In South Africa we call the British one pancakes and is a staple in our house holds, especially when there is guests. The American kind is known as flapjacks and are a treat that is not served very often. The American kind is also made when it is a child-s birthday or event. Personally I like the British kind because it-s all I-ve ever known. The only difference is that in SA we put cinnamon, sugar and lemon on top.

I-m British and always have our traditional pancake on Pancake Day/Shrove Tuesday. Also have them as desserts too and my kids prefer a variety of toppings like you would with waffles, I prefer traditional sugar and lemon (not as much lemon as you used though lol) we do get American pancakes here too and they-re eaten more as breakfast food. I think traditional crepes are thinner than our British pancakes too xx

German here. Those -British- pancakes are just regular/standard pancakes that you can eat either sweet or savory, depending on whether you put sugar into the batter or not. We don't usually have them for breakfast, they're more a typical lunch and sweet ones are for dessert, for example filled with jam or Nutella. For savoury, I like cooked ham as a filling but there are lots of varieties.

ooh i make the British version all the time ( i think mine are the most British as whenever i make it i make it in Britain -) here are some toppings i like to use; icing sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon sugar, maple syrup, golden syrup, lemon juice (freshly squeezed is the best), and occasionally jam but my fave combo is icing sugar and lemon juice or lemon juice with cinnamon sugar: )

Hello
I-ve never seen anyone make -british- pancakes (we just call them pancakes) with butter, we don-t use it lol. Irl we make pancakes ALL the time, such a classic! I swear I came up with lemon and sugar as a topping, but apparently everyone-s been doing it this entire time ---your pancakes came out beautifully. Well done! Well, I guess I should-ve expected perfection from you lol.

For anyone out there, I make English pancakes using only flour eggs an milk and cook them in a frying pan, we never make them in saucepan, and always put the lemon juice before the sugar making it dissolve. then you have a sour and sweet liquid on your pancakes and don't have to deal with the crunchy sugar if you don't like it that way.

Dude
For me the american pancake is thick and sweet. Like a desert. European pancakes have little to no sugar in them and can be eaten with sugar+cinnamon, jam, nutella or with something savory like cheese, fish, spinach etc. I would eat american pancakes when I crave some sugary rubbish and real pancakes when I'm hungry.

Usually so that the suger doesn't absorb too much lemon juice, most British people put the lemon juice first and sugar on top. As you said probably a bit too much lemon. If the lemon and sugar wasn't your thing try a thin layer of Nutella with some fresh fruit --
