Windows Users Need To Install These Programs IMMEDIATELY! DistroTube Are you a Windows user? If so, have you heard about free and open source software (or FOSS)? Free and open source software is safer, more secure, and often just plain better than the proprietary, closed source software that comes pre-installed on Windows. I will show you some of the best FOSS programs available on Windows. - https://www.mozilla.org/ - Firefox - https://www.thunderbird.net/ - Thunderbird - https://www.libreoffice.org/ - LibreOffice - https://www.videolan.org/ - VLC - https://www.gimp.org/ - GIMP - https://inkscape.org/ - Inkscape - https://www.audacityteam.org/ - Audacity - https://kdenlive.org/ - Kdenlive - https://obsproject.com/ - OBS - https://filezilla-project.org/ - FileZilla - https://www.7-zip.org/ - 7Zip

I respectfully disagree with you on this one. if I want to lure users to linux I will suggest them free and open source software that is as good or better than the windows program. Many programs like GIMP or KDENLIVE are not better than photoshop or After FX or premiere. they just aren't, and even if you could prove me they are they still would screw with the workflow of these people.
SO my strategy would be a bit different from yours. if I want them to go to linux and get a taste of it I'd recommend software they use that is already on linux like chromium or if it's not on linux I'd recommend a program that does the exact task the exact way.
These users will be confused wit how linux operates. There's no need to confuse them any further. in time when they connect with other linux users they will slowly change their tone regarding certain programs.

really love opera gx it looks amazing and i think its worth loading the gx corner. a sweet little tab. I'm keeping waterfox on standby in case something doesnt work. maybe i should get a theme for waterfox and see if i can load a game release link on the new tab page. dont like vlc at all. used to use it when i was younger. dont get programs from windows store if its available as a installer. potplayer best for windows for linux mvplayer or one of the other high rated ones. vlc is a all inclusive solution but you can get x265 to work on the others. davinci is what im trying now for editing but i might switch to shotcut. davinci doesnt support mkv which sucks really bad but i can start filming in mp4 and handbrake my others.sumatrapdf, fragment image viewer, foobar2000 some of my other default programs.

I am used to Windows versions that did not feature Microsoft Store. I totally ignored this feature in Win 10. Is it really that popular among Windows users?
Edge was a really good browser. Much faster and less resource-hungry than google chrome and all the browsers using its engine. Unfortunately today everything is basically chrome or firefox. Even edge. So we have freedom but no choice.
BTW - assumption that propietary soft always contains spyware is like assumption that the person of different race next to you wants to rob and kill you. You can never be sure, right?

For non windows users who have to use windows anyway, people like DistroTube ,go to ninite.com.
There is a list of apps , most are free or pretty close to free. You check all the apps you want and download the installer link. You then open the installer and all the programs you choose get installed without the bloatware, browser add-ons, and basic crap you may encounter by downloading and installing from other 3rd party websites made to trick users into thinking they're at the official program's website.

Firefox is dieing becouse of mismanagement, it's time to ditch it, in fact it was time when FF4 came out. Also there is no going around Chrome for many web pages.
Libreoffice is OK-ish, but slow on Windows as opposed to MS Office. But MS Office 2003 was the last good MS Office, so anyone who wants something more up to date might want to switch.
VLC is good, but the very best mediaplayer on Windows is Media Player Classic, even though it is now discontinued.
The rest are fine.

I wish I knew about these a decade ago when I was on a Mac. Well, cross-platform and free as in free beer were higher priorities. I really thought my only option was to pay for stuff like the Adobe suite. - It's so nice to know that so many free [beer] and cross-platform apps are FOSS.
Ironically, taking a tutorial class on Photoshop from my library was my gateway to GIMP. It's really just Microsoft Paint (or AppleWorks!) on steroids. Wow I regret learning this so late.

I'm trying my best to make the jump to Linux completely. The issue is, I'm an Architect. And the softwares essential to my work (Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, etc which are industry standards) are not available on Linux. I use blender for my 3d modelling work but until BlenderBIM becomes a thing, my hands feel kinda tied. I'm gonna try dual booting.. Let's see how far that gets me

LOL...
When I was stuck with Windows I only launched Edge/ IE to download Firefox. Firefox was my only browser since early 2000s and still is. People often told me it is low and blah blah but I honestly don't care.
The only real ace in Windows eco system is Outlook - there is honestly no competitor to it except KMail & Evolution who come pretty close.

I've been using Windows privately since 2008 and since then I've only been using Free and Open Source, ok, with games that's not always feasible, rather seldom ..... I particularly hate what I call -subscription rip-off price models-, many greetings to Adobe and Microsoft 365/Office

Hi DT, do you know any free and open source software for digital signing PDFs (with digital certificates)? Now I have to bring up a Windows VM with Adobe PDF installed (yes, very ugly) because I didn't find a good alternative. But I really want to get rid of it. Thanks!
