BladeRunner 2049 was a true masterpiece, that was better than its predecessor on every aspect, except music score - which of course doesn't mean that its music wasn 't marvelous, too. It will be a new classic in the years to come, just like the first one did.
As for the rest of the movies mentioned, seems like the most common problem was that they were released at the same time with other, better reviewed ones. Anyway. Hollywood seems to be falling a victim of their own greed: Just because a very expensive production (Lord Of The Rings trilogy) was a huge success, it doesn't mean that every expensive movie will be successful, too. It has to be a good movie, too!

I wish everyone would stop paying attention to Rotten Tomato. They're audiences and critics are completely out of touch with anything resembling quality. Personally, I thought Blade Runner 2049 was a hot mess. It was so busy being ambitious, it didn't bother being good. It was boring, and had none of the magic of the original (which I loved the first time I saw it in the theater. Most of the people who like it seem to go for pretentious high concept pieces that mistake moodiness for depth. Unfortunately, Valerian had much the same problems, plus neither of the leads could act their way out of wet paper bags. Sad when movies with such great potential fall so far.

Title should be Why these 2017 films flopped at the box office in the US. Look at some of these films worldwide. 329M foreign box office for The Mummy. It was a terrible film in the US, but do to its simplistic storyline and tons of action scenes, people in other countries boosted the worldwide total by 80. 4% for the Mummy. I couldn't even finish watching it from Redbox, but you can see why Hollywood continues to shell out money on all these summer blockbusters. They got the bust right at least.

Valerian was such a terrible movie. The two leads had no chemistry and it seemed as though they were acting through-out the entire film. When Dane DeHann would smile it would never reach his eyes and in all honesty he has the face of a serial killer. Cara is just way overrated. There was a lot of nothing happening and then everything happened in the last 20 minutes. So yeah, a complete shit film.

Valerian and the city of 1000 planets was probably more popular in France where the cartoons it is based on are much better known. This should be no surprise since Luc Besson is french and he's the one who gave us Nikita aka 'La femme Nikita' in the early 90s. I saw the movie and I really liked it. I liked Blade Runner 2049 and I concur with the comment that it is a stunning visual feast.

The Arthur was different but quite good, but more a surprisingly good movie on tv, but hardly worth a cinema ticket. Which is ridiculous high at 110 SEK(about 11-15 dollars) when not even 3D.
Monster truck was the same except I enjoyed it even more with its cuteness & humor that made it relaxing to to watch.
Choosing the Young MacGyver actor was a perfect match.

the main problem that i had with Valerian, was not that the leads were new. it was that they were rubbish! And the bit at the beginning with the smooching was difficult to watch because of this ( ans that they look like brother and sister, with the matching grumpy slack face). Its disappointing, as it was a beautiful looking film, and i thought the intro was epic.

Please give more data for every moive then just it's gross domestic earning. I understand americans have an over inflated sense of patriotism but in this case to determine if it was a financial failure we need to see gross worldwide earnings as you showed in the transformers one breifly, as it is painting a false narrative as they still make a crapload of money.

I'm sorry, but the Valerian flopped (at least outside of the US, where everyone knows who Luc Besson is and would watch anything made by him) because Cara and the other lead actor had no chemistry and no charm, Cara is simply a bad actress, and the whole movie is weird and looks like you're watching someone's performance on a Sony Playstation rather than a movie.
