This video reminds of a scene in the Robert Heinlein novel The Number of the Beast in which two characters meet at an event and dance a tango. At the end of the dance, the man comments that they really should be required to get married after a dance that intimate. The woman accepts the apparent proposal and the man doesnt back down even though it was clearly a joking comment. The novel takes off from there.

Have you checked out a little independent comedy film called Tango Shalom? Its a fantastic film in which a Rabbi ( who by his faith) cannot touch another woman other than his wife. Yet he to save his synagogue, asks for the help of a dance instructor to enter a tango contest for the prize money. They develop a tango in which they do not touch each other and yet it is more tantalizing than any other on film

Id reorder the final three. To me Tango de Roxanne is THE most amazing tango scene in cinema because it is arguably one of the best filmed/edited scenes EVER of any kind in cinema. And the choreography is top notch story telling on top of be gorgeous and sensual. Cell Block would be number two - and then Take the Lead would be fine in the number 3 position.

Maybe the Chicago Tango is the best and the most incredible, but in my opinion, the most beautiful and graceful on the list is the one done by Ginger and Fred couple; and the most touching is Tangoing Blind by Al Pacino. La Cumbresita Tango listed seems to be the most authentic one, I suppose.

Banderas is as graceful as an elephant. He never actually dance tango. 2 or 3 clips contain tango. The rest us everything but it. Poor contribution u make with this compilation. This American obsession with ignoring what they can't comprehend and make it into a cartoonist rendition of art.

That tango in The scent of a woman is way above every other one in the list, not from the point of the dance techniques, but the imagination of such a scene, the unparalleled acting and how that part plays into the whole plot. Hands down movie history apogee.

Theres the REAL tango (Argentinian tango) and theres Hollywood tango (not the real thing. Most of the clips on this video are the latter, and Id never include the prison tango from Chicago. Thats Broadway; not tango.

Being a Kdrama geek, I want to make another suggestion. Scent of a Women (not a remake just borrowed the title) starring Lee Dong-wook and Kim Sun- Ah. It makes my heart flutter every time.

Love all the musical/dance numbers from Chicago, Cell Block Tango is terrific Now I will have to go find my absolute favorite number in the movie, We Both Reached For the Gun--very clever.

When I look at footage of people dancing, it doesn't matter how showy or technically brilliant it is, If they don't look like they want to end up in bed together then it leaves me flat.

On the 3rd palace the music is a mixture at first of Roxanne by the Police but the ending is an tango called Tanguera by tango great Mariano Mores as can be seen in the movies Credits!
reply

Astaire and Rogers really should be in the top five if not number one. There arent two dancers in any of these other films that were close to their skills, style, class, or connection.
reply

Where the hell was the Slaughterhouse Scene from Naked Tango? I'm appalled it didn't even get an honourable mention. Vincent D'Onofrio was amazing in it!
reply

I just wish you talked a little less- telling us things we already see in the video and dont need to be told and by talking you keep us from hearing the music.

There are two tangoes in True Lies, Arnold with the asian woman, and with Jamie Leigh Curtis. Both are as good or better than the ones you highlighted here.
reply

Amazing how many times we saw Antonio Banderas and Raul Julia! And wasnt the guy singing Roxanne the same one as the dancer in the Polish movie too?
reply

My mom didn't like Moulen Rouge, when I took her to see it, but she loved the tango. She was really amazed at the group tango in the climax of it.
reply

Zorro with Antonio Banderas was shown only in passing with no mention! And what about Strictly Ballroom, which had a ton of flamenco and tango?
reply

Wow. How on earth did you find The Tango Lesson? I have searched for years and have not found a copy. that alone marks a genuine joy. Kudos to you.
reply

Scent of a Woman and the tangos, However, Jerry Lewis, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse.
reply

How exactly did Libertango end up so far down this list? This was supposed to be a countdown to the best, not most well known or cinematic.
reply

I love Antonio Banderas in the school detention scene and Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. Oh how I would love to tango with them xx if only!
reply

Rudolf Valentino in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was amazing. Even in a silent movie his tango made you want a cold shower.
reply

Love the LiberTango - compare Pablo Veron to Colin Firth in Unlikely Partners and you find you cannot take your eyes off Veron.
reply

My three favorites, Cell Block Tango, Take the Lead with Antonio Banderas and his partner and Jennifer Lopez with Richard Gere.
reply

A good list but you missed the boat when you missed Leonard Schrader's 'Naked Tango'. In particular the knife fight tango.
reply

I wish TV could be included. Crazy Ex-Girlfriends Horny Angry Tango is a standout moment from the entire 4 season run.
reply

Mr. & Mrs Smith, Scent of a Woman, True Lies - All good movies. If there were TV shows we'd have to have Chuck!
reply

The Tango Shalom gets my honorable mention - a Tango with a Balloon to obey religious rules. Very creative!
