Sponsor: DeepCool Assassin IV CPU Cooler on Amazon - https://geni.us/a0Zx Silverstone often has some of the most unique and mechanically advanced cases at Computex, and for #computex 2024, we most liked the Alta D1 for its modularity and ability to swap components all around the case with a simple rails system. Silverstone also had some new budget PC cases, like a $60 Fara 515X and $100 Fara 514X airflow case.

I do miss 5.25 support in cases, even though I understand people don't use it anymore with everything cloud, streaming, etc.
Still, it seems the 5.25 should come back because there're those news about newer more data dense optical media in newer drives.
At least in workstation cases that should be considered as people still might use old optical drives. But, if the news get confirmed, they should roll out some newer options for at least mid range cases.
The modularity in cases and GPU support solutions are the way forward with all those different sizes of parts, cooling solutions, accessories, etc. Making standardized modular parts throughout different sizes and market cases would be more logical.
Considering unorthodox part designs choices to mix and match different looks from SFF, standard mid, full, aquarium, etc., but moving things around should be considered. Remember when all PSUs were mounted in the top back part horizontally No need to be boring and do the same stuff over and over if you apply common subassemblies and modularity.
I also miss 3.5 mounting options in mid range cases, since using fixed HDD drives are still a reliable long term option sufficient for most data, including for more constant programmed backup from the pesky SSDs that might fail.

What I would love to see i the case industry is a re-visitation of flat-laid cases people could place their monitor on. Anybody can beat Lian Li to the punch on this; have the GPU mounted to one side, board mounted off-set to one side and have fans exhaust out the sidem or if blocked off by other things and used for passive radiation of heat have a rear fan make air exit out the back.
It might not be the best thermal performer, but it would certainly enable people to place their desktop, on _top_ of their desk with the monitor standing on the top side. From an engineering perspective this would be beneficial for heavier GPUs, especially since we have five-slot full-height air-cooled units coming.
Another trade-off for such a Legacy design is since the monitor is on top of the computer, concessions have to be made with either thicker glass, or no glass at all and it would not make the best of an investment in RGB fans, Which, is alright because the biggest RGB thing I use is my monitor I'm certainly not staring at my case longingly all day as I use lights to dynamically theme it, when there's this gigantic light panel showing me what I'm doing on my computer.

One MAJOR suggestion.
With these HUMONGOUS cases, can we see HANDLES someplace>
Look at the old Thermaltake Core X9. Big case, lots of space, I've owned TWO.
The main problem is NOT that they're HEAVY (though they are). They're UNGAINLY to transport.
And there's no easy way to simply pick it up and carry.
I wound up having to remove the leg standoffs and replace them with CASTERS. Which is okay-ish when you're on a one level home and can roll it on the floor.
But if you have to carry it upstairs
It basically becomes an OSHA violation.
I finally moved my system to a Fractal Meshify2 because I could get some BIGASS case carry straps. When you simply cannot do that with a a cube case.
It'd be nice if there was a place to at least TEMPORARILY mount a set of large, durable metal handles that can aid in manipulation of the whole case when you need to move the damnable things.
And VERY pleased with the toggle for LED indicators. On my old Core X9, I wound up just slapping an automotive Start Button cover on, just to drown out the glaring blue glow (system was housed immediately adjacent to my bed for a time....

I also don't need an Alta 01, but I can think of some people who do, and Silverstone is one of two companies that I can say If there's some bullsht you need that probably should exist, and you need it, Silverstone probably makes it. Y'all can guess the other one is StarTech. I would like some of that attention to detail in an ATX casemagnetic filters, the ability to slide out the motherboard so I can build the system with cooler on the desktop and then shot it into the case The ability to just mount a rad where it's convenient and then click it into place Stuff like that is absolutely Yes Please.
I just bought a Silverstone casethe SC382, it's a mATX NAS enclosure. Aside from one of the backpane boards needing replacement (I need to contact the company about that sigh), it's a solid case and I very much recommend it. I expect the CS experience will be better than ASUS at least.

I am watching those new PC cases for days and saw that most of them are small cases for micro ATX etc. People who are into micro ATX must be new PC users who does not open their PC for cleaning or upgrade parts. Clearly they don't know how painful to disassemble whole PC and do a dust cleaning, thermal paste maintenance and re-cable management with small PC cases. It is recommended to do a cleaning at least once a year; especially before the summer because of high temp problems. There were times I did not opened and cleaned my PC over 2 years which is really bad for your hardware health. Tho it shouldn't be a problem if you are rich enough to dump whole PC to second hand market and buy all new parts every 2 years. I like Silverstone NAS type cases, simple, functional but damn so much expensive; it may even be more expensive than my whole PC setup. I don't see myself buying one.

Shorter front to rear ATX case IF it can fit a 360mm rad in front makes sense for beginner liquid cooling in terms of difficulty and cost, including performance. Midrange GPU on a water block won't need the length, and you can get away with a 360mm sincee 3D V-cache chips tend to rely less on clock speed for nearly all games, while going ATX and single 360 makes for a simpler loop and more storage options (more m.2 without any of them being on the back of the board; some drive bays might still be available even with a pumpres and radiator) vs going custom liquid cooling on mITX.
Not to mention Fractal seems to be having supply issues every now and then so Silverstone might only be up against Phanteks.

