Fixing the Alienware R13 Dumpster Fire

We're trying to fix the 5000 Alienware R13 for as cheap as possible. The R13 is one of the worst pre-builts we've ever reviewed, so we're trying to see if it's salvageable. The Alienware pre-built is one of the worst we ve ever reviewed: using alien technology, they turned an i9 into an i7. Alienware, owned by Dell, seems dead-set on continuing to pump-out trash instead of improving. The design faults are far beyond the case -- Alienware's BIOS is so incomplete that it doesn't even include fan speed controls, the power toggles are all locked (likely because the motherboard VRM is way underspec), and the motherboard is limiting. Fortunately, the case can natively fit larger radiators; unfortunately, Dell doesn't offer those, so we decided to do it ourselves.

i actually took my first gaming pc from microcenter a dell xps 8900 and junked it. I paid like 800 for an i7 6700. without the k. and then rebuilt it because the guy wouldnt let me open it and said it came with a graphics card and when I took it home it had a gt730 in it when the 900 series was out and I hadnt a clue it was a media computer for literally browsing through photos. lol. or editing pictures. it wasnt even for gaming. it came with a couple sd card slots that wouldnt let go of the eject from media button in the taskbar even if there was nothing in it so i had to physically remove the ports from the computer. lol. so the case looked wacked out. i think it was a recall. hahaha

What do you think about flipping the stock 120mm radiator around and mounting it on the exterior of the case (using the same mounting holes)? I guess you'd have to cut the grill out so you could pass the CPU block through the hole, and then cut a cut a small hole/groove for the hose. That would theoretically avoid the problems of Dell's proprietary setup, and also avoid the problems from the poor air flow. Potentially the CPU cooling would still be insufficient, but I imagine it would be a lot better.

Going pre-built is for the simplicity. The real fix here is don't buy Alienware, clearly, because your fix is basically build half of it yourself so why not just build it entirely ourselves and get everything right from the start? Or buy from a different company lol. (And to be clear, I'm not trying to imply your solution is even remotely the issue. Just that the issue, Alienware giving shit builds, requires too much effort to be worth it)

Maybe you can sell this one to Dell, plus costs made by yourself, hehe :) btw, their SFF pro line, does have one vent, on the front, and is also for cooling the CPU and the case, if you hold your hand on the backside, you feel hot warmth leaving the case. And these things are selling by millions for business work. In every office, I see these, or HP, or Lenovo. And above that, they keep working, even if they are sold to second hand market.

i have an alienware area 51 M and i have the same problem in the bios. You can set the core clocks for the CPU in the bios and sometimes i have to restart the computer 3 or 4 times to get the overclocking feature to activate . Sometimes its greyed out and you cannot access it. I enjoy my alienware area 51m ALOT and i use it for everything but the most annoying part about it is that alienware BIOS/Software is absolutely horrendous.

my first monitor was Dell talking year 2000 it was crap then and died soon. A m8 of mine bought Dell a high end one the same year. same shit as this alienware that was the point I said I would never buy anything from Dell. More then 20 years has passed there still at it... its just mind boggling they still exist.
if I see anyone who has a Dell I explain it to them so they would never buy it again.

Quite rightly lambasts Alienware over two long videos for their over the top expensive, unnecessary and actually counter-productive case design.
But also in this video; chooses the most expensive 240 cooler because 'it has a display that can display a cat with sunglasses on'... that in the end doesn't actually work.
Laugh out loud moment - either a new level of irony or meme-worthy.

The fact it has the support for a 240 rad and doesn't have it has an option is a bit silly.
Another minor improvement would be to increase the gap for the acrylic on the front, then they can still keep the look but at least have it a bit less abhorrent.
It is though interesting how they have just taken a server PSU, now it is likely very good quality, except for fan noise...

This hurts my heart. My dad is an IT for an international engineering company, he got my son the r12 last year and a couple weeks ago got this machine for my daughter all on points. It's just funny that my daughter gets the one PC that the first video I watch the poor thing gets s on for 20 minutes by you. Lol so I'm going to watch this video now and see if I can repair my ego

Alienware is an industry joke. If they just created a completely logical, easy access, non proprietary case.. it would go a long way. But they don't even have the imagination to do that. Their computers are average at best, and the cases even worse. That's what happens when you sell your soul to the country dedicated to making the world cheaper.
