HW News - Steam Deck OLED Issues, NVIDIA RTX 5880, AMD Drivers, & Crazy ROG Ally Mods

In this episode, we were on location for a secret, not-yet-released video (guess where in the comments!) and decided to set up and film HW News. The news last week included a follow-up to the alleged NVIDIA RTX 4090 Dragon (and other cards) with the US Government telling NVIDIA, basically, to 'deal with it.' We also cover the Steam Deck OLED's problem with a noisy headphone jack, which we were able to successfully recreate on some devices when plugged in. There's some additional talk about a community fix to the noisy Steam Deck OLED headphone jack. We also cover ASUS Ally mods that are getting wild, the RTX 5880's existence, and AMD's RDNA 3 idle power draw fixes.

My 7900xtx is still idling at around 50 watts with the newest update. That's been pretty much consistent since I got it near launch. There have been a couple of times it dipped down to 20 watts, I think after updating drivers one of the previous times it was fixed, but it didn't last. It would be back up to 50 again after a reboot or running a game or something. I have not been able to figure out the exact conditions that resulted in good idle power draw or reproduce it.
EDIT: A little further investigation reveals that it's the adrenaline metrics tab itself causing the high power draw. Tipped off by the tuning tab reporting lower after a second or two, and then confirmed using GPU-Z and CPU-ID HWmonitor (couldn't find power reporting in HWinfo64) showing 10-25w idle and then increasing to match what adrenaline was reporting when I opened the metrics tab. What a self-own. I weep for the nvidia competitor that COULD be if AMD just gave a shit.

Yes Nvidia would rather kill off their low end GPU line, and limit production in the desktop GPU market so they can keep their profits high and not have to worry about discounting products which they HATE doing minus the 20 - 40 off a 700 GPU around Black Friday.
AMD is a company and they have to make a profit, but people who say AMD is like Intel or Nvidia are full of crap, AMD will discount products over time and some pretty steeply. Their entire Zen 3 and RDNA 2 line of products have been at historic low pricing for the level of performance the different skus have. Eventually Zen 4 and RDNA 3 will have good discounts but I think the price for TSMC N5 has to come down a little to AMD before they can give the bigger discounts.

I don't really get why Nvidia and Jensen are so bent out of shape with this. Every big industry in the US requires palm grease expenses. Its not like the US government isn't utterly corrupt, like with Pharma and the FDA, or the energy sector and the EPA, or Wall Street and the SEC. If they make these big blustery statements like that directed toward a single company, it just means daddy isn't happy with his cut. Every day the tech industry in the US shocks me with its naivety towards the nature of the federal government. They keep running head first into walls and seemingly learn nothing from the experience.

1:24 Frankly, for a company that's literally protected by US taxpayers and our defensive structures to try to subvert our national security to turn a profit, it's is Truly Appalling and worthy of censure.
Like, I know people who died for this country, who were themselves first generation immigrants.
Technology aside, Xi Jinping has stated a willingness to use Military Force against Taiwan, where NVIDIA's preferred Fab resides. It has backed this statement up with the fastest military buildup since the Germans before WW2. Assisting them in any of that would be counterproductive, to say the least.

2:12 It is really very endlessly frustrating to me that Commerce would get mad at a company because it complied with their regulations. Like, if they wanted Nvidia to respond differently, they should have passed different rules, why is this hard. Did they seriously expect Nvidia to just go oh okay boss and entirely stop selling high-powered GPUs in China if Commerce didn't require them to? OF COURSE Nvidia were going to do their best to maximize revenue while following the letter of the law. And that's what Commerce should WANT them to do.

Any battery mod that involves folding should be viewed with extreme skepticism, even if it doesn't light up when you're assembling the device there's a substantial risk of winding up in a DIY Note 7 scenario and having it ignite some time down the line. A much, much safer way of doing this would be to buy a replacement Ally battery and wire it in parallel, there's still a risk of fire during assembly but if properly packaged in a modified case it would be fairly safe once assembled, and would yield very close to the same end capacity.

The funny thing with the new amd 23.12.1 driver is i have an msi 144hz monitor that the driver makers go crazy at anything above 120hz and blurs out the lower 3rd of my second screen wich is actually my primary screen but i use it only for displaying video and game footage, and everything else is on my 2nd monitor wich is hdmi port 60hz refresh rate when it ran fine before this driver release for months but now im having to turn down my monitor that i bought just because it ran at 143.98hz,

I'm a big audio lover and I've been a diehard KZ IEM lover for years, if anyone is looking for a really good pair of wired IEM's I'd highly recommend KZ, also if you want to make them wireless KZ makes a few models of IEM to bluetooth earhook adapters(AZ09 up to AZ20) that range from around 20- 100 and they're the best bluetooth earbud set I've ever heard, plus it's only 30 for an entry level set!
Also as always thank you so much to the GN team and Steve for the fantastic work!!!

