Why French games have always been way ahead of their time

France is the second-biggest producer of video games in the world. Franchises like Assassin-s Creed, Dishonored, Life is Strange, and - whatever the hell David Cage is doing, come from French-based companies. So France has had a huge influence on gaming, globally. But what you might not know is how weird and counter-cultural some of France-s early games are! In the 1980s, French game developers were going wild, making games that would fit right in on itch. io today

It's really sad to know that -capitalism doing its thing-,
Creating monopolies, that is,
Absolutely dismantled ANY creative possibility for modern games.
Big companies, like EA, Ubisoft, or whatever, much more prefer the comfort of -certain profit-, than employing new -creative disruption- that could result in loss.
We should support more the indie developers, and ask for more governmental aid for creative, groundbreaking experiences.
Man, there are so many stories to be told.
As a Brazilian, I would love to see our folklore in a game format, something that sadly, might never ever happen, considering the VERY few devs we have, usually have to cater to a more -broad- (International (USA) audience.
And we have 0 government support, or incentive, or cultural fomenting for such.

I reccomand wakfu which actually is a game adoption, and great(watch otiginal subbed its better) it has like a race thats super capitalist it even has a soccer good variety sport and the puns, even one that has a artist trapped in contracts. And the villains especially season 1 oh boi is.
And other french anime too, french developed their own style o sometimes very absurdist like dragon hunters anime.
Ther is french cartoons too. Ther are french manga too. Dreamland is good. Among others.

It's so strange to watch an American-based video discussing France with earnest praise, without defensiveness, derision or even the slightest hint of jingoism. I'm really glad to see newer American generations changing what was universally expected of them before. Also, no one -in the comments- debased themselves with the almost ubiquitous rhetoric of American nationalism. Great work everyone! This makes me feel very optimistic!

Simone, how dare you make me remember france exists without doing me the mercy of even mentioning France's greatest gift to the RPG genre: OFF.
Jk, but how did Simone do all this research into French games without encountering OFF? It's the one game I knew was French before watching this video, and easily one of the best games I've ever played.

This -Weird- idea is totally a US sub-culture globish way of seeing things. When US people do not know about other cultures, they say -it's weird-. As the US way of seeing things tends to globalize. The right words would have been: original, creative, avant-garde, smart games, mind games, cultural games or artistic games.

Great video, as a French game designer myself I had not heard of many of those indie titles! Surprised to see no mention of one of the most groundbreaking games ever: l'Arche du Capitaine Blood (1988.

Ahhh this just reminded me of the Existence of -Woodruff et le Schnibble d'Azimuth- which my family got as an extra with an educational game expecting nothing and turning out to be an amazing game!

So this whole video was about 80s French games that were woke, ignoring any games released in the 90s, 2000s, etcetera. I didn't even hear my favorite gone Lyon renegades, Etranges Libellules.

Ah, so that's why Dontnod games are so topical! I finished playing Life is strange 2 recently and was blown away by its honest portrayal of police brutality in US, racism and many other things.

French films are weird and experimental. French comics are weird and experimental. If France's video games -weren't- weird and experimental, I'd be concerned that someone had spiked their wine.

-France is known for it's food, it's painting and it's mimes- I have to say, i'm 30 years old, lived in France all my life and I never seen a single mime in my whole life X)

13: 40 Excuse me? 1983 is when Microsoft shipped its first mice, and they weren-t even the first on the market. Apple sold a mouse to go with the Lisa, that same year.

First zelda is from the 80s, i love that. I love old games as much as new ones, nice to get the feeling how a series started. Now some text based games are not my type.

man revisiting this and polygon really are the best in the business when it comes to games journalism right now. although people make games are also really far up there

I grew up playing the Gobliiins games (in their Sierra-published American localization) and it is fascinating to know more about their creator and her context.

Maybe it's that I just watched Jenna's latest Versus episode, but this is so wild it feels like a description of a parallel universe

France is also great with electonic music with artists like: Daft Punk, M83, Jean Michel Jarre or David Guetta. Or brands like Arturia.

I just remembered that I played both Gobliiins and Gobliins without a mouse. I used the keyboard to move the cursor on the screen.

0: 42 So many amazing French painters to choose from yet you choose to live up to your stereotype and show a Dutch painting.

I'm a little disappointed that Ubisoft's horrific modern history was unchallenged here, but I love the topic in general!