I got to be honest about something. The first case that I personally purchased was a cool master Striker full tower. I still have it, and the main reason why I love that case is because of its carry handle. I would love something that is as wide as that case, but a bit shorter in height. Be honest with you none of these cases today surprises me or gets me excited for a case design. I know it's hard to reinvent the wheel x amount of times but I feel like we're not really moving in the direction to...idk where I'm going with this lolz... I just like a lot of things from the cool master case that I bought a long time ago and would love to see things re-implemented from that case.

I just bought 2 Silverstone RM42-502 rackmount server chassis. I plan to put my PCs in them for a cleaner build instead of having them just sitting on the floor. They support a 240mm radiator. So the thermals should be ok for the CPU. It'll be interesting to see how the GPU copes. You should definitely get some of their cases in and do some noise and thermal tests. Especially the rackmount cases given they market them for industrial and home use. They only come with 1 front fan and 1 rear fan in spite of supporting 2 fans in both front and rear. The rails for rack mounting are also sold separately. But it does come with feet.

I typically equate Silverstone with being a bit expensive but It's one of the few booths I would still watch tours of these days.
I like the look of that 515x as far as bright white cases and I like having smaller options for mid towers though I wouldn't definitively say I might be interested in one if it were to come to the US. If it's really around the $60 dollar mark it would be interesting. I'm honestly probably going to have to retire my much loved HAF XB EVO LAN box some time after my 4090 gets moved out of my main PC just due to GPU length also.

Yesss! Thanks for covering Silverstone! They are nailing it for DIY Homelabbers! I'm constantly checking out everything from Silverstone, even their niche products and I'm like...I don't need it...I don't need it.....oh man I want it....I've already got piles of stuff. I'm so tempting to get the Altra D1. Only did I wish you showed is their new PCIe cards, one is a NAS focused one with 3 x M.2 drives and a NIC in it. They always make something niche but cool.

Flimsy and finickey, sadly: There's no denying Silverstone is more innovative and caters to some more niche use cases, which is incredibly valuable for these customers. However, the build quality just is not on par with the competition (fractal, be quiet, even CM). There's thin metal plates, there's play on many parts, the flimsy dustfilter, cheap plastics (even for the CS 382 drive trays) etc. Which makes it a difficult buy.

That $60 515X case is the sort of case I would probably buy next... If I could a new case at all! Basically, I've got enough big cases, and since my next machine doesn't need space for hard drives that shorter front-to-back dimension is great for my needs (I'm using a GTX 1660 right now, and won't be buying any card longer than 28cm any time this side of retirement, which is at least a decade away.)

The Alta D1 looks potentially interesting. It reminds me a lot of the ThermalTake P100 chassis from years ago, but more limited. The P100 was also relatively sensibly priced. The Silverstone I need a large case, but I haven't seen anything really interesting in years. The Alta F2 looked far more interesting, potentially, but the price is simply ridiculous for what it is.

Silverstone has some awesome and overlooked case designs. I have had a couple of their cases and used their Raven RV03 for almost 10 years. The case rotated the board 90 degrees so the GPU and IO mounted to the top of the case and hung the GPU vertically. I still think that is the best configuration, never had thermal issues even with multiple GPUs in the case.

Love the Fara series, pretty cheap but relatively sturdy (for the price). I've done dozens of build in it (either the B1 or the R1). Those new ones, while not revolutionary, are a welcome design refesh
Was hoping to see new version of their Permafrost and Icegem AiO cause they really showed their limits with new gen hardware

Boring. I am so bored of huge cases. I just swapped to SFF (Lian Li A4-H2O) and I am loving it. SFF is the way to go. We don't need full ATX motherboards and huge cases anymore. Barely anyone uses PCIe expansion cards. You can fit 4080 and even 4090 into SFF cases these days. Fish tank, dual chamber, windows are all old news.

Had my little Silverstone HTPC case in the HiFi rack for ages. Its last configuration was based on AM1, had a BluRay/HD-DVD combo drive, and three 2.5 SSDs Still fond memories for the excellent service it provided over the years.
Given that I am in Asia, the short tower would be an option for the upcoming Ruzen 9xxx build, hm...

That CS383 NAS case with up to 12 hot swap bays looks pretty interesting, assuming you can get that extra cage as an accessory (which has been problematic with Silverstone accessories in the EU in the past) or it's just included with the case. That 5.25 slot would be perfect for one of those 4x 2.5 hot-swap cages for some SSDs.

Silverstone cases are pretty great. I have a pair of white RL06s and a black GD09B (HTPC). The old RL06 is a little tight to build in, but boy does it cool. The Fara line is very RL06-like but seems from this video to be more build friendly. The GD09B is a 4U case with an external DVD bay if you need one.

i have started to miss the old desktop style you know you put the monitor on top...yes im old...it actually saved space and perfect for a home server...components keep getting larger so that is a problem for that, huge coolers, huge gfx cards, only disks got smaller with ssd...even power supplies are massive
