Steve, I'm a longtime viewer and regarding your commentary at the end, I have some observations. First, I don't think you realize the pattern that you yourself are falling into, and that is alarmist news. You used the phrase sticking one's head in the sand, which is interesting to me because an elderly relative who is utterly obsessed with hating Trump and hangs on every single word he says (to become enraged over) tells me that I have my head in the sand because I do not pay the same level of attention. I would argue that this is garbage activity and waste of mental energy. Taking this back to GN, I think if you spent half of the time you currently spend complaining about the woeful state of our world and how awful things are to PRESENTING ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS OR REAL, PRODUCTIVE COUNTER-ACTIVITIES THAT YOUR VIEWERS CAN DO, then you would actually be leading the way to change. Right now I don't see you as much more than just another drop in the bucket of complaining negative attention media, although I happen to agree with your views more. (But since I've become aware of how this kind of media is just going to drain my energy, I tend to skip through the angry rants. I know, I agree. I don't need further validation through your anger, if that makes sense. Give me some concrete actions to take that I haven't already thought of, and then I will be taking your very, very seriously, especially compared to the other news swill out there.)

I am one that is in the entry level phone market. A basic phone that is usable here in Aus used to be about $500 in 2023 (more than double my last phone in 2018), this will probably be my last smart phone and its dying faster than the last one. I have already replaced the battery with an ifixit kit, but the phone just seems glitchy no matter what.
If there was a way to get an old nokia from 20 years ago and add 4G comparability, I probably will. To get 2 weeks on a charge were the glory days in phone tech, not to mention the ability to go into standby until reception became available again, unlike smart phones which go bonkers pinging to try find a tower for it to then go from 8 hours of battery to less than 1 because they never put the logic in like nokia did.

This is how the techbros are shaping the future of humanity, where you don't own anything, and you will be happy, while they own and control everything. The future PC we can finally afford will require a constant connection to an AI data center. It will act as a terminal dependent on its AI host. You don't need to own anything, since AI will provide you with everything you need. It will also come with the latest version of Palantir's Ever Watchful Eye. The idea of a free public internet, privacy, net neutrality, and the Complete unredacted Epstein files is over once the data centers go online.

Appreciate the note at the end, it's a fine line to walk when talking about these kind of big world events that affect your lives, even if you're not in the directly affected region.
On the one side, you don't want to depress everybody with war, shortages, ethical and moral concerns, or manage to push them away from caring about these things.
But on the other, you still want to bring these kinds of things to the minds of people, who maybe have enough on their lives to deal with, but still need to be aware that their rights as consumers are being eroded.

The Mice & Men thing is awesome, and yes he's right. I mean, have you guys heard Thunder Force IV, Alien Soldier, Wolverine Adamantium Rage or the Streets of Rage games
Yuzo Koshiro made any machine he touched _sing._ Anyway, already knew about the Myrient news but it still pisses me off. Found them through FreeMediaHeckYeah, truly fantastic archive
And sucks for little Sammy, Palantir beat them into suckling the government teat. And I know why he calls it DoW, same reason the Zucc caved and removed FB fact-checking to appease Trump

So I work in IT at a company big enough to have weekly meetings with our Microsoft account representative about new features, outstanding tickets etc. (nothing special and I'm sure many colleagues around the world are in a similar position, it's not fortune 500 or anything).
I started joining these meetings very recently and of course our account exec _has_ to ask us whether we're using Copilot and whether we find it useful. I'm sure that's pushed on customer reps just as it's pushed down everyone elses's throat at MS.

Next day update: Driver 595.71 fixes the fan issue but caps voltage on cards, including my stock 1 day old 5080 Asus Prime.
Quickfix released the very same day 595.76 which doesn't fix the issue (for me) !!
I was also surprised to discover a new scam by Nvidia: To redeem your Resident Evil free game you must have purchased your RTX5080 from the most expensive retailers of your country, effectively paying 400-500 over the overpriced already 40% MSRP to get your free game!
THANKS NVIDIA !!!

If people want to actually cause problems for Open AI they should cancel their subscription and then use the service as often as possible for absolutely pointless and nonsense tasks. Overload the service and make them spend more without earning any revenue. That's how you actually make it hurt. They WANT you to stop using the service to free up their resources. This integration is yet another reason (reminder) to refrain from sharing sensitive or personal data with these type of services btw.

But don't forget that AMD has the very best drivers for Linux because they did the smart thing and released the source code to the community. The compatibility with Windows games with proton these days is incredible and the performance of the drivers often stomps windows into the ground. One thing I can say is since I set up AMD Linux box this time around, I have not seen a single driver related crash and I have not been able to say that about a single PC in history until now.

i worked at data center as senior lead technical engineer keeping the place running 24/7, for over 25 years, so i know whats what in the world of computing and who and what is doing what, of all types of businesses coming and going thru the years. = A SPECIAL NOTE EVERYONE WILL ARGUE WITH ME ABOUT THIS BUT ITS TRUE - THE SO CALLED - AI claims are currently all a TOTAL SCAM - this is a fact, they are just fancy data base driven call ups for data collections. nothing more.

Oh boy, fans that don't spin because of drivers again! Have novideo not learned from their disaster of the geforce 9/200 series blunder Not including all the prior ones like the bump gate blunder, oh lets not forget the FX f'ck up, oh and the driver cheating for benchmarks cos the FX sucked. But there was a bright future though beyond these, like when -Fermi- Thermi (the way it's meant to be grilled) would melt and blow up, but that's ok because they had PissX!

Huge companies vibecoding is quite interesting... Because they apparently take a stubborn, passive-aggressive stance about getting caught and continuing with it - almost like the CEO himself is doing it or it's part of their brand - instead of just demanding better from their highly-paid employees.
(It may not be vibecoding every time, but almost certainly that happens, and if I'm not mistaken it has been pretty much confirmed a few times.)

The AI bubble is worse when you link the different issues. Nobody needs the amount of compute for anything that will drive revenue other than white collar jobs, those jobs provide a large portion of the tax base for all western nations, large corporation replaces tax paying workers, economy collapses and government collapses at the same time. Not going to be fun for anyone including 99% of the idiots investing in that outcome.

I understand being anti-government, but to think China isn't going to use AI is illogical. CIting the IRGC as a source is hilarious btw. That is a pretty weak source and shows massive bias. You are aware they said they sank one of our aircraft carriers, right Credibility is no longer granted to you, and that sucks, I used to think you did due diligence and wouldn't just chug the partisan bs.

What kind of idiot design a GPU where the fans are controlled by software This is Radeon Vega all over again, just put a simple temperature controlled, closed loop fan system, totally independent of the GPU itself and that's it, it's not rocket science if I can do it , I'm nobody, sure they also can on a multi thousand dollar gpu

3:11 The Donkey Kong Country soundtracks for the SNES, or I think generally early David Wise soundtracks for Rare, were also very interesting like that. It required very creative, abstract approaches, and it's still one of the most listenable musics there are.
But indeed that was probably a common requirement for those composers.

I really liked Steve’s comment at the end. I think the important part about this in a more broader way is that a lot of these AI products/companies are about abstracting human experience and averaging out all the rough edges of life into slop. By keeping the human angle to this stuff you can push against it in a small way I think.