As a European, i confirm that Euros are metric for dollars. 100 cents is 1 Euro. We are also using umits as a million Euros or thousand Euros that are equivalent to boatload of dollars or a grand . I feel like mentioning the least used billion Euros that is equal to bazillion dollars . Euros are of the same value across the EU, and there is no need to mention anything else than their name as the confusing freedom dollars that are different than Canadian or Australian dollars

The government: Don't sell China GPUs with more than this compute power.
GPU companies: Sells China GPUs just below that limit
The government: What are you doing? Weren't we clear?
Honestly, if the US wants to ban exports to China, then ban them. The behavior of US officials is just unnaceptable, the mafia-like authoritarian attitude is honestly embarassing and should be pushed against in a country that is supposed to be built around the idea of rule of law.

Okay, I have to give credit to Thermaltake for those fans in the sponsor read. Forget the cosmetics, these are serviceable fans. Immensely valuable with the high purchase price of modern PC fans.
You can easily relubricate the bearings, which will very significantly extend their service life. You can also easily replace the hubs when the shaft does wear down, either through long service life or should you neglect this. Now I actually want a set.

Can confirm my idle power has NOT been fixed with the latest drivers, but I swore it was fixed before... AMD moment
Also found a lovely new GPU BREAKING BUG where my games stutter if I have 2 monitors plugged into my GPU...... how is this still a thing? Beats me man but im going to be using my iGPU for my second monitor until NVIDIA releases an equivalent to the 7900xtx. I will then go back to team green and never come back to team red for GPUs.

Valve needs to get their shit together. I RMA'ed my original Limited Edition OLED for dead pixels and got one back with not only MORE dead pixels, but the sticky B button issue that they claimed to have fixed shortly after the LCD model launched. On top of that, the audio buzzing is extremely noticeable. I love these devices but man, Valve really needs to get it together. I'm just returning my LE at this point and I'll wait it out.
reply

if possible, do you think you could try and get in touch with Valve about future regional availability for the Steam Deck? i haven't seen anyone covering the Deck who's asked about this or even mentioned it, and its a shame considering the system isn't available for a lot of the rest of the world. Valve promised it'd be available in Australia and there's still no news on that at all, and its been years.

I am noticing that the speakers on my OLED deck sound considerably worse and quieter than on my LCD deck. I hope you guys look into that for the review as well because the announcement claims the opposite.
Also, my OLED screen has noticeable black smearing, where black objects leave a purple trail when they move around the screen in dark areas of games. Hope to see if yours shows the same.

As one of the people who contacted you about the 3.5mm noise on the Deck, thank you for taking it seriously and calling it out. It ruined my experience with the Deck to the point of refunding it. Since even now Valve doesn't actually own up to more than saying send it in , you have to wonder until when they will continue to ship out units with this already widely-known defect.

I wonder how long it'll be before Nvidia is busted, since Moore's Law Is Dead pointed out a lot of these huge AI Purchases seem to be going to shacks in the middle of nowhere run by shell companies and huge amounts are being sent to places like Hong Kong and Taiwan where video has been released of the cards being stripped for turning into AI cards to sell in China.

I didn't test the headphone jack of my SD OLED yet, but now I did with my kinda high end IEMs and the noise floor is pretty damn high. I might try some tinkering with the board to see if it helps. Would be great if you could do some testing too, since you have way more knowledge in that field to find the root cause and potential fixes and their possible downsides.

I can't help but have a little fun with the Steam Deck audio jack noise issue. Valve may not have stated the cause of the static although may have a fix for this problem (hopefully)? However, they have recently been requesting Steam Deck owners to stop huffing exhaust air coming from the unit. This may explain their recent patent application for a 3.5mm snot flap.

I have the 3.5 mm audio jack issue with my iems. I decided to send back my SD Oled and get a refund. This is a fantastic machine but playing with it a few days i decided that it wasn't for me anyway.
But I gotta say it's disapointing having this kind of hardware issue, my iems don't produce noise when connected to my launch nintendo switch for example.
