Grumpy, Un-adoptable Cat Is Her New Mom's Shadow Cat Crazy This reminds me so much of my own cat, Sassy. She belonged to my husbands grandmother, but she didnt do anything for this cat besides feed her & give her a place to sleep. When his grandmother passed away, nobody would take Sassy besides us, because she was so old, skittish & mean- but we couldnt bear to send her to the pound, which at the time was our only other option. She spent the first 6 months hiding under the bed, hissing & swatting at our ankles. Then one night I woke up because something was messing w/ my hand- she was head-butting it & gently nibbling my fingers, but as soon as I woke up fully, she was right back under the bed. It took a couple more months from there, but now she is my BFF & partner in crime. Weve had her for 6yrs, now- shes over 20 & is starting to slow down with age, but she still enjoys snoozing in the sun & sleeping on my back at night. I love her so much- shes such an amazing cat & has brought so much joy to our lives.

. And I decided at that point to stop trying. Bingo! This woman figured it out. This is exactly the right approach. Unless a cat just happens to have an extroverted personality right from the get-go this is often the approach that is needed. Cats need to feel like they are in control of the situation. I often see people focusing too much attention on a cat when they meet it for the first time and it tends to freak them out. They need to get to know you first. The relationship has to happen on their terms and they will let you know when they are ready.
I work in a service industry that takes me into people's homes on a regular basis and I often surprise customers by how quickly I'm able to win their pets over. Even when they are animals who don't usually like new people. My approach is really very simple. I just ignore them until they come to me. Although I think there's definitely something to the idea that they can just tell when someone is an animal person.

You have learned what most cat owners never learn. Let the cat come to you. I care for a colony of 12 feral cats. Some of them are friendly, some of them are terrified of me. (I think it is all genetic) But, you cannot force yourself on a cat. It is all on their terms. Don't let your feelings get hurt and try to convince the cat to love you. Back off, be nice, feed them, etc. But, don't go after them. Let them set the timetable. Cats are very physical loving animals. They need to be in a family, they need to be touched and reassured of their belonging in the clan. Plus, I think shelters are too quick to label cats unadoptable. They don't have the time to really evaluate them properly.

Long ago we had a cat that came to us for help. We were out of town when my daughter called & said there is a kitten here. So, I told her to bring her in, put her in the extra bedroom with a litter box & food. The vet said she was about 2 years old. He gave her maybe 2-3 yrs to live as her vital organs were getting ready to shut down. Grumpy girl! For the rest of her life which was actually 8 years later. But she settled in with the dogs & the other 4 cats. She got so she wouldn't swat at us as much lol.

I’d adopted a grumpy distant scary cat called HIHI (the sound she makes when she is angry,
Specially with my other two cats.
It’s been two months and still can’t hold her, kiss her maybe she will never want to be cuddle, kissed and that’s okay, is her personality and I love her just the way she is. All
Kitties are different, that’s fun too.

Yeah its one thing if a cat is attacking when youre coming up to it. But if a cat were actively trying to attack me I would punch its face inside out. We dont play that mess around here chief

I wish more ppl would be more patient with shelter animals, and not give up on them so quickly if they don't mesh immed. This woman is a wonderful example of how ppl should be.

Sarah, you are meant to be her mama. Grumpy Barbara is meant to be your sweet and cute fur baby girl. She’s thriving with you. You’re doing great.

Hhhmmm. What made you think those flimsy fake-leather gloves are going to stop those fangs from nicking your skin (I found out the hard way, too)

If all people that want a cat will remember this simple fact then everything will work out fine.
You do not own a cat. IT OWNS YOU!
