Hey guys this one is a little different this week: if anyone has ever been out drinking in Chicago, you know about the tamale guy. You're never positive when he's going to show up at your bar with his little cooler of hot, fresh tamales, but he always seems to know when you need him the most. This episode is about going out one night and trying to track him down. Next week will be the last episode for Dining on a Dime: Chicago so please tune in! As always, thanks so much to everyone for watching and for your comments.

My roommate and I were at the Ale House in Old Town after watching a friend's showcase at Second City. We were bemoaning the fact that the Chipotle across the street closes at 10 (seriously, a late night Chipotle would kill. We stumbled out of the bar around 1: 30, hungry like the wolf, as the tamale guy was getting out of his car. We bought five bags that got passed around to friends and strangers alike. It was this perfect moment of Chicago kismet that endeared the city to me forever.

As far back as 8 + years ago he used to visit the bars on Western between Diversey and Chicago Ave almost like clockwork. It got to the point where if he didn't show up, you weren't sure what your drunk food plan was. He had a following on twitter at one point where people would point out his location any given night, but I haven't monitored it for years. Good memories drinking tall boys of Becks and taking down 5 counts of tamales with friends.

I never had a good authentic Tamale in Chi-town (I love Tom-Tom. but not authentic. The first time I ever met a 'Tamale Guy', was in Texas. South Padre. 20 something years ago. they were also in a cooler. they were also cheap. they were the best tamales I ever had. They went better with Beer than What-a-Burger did.

Man it makes me feel slightly uncomfortable when the tamale guy is talked about like he is actually one singular man as if no one can tell one tamale guy from the next. There are multiple tamale men. This Bucktown tamale guy is definitely not the Lakeview tamale guy I ran into a few weeks ago.

We used to have a similar guy here in Shropshire in England but he went pub to pub selling mussels, cockles, whelks and other seafood. When you are 5 or 6 pints in to a night there is nothing better! Though I could be converted if we had a tamale guy!

those must have been some really good tamales, since it's spreading via word of mouth, or in this case, via social media. and keeping the notoriety makes it even more desirable. that's some good marketing strategy, whether he planned it or not.

My friends owned a bar in the Ukrainian Village a couple years ago. Tamale Guy would stop in right before last call on any random night, and the place would erupt in applause when he showed up, because everyone was a) drunk, and b) starving.

You wouldn't happen to still be filming episodes for this series? Next time youre dinning on a dime in Chicago I Humbly recommend you check out the endangered Midwestern Italian dish, the breaded steak sandwich, at Riccobene's
