Here are some basic skills that everyone should know! From using knives to cutting onions. Cameron: One thing I never see mentioned by chefs (except Alton brown, of course) is that a honing steel is just that. It hones the blade. It does not sharpen it. As you use the knife, the thin edge of the blade will bend out of shape and running it along the steel will straighten it out again. Sharpening the blade is what makes the edge thin to begin with.
Honing a blade keeps it from dulling too quickly and adds a bit more bite to your knife. But once it's actually dull, you need to take a stone to it or send the knife to a professional for sharpening.

One does not sharpen a knife with a steel, it's called stopping, and that's better done with leather. That's something I think many chefs are wrong with, and NO chefs are not automatically knife sharpening experts (just to clear those posts out. People stropping a knife on those steel strops will blunt their knife even more since they just go full on retard on the steel without knowing what they are doing. Buy a set of water stones and sharpen you knives, then strop them on leather with stropping compund: )

Gordon ties his shoes
First thing, these laces, the most robust laces, now, over, under, the trick here is to keep it all nice and tight. Now pull through, and wala, the most secure knot, a man can make

I've learned tons from you Gordon. Heard about you years ago from my son who watch the original Kitchen Nightmares. You're one of his idols. During chemo he binged your vids. Thanks!

Is it sharpening the knife or honing the edge? Because they are very different. One removes material to recreate the edge the other basically just bends the edge back into place.

If you want to keep the knife sharp, don't put it in a washing machine.
And you can also sharpen your knife on ceramics, like a ceramic mug or bowl. Grandma style.

For Pete's sake, that's a blade honing steel not a sharpening stone. All it does is realign the blade. No shavings, no sharpen. Do you even cook, bruv?

3 fingers, 1 in front, 2 behind. I used that line and method on my ex when we met. Needless to say, she was pleased with it. I'd say it was good advice.
