China restricting those minerals is NOT meant to hurt us (or the semiconductor industry) AT ALL.... it is a MESSAGE.... You see there are many MANY much MUCH MORE IMPORTANT so called 'rare earth' minerals that are NEEDED in the semiconductor AND OTHER industries that ARE NOT readily available to the US that WOULD slow down (and possibly even SHUT DOWN) some VERY IMPORTANT 'cogs' in the tech industry 'machines'
China is the ONLY source for some VERY important minerals, but it's not just the availability in the ground.... Most of these 'rare Earths' can be found in high concentrations all around the world.... BUT extracting them, separating them, purifying them, processing them... all that good stuff, is ONLY done in CHINA. And there are a couple of VERY GOOD REASONS for that... first of all COST... it requires a LOT of specialized equipment that has only ONE use for ONE element and is used in ONLY ONE step out of 150 to get ONE element, and it cost 3 million to build (this is all just a made up example, I don't know ANY of the specifics of extracting and processing any of these element... it just to give you an idea of WHY CHINA OWNS THE RARE EARTH INDUSTRY) you also have to factor in the TIME it takes to go through these processes... and say 1 step out of those 150 could take 2 full days of constant monitoring and specific responses... as in it REQUIRES a human to do it because building a robot and computer vison, etc is too costly or just isn't good enough, so ONLY a human can do it.... you have to pay someone to stand there and do this for 48 hours (or 4 or 5 people to take shifts or whatever).. labor is VERY CHEAP in China.... but NOT IN AMERICA... In China a basic laborer earns in ONE DAY what an American would get in ONE HOUR.... so you just DON'T DO THIS IN AMERICA.... lol
But then you say 'well move it to India or Vietnam because labor is super cheap there, and they have the same minerals, and it could be done there, you just have to move it.... Well that's great and all and yea it COULD be moved there.... but you HAVE TO factor in the POLLUTION and ABSOLUTE DESTRUCTION OF THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT where these Rare Earth are produced.... it is 100% DESTROYED... That is about 60% because China does not GIVE A DANG about their (or anyone else's) environment and they just POUR OUT TOXIC WASTEW INTOTHE RIVER AND JUST DONT THINK ABOUT DOWNSTREAM.... and the GOVERNMENT DOESN'T CARE EITHER!!!! - You have NO IDEA HOW DISGUSTING AND EVIL THE CCP (and China in return) REALLY IS!!!!! - All you need tyo know is that even if you applied modern safety and pollution prevention standards and measure, there would still be A WHOLE LOT OF TOXIC WASTE WHEN YOU ARE DONE..... and keep the environment clean COSTAS A LOT OF MONEY!!! That is EXACTLY WHY China just doesn't care what they do with the waste... because it is TOO EXPENSIVE FOR THEM TO CARE.... but they SURE DO CARE ABOUT HIDING IT!!!! I mean did YOU know about all of these TRUTHS I didn't think so. That because CHINA IS THE LAND OF SHORTCUTS AND FACADES!!!!!

19:47 The very least we can do is not contribute to another's Liberties being subjugated, in my humble opinion, even if that costs us slightly more at the check out in our consumer driven economy. Perhaps we will consume less and enjoy life more as a result...
If all you care about is economy, then the trade deficit should deeply concern you too. It drives down the value of the American worker and so too their wages, and it drives up the national debt. If we can't pay our debts, the value of the dollar collapses, and the economy with it...
It is not a man's duty, as a matter of course, to devote himself to the eradication of any, even the most enormous wrong; he may still properly have other concerns to engage him; but it is his duty, at least, to wash his hands of it, and, if he gives it no thought longer, not to give it practically his support. If I devote myself to other pursuits and contemplations, I must first see, at least, that I do not pursue them sitting upon another man's shoulders. -Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience

Personally I think the anti-cheat issue would be less of a problem if game companies would stop rug-pulling Linux users. A lot of games did support Linux either natively or under Proton, sometimes explicitly and sometimes not, but then they decide that they can't be bothered anymore and pull support. The issue I take with it is that they were happy to take Steam Deck and Linux users money, but then when it comes to actually supporting them they can't be bothered. GTA V is a good example of this, it was one of the most played games on Steam Deck since its release but then they just removed Linux multiplayer support with Easy Anti-Cheat (despite the fact Easy Anti-Cheat supports Linux) despite the fact that Linux players likely bought GTA V due to its prior support and spent money on its microtransactions. I understand they never officially supported Linux, but taking people's money for a product and then out of nowhere removing their access to that product just doesn't sit right with me.

