Jikes this is a tough one. To choose the best character is difficult. I love Violet Crawley, her sharp wit is the best. But I have this list of my own. The couples, upstairs and downstairs. Divided into those two groups. First the upstairs group: Edith & Bertie #4, Sybil & Branson #3, Cora & Robert #2 and in first place, yes you guess right, Mary and Matthew. Downstairs: Andy and Daisy at #4, Molesley and Baxter at #3, Elsie and Carson #2 and first: Anna and Bates. Now to choose the my favorite couple overall is, TaDa. Anna and Bates! Why? Although most of these couples had their trials and tribulations and came out on top, Anna and Bates just couldn't at times catch a break. Their love and devotion for each other were tested over and over again. Yes, they kept secrets from one another but it were always for the other one's best interest. And though all of that they stuck together. Bates in prison, Anna did her utmost to get him out. Anna in prison, Bates were there for her. They are my favorite couple out of all. Sorry Matthew and Mary but you have to take second place in this one.

Lady Mary should not have been on this list. I've never cared for her character at all. I dont understand why she's so liked. I tried to like her, but the list of reasons not to is so much longer than reasons to like her. And she placed higher than anyone else on this list besides Violet Crawley? Higher than Sybil? Nah, I don't think so.
So many better developed and more lovable characters than her. Tom Branson should of 100% been on here. And I'm sad Mr. Moseley and Thomas Barrow were only honorable mentions.

I think the whole of the main Downton abbey cast are the greatest characters! The all grew and evolved throughout the show and it wouldnt be the same without them! Edith deserved to be in top 5. She had so much development as a character. And she was so relatable. She struggled to settle down and to find herself. She made lots of mistakes, but tried to live her best life as she went on maturing and on changing her mentality. To be honest, she's my #2, right after Violet.

Thomas Barrow is only an honorable mention and Tom Branson isnt even on the list. I thought those two would be in the top three for sure. Personally, I think Thomas is easily the best character on the show. Hes the most complex. Also, I think Tom Brandon had some of the best development on the show.

My heart has always belonged to Matthew Crawley he is a sweet man and such a romantic not to mention exceptionally gorgeous with that warm kind smile and those striking crystal blue eyes how could you not fall in love with him Downton wasn't the same without him lighting up the building.

Mary was very egoistic and cruel, specially to Edith. In my opinion she didn't deserved that happy ending, they all forgive her just too easy.

My top 5 favourites of all time are Anna, Isobel, Matthew, Countess Violet and Tom. Barrow is also amazing for how complex and different he was. I also absolutely loved Mrs Hughes, Mrs Patmore, Edith, Mr Molesley Cora, Rose and sometimes Robert.

I like how you said Matthew is the gateway character to the audience because he was thrown into the aristocratic way of life. Arguably Branson carried that on from season 4 as he is also a fish out of water, more so than Matthew to be honest.

Violet is definitely a favourite. Mary is my least favourite as she's just a horrible woman with few redeeming qualities (a highlight of the series was Branson telling her off for her terrible behaviour for the first time in her life.

I just binge watched this series ever since I watched the movie.
My goodness, Tom Branson is a fave. His story arc was really good and he's not even in honorable mention I even expect him at least on top 3 or 4.

Why isn't Cora on the list? She's kind, beautiful, understanding, and sympathetic. She's also one of the only ones in the show that actually cares about the reputation of Downtown.
