
Investigating NVIDIA’s Defective GPUs: RTX 5080 Missing ROPs Benchmarks

I rate this situation a 3.5/4.
I work in metrology with SEMs (scanning electron microscopes) for a living. This is something that really should have come up in defect analysis and defect review, but from what I know TSMC has skipped that part of the process in recent years and goes straight to unit testing. TSMC has the mindset of just make more wafers and just scrap and recycle everything that has a problem no questions asked.
So this should come up in unit testing then right It's possible to miss the missing rops on a card that otherwise is fully functional, as the card will boot and run, but its also very easy TSMC's yields on this node were just awful and they knew it, and combined with their very limited metrology method, their Q&A shipped bad units anyways.
Nvidia knew about the issues because theres a lot of design back and forth from the R&D engineers at nvidia to the process engineers at TSMC. If this issue was never found in Nvidias extremely limited lab testing, and then TSMC never told them until shit hit the fan, this could be grounds for a major lawsuit from one company to the other. If TSMC shared the issue and Nvidia was the one to give the green light on shipping defective units with a ford pinto mindset of get the product out now and deal with the lawsuits later, then they'll be dealing with the lawsuits later.
But my money is on the latter, because they have investors to please and the biggest stock bubble in history to maintain. Not the first time nvidias done this at a hardware level (hello gtx 970). But this does speak volumes to TSMC's node and their dominance in the market.

I’d imagine that records are kept on who has QCd what lot of parts, and probably how many. So if one operator has produced dodgy data, it would be easy to infer how many parts were impacted.
While I don’t doubt the GPUs are lot controlled, it doesn’t appear (as far as I can tell) that the silicon is serial controlled. So Nvidia would have knowledge of the affected lots (multiple people can work the same lot), and quantities, but not the exact parts.
Depending on the timeline of the discovery, I’d have probably made tools available for board partners to add this check in their final QC, along with reimbursements for time cost and rework.
Though if cards were already in distributor hands by the time this problem was discovered, there wasn’t much left to be done.

Need advice. I want to buy a main PC for Computer Vision work such as Model training (Yolo) and inference. There are 2 Options:
A) 5090 Ryzen 9 9950X 64gb RAM
B) 5090 i9-14900KF 64 gb RAM
I saw that i9-14900KF has big issues. So i will prefer the AMD CPU. I was not sure if there are compatibility issues however found nothing what matters. Only OpenVino works officially with Intel only but its irrelevant to me.
Also I want to buy a second PC for inference only with large models which daily analyses 10 hour Videos while detecting defined objects and blur them.
Training requires much more VRAM than Inference. So I want the main PC to be a 5090. The second PC can be a 5080 or 5070ti with 16gb VRAM and 32gb RAM.

I don't see the problem here. Production mishaps and lack of communication happen in every field of work and graphics cards are no exception. Of course we would like that everything would go without any issues but we are humans and humans make errors. This is another reason we need AI and fortunately, nVidia is playing a big part in advancing AI so we should not forget our support to nVidia. Gamers are such a wild group of people, unfortunately they often lack the life experience and ability to see the bigger picture. Anyway, as a consumer, even if you receive a faulty product, just get a free replacement and life goes on. People have been in the trenches of war during D-Day, you just need to have a bigger, mature perspective of the world.

This clearly shows Nvidia's apathy towards gamers as consumers. They only hurt their own reputation launching these half baked cards, deprecating their own proprietary technology, insisting on a power connector with obvious issues, and now getting caught in 4K without fake frames releasing known defective cards with already very low stock. This 50 series release feels exactly like one of those movies that get made so the studio doesn't loose the license to the intellectual property. They only made these because they felt like they had to instead of making something they actually wanted to which would be AI cards based on profit.

AMD _AND_ Intel have been served the opportunity of a lifetime on a silver platter. If Intel can get stock of B580/B570s and if AMD can also have stock of the 9070/9070XT then they can carve out an entire chunk of the market just from the reputation Nvidia is making for themselves now. Hell, it’s like they’re doing this on purpose to preemptively avoid being hit with monopoly or antitrust stuff, like they are literally, giving, AMD and Intel a chance to catch up in this race, tripping over their own feet on purpose.

People are getting scammed by NVidia and Dell , Lenovo etc, you can buy a top of the line Dell or Lenovo built in 2012, that performs just as well as current computers. You I'll not see any difference in your monitor or big screen. Even mining but coin you build an old unit for $500 with 256g ram. This would cost $9000 for a new one. 18 old computers running bit coin mining will have a better ROI then new computers.

I'm done with Nvidia. I was legitimately excited about RTX 5000 back in November, and built a whole new PC with the intent of dropping a 5090 in it come January when they were released. Obviously just like 99.999% of people who wanted a 5090, I didn't get one and was bummed at the time. Now I see that I dodged a bullet. Looks like a 9070 XT will be going in my new PC (Fingers crossed).

The issue with just taking the defective card back to the store is some stores very much do, whether purposefully or not, re-stock defective products. Make sure the store understands the product is defective, or someone else is gonna get the problem card and might not realize it's a problem because they ddidn't watch this or other videos out there discussing ROPs..

Man I work in electronics. If we mess up and miss parts or don't do everything the cust wanted we break our back to make it right. We pay all shipping we'll refund a bit we'll do whatever work needs to be done the moment it gets back to the shop. We're still making money while doing right by the cust. Can't believe Nvidia really doesn't care.

What's the big deal, really They'll replace the products. That's what you get with mass productions, they can't all be perfect. The only people whining are the ones that can't afford it anyway. Go buy a used card that has the best possible driver already tested and proven on it. Every new generation product has its issues. #smdh

Nvidia knew damn well that this problem existed. They limited the launch because of it. As soon as this issue was discovered by the public they had a response within an hour. You do not just identify this type of thing and know how much of production is affected by it in an hour. They HOPED it would fly under the radar.

What is insane ... is how people how they can blindly support Nvidia. My brother and i are in agreement that ONE ... we cannot afford an Nvidia card ... TWO the BS they have been pulling is just BS. In light of AMDs pricing I’m hopeful but I myself won’t need to upgrade for awhile. Happy with my 7800XT

Could Nvidia perhaps release some kind of vBIOS or firmware update that enables all disabled sectors of the die They could even promote this as an apology to the community and spruik the extra performance that all 50 series cards will now get as a result.
