Why Journey's last song was the hardest for Austin Wintory to compose

Why Journey's last song was the hardest for Austin Wintory to compose

Composing Journey's soundtrack was a Journey in itself. -wink- Composer Austin Wintory sat down with us for an interview to explain how this creative process gave us Journey-s memorable score. While the game-s first song was practically written the day Wintory was asked to join the project, the same would not be the case for the game-s last song, -Apotheosis. - Nothing would be harder for both the team and Wintory than nailing the end of this harrowing journey

Journey is literally the best game of all time. The music, the blend of gameplay and storytelling, the art direction and most importantly, the catharsis. The emotional power of this game is unmatched in video games. They say gaming can't be art, but that is absolutely not correct and Journey is a testament for that. I'll never forget myself sitting in my room, reaching the end and just being absolutely blown away. It's quite possibly the best story I've ever experienced in my life regardless of medium. Journey is the best video game of all time because it achieves something video games are not supposed to, which is make you feel something.

I remember when I played this game while I was still living at home. I played it alone in my room and knew it was something special. I moved my PS3 to the family room the next day and started another playthrough. By the end of that playthrough everyone in the house had slowly assembled, without a word exchanged telling them to sit and listen, and they watched me play until its completion.
I love this game and I've replayed it recently. I own a digital version of the OST and listen to it often.

I am so beyond honored by this, you have no idea. Clayton: no one has ever produced a look at my work on this level before and I am just speechless over how great the final result is. I could never thank you enough for all the care and detail you put in; it's insane to me that someone would go to those lengths over work I did (almost a decade ago) and so I'm just overwhelmed with gratitude today

I love that game so much, it's so beautiful I sometimes started it just to watch the sand react to the character movement. And I love the music so much I had at least one score on my standard playlist for three years. And I love Polygon, because, you know.
And now I love all these things even more

When I played Journey for the first time I was completely blown away by how beautiful it was, how everything just fit together perfectly to create this masterpiece. It felt like magic to me, like I was playing videogames for the first time in my life. It's been my favorite game ever since.

Journey is a game I've always thought would bore me because it has no dialogue and there's few people to meet online in it so many years later. But if Clayton thinks so highly of it, and the composer is this talented, maybe it's high time I gave it a shot.

Man I have not played Journey is years and just the first few notes of Nascence sent chills up my spine. And I could feel tears in the back of my throat when I listened to Apotheosis. It really is a soundtrack experience I've never run into in any other game

I don't know how to get this seen other than commenting and this was a great video but you have to know that things have been going downhill for a bit, please start listening BDG and Pat you guys have been going downhill since the mcelroys left

I can hear a lot of influence from 'Memoir of a Geisha' and 'Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon' as well as Silk Road ensembles 'Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon'. These are my absolute favorite soundtracks! However, this is really it's own creation.

What a beautiful video, I was captivated and so engaged with the sorry! Journey finale is probably my favorite video game moment of all time mostly because of the music, knowing Austin's struggle makes it even more special. Thank you!

A game that was so good about a journey going through a path. death stranding a game thats also about taking a journey. im seeing a pattern is not about the game is about the journey u take that makes a game good: D

Quite literally, listening to 10: 27 made me tear up, and I've never even played this game. That's some absolutely astonishing talent, to make someone emote to something they have zero connection to.

The first time I heard Apotheosis I was 17 and I remember thinking at the time that I wouldn't mind if that was the last song I ever hear before I die. Nine years later, I still love it just the same.

Polygon: -Journey is an orchestra following a Hero that gains so much yet in the end it all fades into deafening silence without saying a word-
Also Polygon: -AM I WALUIGI OR AM I LUIGI! -

-maybe there is something more than just wondering in the desert- how you made a simple gameplay habit into a personality trait and evaluation of someones current emotional state

This composer is the source of probably my most favorite moment of all of MAGFest ever, ever, in all my years. I speak of the live play concert that happened like 2 years ago.

I think Journey is one of the greatest games I've ever played because of it's emotional impact. Such a beautiful game and the music truly makes it amazing and touching.

This was rad, brought back all the good feelings and memories from this game, and hearing the composer's experience made it that much more valuable. THANK YOU

Never thought I-d cry while watching a Polygon video since I usually just watch BDG and Griffin-s Amiibo Corner. but just hearing that song again broke me
reply

I watched this, then went and listen to Apotheosis and had a nice 7 minute long cry and remembered how much power the Journey soundtrack wields over my heart

Is it me or does this story sound a bit different from how he mentioned the game's ending came about in Play Watch Listen? Maybe I'm forgetting the details.

1: 18 Disappointed you didn't splice in relevant footage of the Unraveled episode where BDG tries to explain Kingdom Hearts. Overjoyed by the - wink -.

I wasn't even a bit emotional throughout the whole video but when the cello hit those 2 last notes my eyes suddenly became wet out of nowhere
reply

No joke, i literally cried a lot in this video, the scenes and the music were. Something. -
All started with that bit of the cello(2: 25).

this game, visuals and mostly sound was like a beuatiful healing acid journey thru your own abstract constructs in your own mind
reply

I've never played this game or even seen clips until now. I'm gonna have to play this!
Music is what gets me the most when I play

Playing Journey for the first time is one of the few times a video game has made me cry. It was perfect in every possible way
reply

my best experience in gaming, this trancended all media and evolved in the ultimate experience that left me in tears

this is such an amazing video about a too-often overlooked part of video games. clayton is such a terrific producer, wow!

I always saw Austin as this reserved, calm, musical god. This is not the case. I love how down-to-earth this guy is.
