MSI Listened to Us: RX 5700 XT Evoke Thermal Pad New vs. Old Test

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
MSI has revised its 5700 XT Evoke OC video card following our earlier criticisms of its thermal pads, having confirmed our findings and working to improve the design. Sponsor: Gigabyte Z390 Master Motherboard - Amazon) We're revisiting the MSI RX 5700 XT Evoke OC to test the new thermal pads vs. the old design, looking for improvement to GDDR6 memory temperatures. MSI's original take on the 5700 XT GPU had it running the hottest GDDR6 memory thermals outside of the RX 5700 XT reference card, running dangerously close to over-temperature / overheating protections and GDDR6 TjMax. The MSI RX 5700 XT Evoke OC original production run can now go back for re-application of new thermal pads, for owners of the existing cards. Find our round-up of the best RX 5700 XT cards here: Gigabyte RX 5700 XT Gaming OC (Amazon): Sapphire Pulse (Amazon): Sapphire RX 5700 XT Nitro+ (Amazon): Powercolor RX 5700 XT Red Devil (Amazon): MSI RX 5700 XT Gaming X (Amazon): ASRock RX 5700 XT Taichi X (Amazon): MSI RX 5700 XT Evoke OC (Amazon): ASUS RX 5700 XT Strix (Amazon): We have a new GN store:

4: 50 so what your saying. fixed or not. is that in 3 years when the thermal paste drys out and cracks. that i should just buy a new card? ive done 3 thermal paste re-dos on my MSI lightning 6970. and each time the temps drop by 20c fans go from LOUD (and crashing out of a few demanding games. to quieter than my case fans, and can play said game with no issues well. no issues. besides low FPS from still running a damn 6970 in 2019 (almost 2020) but on my 6970. its like 10 screws. and its open then i just tighten them down till they stop turning (not HE- MAN strong. but not scared to break it loose) and it works. every time how can they design a mounting system SO BAD that you need to tighten the screws in a specific order. AND! be at a specific torque? (which not that unusual. especially for my mechanic ass, where tires, engine heads and intakes, require a torque sequence to prevent warping) like. they cant use springs around the screws like noctua or my 6970? where you just tighten till it stops (aka snug. and the spring sets the torque/mounting pressure?

Idea: around the time of the 7700k and 8700k, people running older i7's we're told to just overclock them and get a better GPU instead of upgrading to the newer platform since gaming performance wouldn't be too much different. How well does this suggestion hold up today? Have games started to use more than 4 cores enough for the older 4c/8t i7's to struggle? I feel like the difference between 4 cores and 6/8 is a bit overlooked these days where everything has at least 6.

This is why constructive criticism in reviews is so important, especially if you can offer potential solutions (and data backing up the fact that your solution works) instead of just blanket it's good/bad statements that all too many reviewers stop at. admittedly, it's also important for the companies to actually listen to said criticism, but that's out of the control of the reviewer. Nice to see MSI stepping up and doing the right thing for their customers.

. so a company the size of the MSI company. didnt think that thermals would be crazy without all chip beeing cavered with the pads. That makes their Product designers. FIRED in other companies! I am not reading anyone FIRED from them. though. becasue it is really sure thta evoke was nice at sight but useless for the shoppingcart at the moment where the buying heat was on top for them. MSI please employee more serious people.

When benchmarking these 5700's etc against other cards in the charts I notice the machine you test on is the same, 8600k etc. Does this not hinder the new AMD cards since they are pci-e 4 and won't be able to run as fast as they could. Surely artificially hindering the cards in this way must skew the results massively? Kind of like running an F1 car in a Le Mans race and limiting its speed and acceleration.

That's the problem with getting information relayed from the source rather than directly from the source. Been there! Whenever required to provide an answer when I was not the resident expert, I always brought said expert with me to clarify or correct my presentation. I shouldn't be embarrassed to say 'I don't know' when the person asking the question clearly doesn't know either.

The claim on the fitment issue I suspect is that the compression of the closer thermal pads are upping the torque needed on the gpu mount holes in a non uniform way - if they are using pre-calibrated torqueing screw drivers that could lead to invalidating some of their current assembly process, or making it needlessly complex by having a different driver for the top than the bottom

Hey I know this is super late but is there a way to tell apart the old Evokes(without the backplate thermal pads) and the new Evokes(with the thermal pads? I know for the RX 5700 non XT they added a GP in the title to tell them apart. but for the 5700 XT model all I can find are the ones with the V381-001R as a code and I don t know if these are the new ones or not.

MSI savings by reducing thermal pad size: 64 cents. MSI costs for air fare, salaries, reworking and retooling to rectify the inevitable overheating problem: Many thousands of The pad decision was probably made by someone with zero technical knowledge but would have looked great on the company accounts spreadsheet. until now. Well done MSI.
