Twix. Theyve been at the heart of a debate that goes back more than five decades. Lines have been drawn so intractable that friendships, relationships, even nations have been ruined. Who could forget the Great Twix Battle between the UK and Finland in 1984? No, were not speaking of the Left vs. Right debate. Were talking about the Conflict of Classification that rages to this day. The age old debate: is Twix candy or cookie? Out of respect for those who came before, we will not take a position. Instead, join Claire Saffitz in the Bon Apptit Test Kitchen as she attempts to make a gourmet version of Twix that can hopefully bring peace to this conflict. Check out Claire's Instagram

It is made into a slab and then sliced. It's sliced while its still hot and not completely solid. The chocolate is rolled on with a giant scroll. I work at M&M Mars in their Tennessee manufacturing facility. We make Twix and all varieties of M&M's. After the Twix centers(we love eating them without the chocolate, it's like the most amazing cookie with a perfect caramel topping) are chopped and rolled with chocolate, they are rapidly cooled on a 300 foot long, fully enclosed conveyor system. There are 4 people, two on the left and two on the right, who's job all night and day is to make sure the Twix is perfectly shaped, sized and looks correct on every single Twix bar. We scrap an average of 1 ton of Twix bars every day because they aren't perfect. After the conveyor they are sent to packaging where they are once again checked by human eyes before the bag is sealed and the candies are boxed. And for the record keepers, we are essentially sterilized before we can step into the manufacturing area. Since chocolate and soft candies absorb all nearby smells, we are under extremely strict guidelines. We can not wear any type of perfume or body spray. Fingernails can not be painted and all hair must be completely covered. Our clothes never leave the facility and are washed with non-scented soaps. We are not allowed to chew gum or eat breath mints. If somebody shows up smelly, they are told to either shower then and there or go home. There is no smoking or chewing on the property and if you smell like smoke or tobacco you can not enter.

Claire being confused on the whole righty tighty left loosey thing was me for the exact same reasons, but fear not All is not lost If the circle was a wheel, the direction you would turn it to make it roll right is righty tighty (clockwise) and the direction to make the wheel roll to the left is lefty loosey (counterclockwise. Youre not alone in your confusion Claire

I'm allergic to dairy so I've never had a twix but like. I thought I at least knew what they LOOKED like. did not know they had a little cookie thing in them but according to my significant other that's how they've always been. I thought it was just caramel and maybe a little nougat or peanut but turns out, not all tiny halloween chocolate bars are the same. that's crazy

Me: Twix has a superb marketing team but, at the end of the day, the left and right Twix consist of the same materials and exhibit no differences warranting the rivalry. It is nothing more than a ploy to divide the consumers and keep interest high in the cookie. Subjectively, you are only paying for the wrapper you like more. Also me: only buy the left ones.

6: 46 Wait. Is reading the ingredients NOT Claire's favorite part? The world is currently feeling really flat. or hyperbolically-paraboloid. Claire, you have to tell us, Is reading the ingredients your favorite part for real? If you're being held under duress, set one parchment paper divider on fire to show us.

So Claire, the way figured out to understand righty tighty lefty loosey is thinking about the thing like the steering wheel of a car. If that thing was the steering wheel, which way do you turn it to go right and which way do you turn it to go left. If you happen to see this I hope it helps

This is the first time I've seen someone not get the righty-tighty lefty-loosey thing like I don't. And now I realized why. It's because of the clockwise and counterclockwise that we're taught. I always think, if you turn it right you're going left which is why it's so confusing to me.

I don't know, if you've addressed this or not, it at around 20: 20 your nails are blue, that could be poor circlation, or other illnessess. Edit: or maybe it's cold in there, or the lighting, or a mixture of both, who knows. Just thought Id say something.

I have the same problem with righty tighty and lefty loosey too. Instead I kind of cup my right hand, stick out the thumb, and whatever direction the thumb is pointing when you rotate your hand is where the force is going
