Resident Evil 2 is not the remake you think it is

Resident Evil 2 (2019) looks and feels amazing, but is it really a remake of the original? All these reviews seem to think the tank controls in the original resident evil games were bad. They werent. It was just a different style of gameplay. Its like saying checkers has bad controls compared to chess. You wouldnt say that anymore than you would say the controls in Zelda breath of the wild -fix the controls- from a link to the past. It makes me wonder if the people who complain about the tank controls from the original games are people who played and enjoyed them in their entirety or if theyre people who look at them like curiosities from another era, relics to be tried out for a few minutes before moving on to something else.\r\n

I got to be honest I like the original and I played the original and already Beat It took a couple tries I'm not playing this again I'm putting it to bed. With The Walking Dead and Dawn of the Dead I'm putting this straight to bed. Too much zombies for me! Maybe instead you guys should did the remake of Dino Crisis or Silent Hill the original one yeah change the ending a little bit. Or kept it Resident Evil 2 but change the background stories it may be different characters and different parts of the town. I've played it enough and got my fill of it

This remake feels far more generic. Like it's taking the plot, characters and setting of the original game, which was already kind of genre cliche at the time, and then integrating it with gameplay systems and mechanics which are identical in 90% of AAA action games from the last two console generations. Making it a shooter is a mistake, I feel. The only thing that makes this eye catching is that the graphics and tone feel fresh at this exact point in time. The game in itself is pretty much the same as Dead Space.

Even if the point this video was trying to make is correct and make sense (it doesn't, it is stating the obvious and pointless. The remake of a 20 year old game has new modern conveniences and different features/perspectives! Who would have thought. It's not like anyone who saw 2 seconds of gameplay couldn't figure that out.
And the point about Zelda sequels not being considered remakes? I cannot even begin to think how you thought that point would make any sense.

You don't really reboot a single entry in a series, you reboot an entire series. A remake would be the proper term here still. The specific similarities you're looking for in the remake really make it sound like you would have been a lot happier with a remaster. That doesn't make this less of a remake though.
Also, regarding your Zelda comment, the plot/stories aren't as identical as you make it sound, not when you compare it to RE2 and it's original.

I think I'd prefer the tank controls, tone, and atmosphere to the -fix. -
I don't know, somehow the idea of exiting a police precinct by rotating dials on a statue, after matching the ancient keys found strewn about the building to their jewel-embossed, playing-card shaped, door-knobs -- as the means of opening the precinct's parking garage. Is less an intrusion on reality when the game is a proper horror-piece, and not a generic zombie-shooter.

-Well, actually. I think you're confusing remake with remaster. - [-Cheetoh bag ruffles-]
Jeebus H. Crapdancing Christ these comments about Remake v. Remaster (2019) need to chill. You're just arguing semantics for the sake of arguing and condescension.
The context and intent of the video are still understandable and interesting in a discussion about game design differences.
Thank you, Jenna, I enjoyed your video.

The developers have confirmed more than once that it is not REMAKE, they even decided to remove the word REMAKE from the title, unlike the clickbait of the version shown by CAPCOM in 2015 that did have it. -
CAPCOM: - With the camera on the shoulder, we're building a new game, this is not a REMAKE of original, it's a full new game, we really want to push! -

reply

Oh thanks! I totally didn't know all this already! These are all things that were impossible to tell from the trailers and demo and innumerable playthroughs!
Please Polygon, this video could have been made by an 18 year old with footage from the demo four months ago. Everything you said in this video has already been said ages ago!

reply

To be frank. This video feels forced and clunky, especially when its just a remake not a remaster as everyone already pointed out, this really feels like someone wrote a script for a video and just couldn't let go of it even though it clearly wasn't working. I kinda expect better than this out of you Polygon.

I'm sorry, but that comparison to the Zelda games makes no sense.
They haven't bothered remaking the same game at all with a new look, they just port them to new systems.
This isn't a new RE game like how BotW is. This is literally a game that had already existed that has changed how it looks

reply

It -is- a remake.
They -made the game again- - -remade- it.
Zelda (I) and Zelda II were different games. They had a similar plot, but the story itself is different.
Using your logic, Jak & Daxter II isn't a sequel, it's a remake. Same characters, some plot, same mechanics.

reply

So you're telling me that this game plays differently from its predecessor? Sounds exactly like a remake to me. This person is confusing the word -remaster- with -remake-. That said, If Capcom was going to reboot the Resident Evil series I don't believe they'd start with Resident Evil 2.
reply

I hate this. I just finished REvil 1 (biohazard) on PS4, and it was amazing and just straight up remastered version of the first original resident evil.
I was so hyped for resident evil 2 and now this. If I wanted the camera on the back I would replay resident evil 4

reply

surprised how off base this video-s premise is. polygon-s smart, insightful, and funny. this video made incorrect assumptions about me, was obtuse about what a remake is, and even if it wasn-t those first two things. it was boring. hope this is just a fluke
reply

i really liked the game, the only problem i have with it is that they tell you, you have two separate campaigns to play trough, but in reality your have the exact same campaign with a few different touches here and there. other than that, good game
reply

Seriously, who let this video to be uploaded? You obviously have no idea what the difference is between a remaster and a remake. ReMAKE. It's not just an upscaled version of a game, it's a game reimagined. And that's exactly what they did with RE2.
reply

Did you know that resident evil was going to be a first person perspective but due to the lack of greater technology back then they had no choice but to make it fixed camera - so don't know why people fussing over this I'm all for change
reply

So, they say it will return to the roots, throwing everything through the window and give us another shooter-adventure? Well done, now I really hope they forget about maing a RE3 remake and focus on Revelations 3 or RE8. Luck!
reply

Its a shooter so it sacrifices exploration and ideas. yeah for modern gamers because we need dummy shooters all the time. I'm tired of that crap. Why do people think Dark Souls and Smash Bros are so popular? Not shooters?

-AcTuaLLy iT is A reMakE. YoU'rE tHInKiNg Of a rEmaSteR. - Nice, short video that gave me some cool comparison shots of the old and new game and talked about a couple of things in the new game. Thanks.

I think you guys got the terms remaster and remake mixed up because you guys just pointed out things they already advertised and the Zelda argument felt forced just to justify the video being released.
reply

The comments on this re: Remake v Remaster are so annoying -- the two terms are so nebulous and interchangeable, and it doesn't change the points that the video makes. Prescriptivism is lame, ya'll
reply

I mean, I largely agree with the point being made, but the title is a bit presumptuous tbh. I don't think anyone is going into the remake thinking it's the same experience as the original
reply

I wish they would release a resident evil 2 remaster aswell as I still lo e the tank controls and the first resident evil remaster on the PS4 looked fresh and the mansion looked eerier.
reply

Remaster or remake, the fact that it doesn't rely on fake difficulty like tank controls and fixed camera angles to be challenging and terrifying already makes it better than the original.
reply

Are all of the scares in this simply different zombie models coming up from behind to bite the right side of your neck? Because that's the impression I get from this video.
reply

never played a resident evil game, never gave much thought to it, but when you see that polygon pink thumbnail, you know it's still gonna be an interesting video: D
reply

This video answered all my questions about this game, so thanks Jenna. I now know that I will buy this (once it's on sale because I'm BROKE A. F. right now)
reply

In the original resident evil 2 there was no auto aim they decided to do that with resident evil 2 duel shock, Nintendo 64 and game cube to have auto aim.
