Windows I do use Notepad++ a lot even though I've mostly switched to vscode for coding.

It... is on linux...
It's one of the programs consistently on the front page of the 'ubuntu software' app store. It's also listed on snapcraft. Aside from the fact that it isn't even that special of a program (I mean, it has some cool features but it's just a text editor, not even like a full-fledged IDE or anything), it's absurdly easy to find linux downloads for this. I'm not entirely convinced anyone really said this.

1:39 nope, not totally unusual. there are other applications too which are open source but are available only on windows.
the reason i think is the gui toolkits and stuff like
- this one npp is tied to windows by win32 api i guess , and
- sharex is tied to windows by C#
so... i dont know how difficult (in comparison) is the devt with other gui toolkits, but this certainly seem to be prominent enough.

I use notepad++. It is custom configued to highlight bash heredocs as I want. I have hundreds of files that rely on it. I have been waiting for a linux port for years. Notepadqq may be similar, but I need something that is the same in how I configure it. I have said many times that the only reason I am stuck on Windows is notepad++. Any argument is simply a lack of understanding. I still hope for a port.

I watched the full video. You can disregard what I said about Notepad++ setup for Linux. I didn't realize you were going to do it in this video. But, man, this was a really useful video. I didn't know how Wine created all the same Windows directories. I'm new to Linux, so I am now seeing how switching would be so easy to do. I just didn't know. I also get what Wine is doing. Very cool.

From how you presented and compared -notepad++- and -notepadqq- I think you still do not know why people like -notepad++-.
Every hard fan of -notepad++- who was watching your video must have been laugh out loud.
-Save as- and -menu-, those things you have even in OpenOffise (or Libre) man, you are so funny. -----