I love how when the steam deck released, a bunch of other companies like MSI tried to do a similar thing in reaction to it. Which they were never going to do untill steam took that market share.
And after releasing their product, they kept supporting it instead of quitting because the competition got involved. The effort they have put into this is incredible, and I think that as of now, the official steam deck is the best thing in the market for this type of product. I have had mine for 2 years now and love it.
Edit: I have 3 friends that have a similar product. 1 has the steam deck as well, 1 has the MSI off brand, and i am not sure what the last one is, but its not msi or steam deck. Both the non steam decks have had no end of issues.
Steam deck had consistently delivered on performance.

I switched from Windows to Linux earlier this year. When comparing the two, Linux does leave a little to be desired in the overall user interface when consistency is considered. It makes up for it in price (free, or make a donation of what you think is fair), the overall experience is decent, and it genuinely runs virtually all windows software as well as Windows does. Much of the software, particularly most of my games, actually run faster than on Windows. Steam OS being brought up to date, and KEPT up to date, would completely remove the barrier that I think most people see when considering moving from Windows to Linux. As it is, it does take some research and fine tuning to make applications (particularly games) work well under Linux. Steam OS would be the plug and play variant that is needed.

I'm certain that that desktop/full release of SteamOS will be rough, with plenty of growing pains to work through as a new operating system and honestly I don't even care. The Steam Deck version of the OS has already proven the potential. I'll gladly go through the growing pains if it means I can finally have a good, user friendly alternative to Windows.
Yes I use Linux already. I've got a build of Manjaro that I've become quite comfortable with over the past year that I run in tandem with my Windows 11 install. I still want SteamOS.

I got my older dog through MARF our local rescue. Back then MARF was a decent sized. Lots of dogs, lots of fosters, sadly their funding has diminished and they only have a handful of dogs now. It's so sad. I owe MARF so much. I wish they could have succeeded more like your cat angels did. My younger dog has been lonely since her sister died. I was thinking of getting another MARF dog, but I don't know if that's an option. They have so few now. One way or another I'll be getting a shelter or rescue dog.

MAYBE TSMC could send the Blackwell GPU's over to INTEL to do their FOVEROS technique (which is essentially the same as CoWoS - well, it's meant to do the same thing... but of course I don't know the specifics of each process, but they are doing the same thing from what I understand) which would REALLY help out in SO MANY WAYS.... but TSMC would have to get their PRIDE OUT OF THEIR ASSHTRAY and allow this... if its even physically possible... but would that be an AMAZING MIC DROP for this timeline!!! lol

As one of the KDE devs (the desktop system SteamDeck uses, most of us are volunteers btw!), I am very excited to see GN do benchmarking on SteamOS :D Maybe when you get into it more, you could do even comparison between different distros, like Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora etc. and between different desktop environments, like KDE Plasma, GNOME, Cinnamon, XFCE... There's a whole new world to learn and study there and I would love to see it! Linux gaming has gotten so much better past few years it's insane!

I got the last B580 at my Microcenter launch day. It was a Sparkle Titan and honestly the shade of blue on is so pleasing to me I like having that almost as much as the increased performance lol. It was $270 so I am happy to have gotten in on this. I was the only one to go get it in person according to the rep guess everyone bought online for in-store pickup

Video idea i haven't seen covered. With linux gaming systems getting more popular thanks to valves proton fixing a lot of Wines quirks (or as linux heads think, totally breaks and ruins wine) a video on the difficulty and performance of setting up and using Intel AMD and Nvidia GPUs on a few of the most popular distros could be helpful.

Would like to see a B580 in mobile laptop. It doesn't seem to need an intel CPU specific pairing. So long as it's getting fed data the B580 doesn't seem to care which cpu it's with. Would go well with an Amd 7000 or 8000 series cpu where it comes to power requirements and battery life. At least better than an mRTX4060.

China is going to lose this trade war. They can restrict rare minerals but for instance Gallium isn't strictly necessary for end products. A crystal can be doped with other elements to achieve the same purpose. TSMC should move their whole operation away from Formosa. Just to stay out of reach from the PRC.

I've been wondering if microsoft has been secretly trying to keep valve from releasing steamOS. I sincerely hope steamOS becomes a viable alternative to windows for general computing, hopefully forcing microsoft to remove their head from their ass and actually put effort into windows.

Does it matter if Blackwell is made in Arizona Not like much labor in the US will get jobs out of it since it will likely be even more automated than Taiwan as Jensen would whine about how much they cost. In the meantime he will buy another fancy leather jacket
