The First Dune Game 32 Years Later: An LGR Retrospective

The reviews must flow! And the spicy subject here is the first computer game adaptation of Dune, made by Cryo Interactive and Virgin Games in 1992. Take control of Arrakis as Paul Muad'Dib Atreides, reclaiming spice mines from the evil Harkonnens and forming a Fremen army to dominate the planet! Early 90s MS-DOS game goodness.

Another game that I never even got close to for several reasons: the first is that there wasn't even a PC gaming market here in Brazil. Even if someone brought it from the USA for me, I still didn't have a PC. the first one my father bought was in 94 and only a year later he bought the multimedia kit to install games on CD-ROM. And even then there would still be two impediments, the first being English, which I hadn't yet learned. The second is that there were other much more interesting and attractive games like Flight Simulator, Prince of Percia, Need For Speed, DOOM, Test Drive, etc. But this particular RPG is so bad that reading the book is more interesting.

Heh, I just played through this (the Sega CD version, though) one over the past one or two months, not even knowing about it until then. I really loved it; I haven't been as engrossed with a game for quite a while. Sure, it's kinda clunky here and there, you're absolutely right about the sluggish end-game, and if you do some things wrong you can basically get stuck and have to start the whole game over again - but it has such a unique vibe and atmosphere, most of it probably coming from the art style (especially the beautiful colors) and the absolutely amazing soundtrack which I'm still listening to now.

The David Lynch movie is honestly kind of underrated. The extended TV cut is still flawed but solid and it's a shame they wouldn't let Lynch provide any creative or editing supervision so it's got the Alan Smithee credit. It's also worth noting that Harlan Ellison- the author/creator of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream praised the film as being better than Star Wars and David Lynch as a great filmmaker.
As neat as this game is though you should absolutely give Dune II a look as it's a landmark title in the Real Time Strategy genre that serves as the spiritual predecessor to Command & Conquer.

After playing the Hell out of Dune II like everyone did back in the day, I picked this up site unseen thinking it was another RTS. I was initially confused by it, but ended up adoring it. Such a cool adventure game that I think did really well by the universe. I got rid of my boxed CD-ROM copy many years ago and I'm so annoyed at myself for it because it's bloody insane to buy on eBay now and I'm sure will only get more expensive in light of the new movie and well, this video. :) Once I start my streams back up, I'm hoping to do a runthrough of this. The music is still burned into my brain.

In the house I grew up, the family computer was in my bedroom. I would be asleep late at night, and awaken to the sounds of my Mother playing this game on our old AST Windows 3. 1 PC. The music was unmistakable, and still to this day, I remember it. But, I also had a fair number of nightmares because of the game, because of those freaky looking Harkonens, who absolutely terrified me as a small child. Still. it was always funny to know my mother was obsessed with beating the game, and spent hours playing it, just like I am now when I play more modern games.

I remember playing Dune 2000 on PC as a kid, and I really loved the look of it being kind of like Command & Conquer but in a desert. Little did I know it would turn out to my one of my favourite franchises after finding out it was based on a series of sci-fi books of the same name. I have to thank Denis Villeneuve for introducing me to that world.
This game though looks like I would have had a blast playing had I known it existed back then.

There have been a small and vocal number of us who have been championing Cryo's masterpiece over the decades. It did RTS before Dune 2. It's a real-time adventure game that's fully-voiced. It had an open world with a day/night cycle and recruitable companions. It was absolutely marvellous both from a technical and gameplay perspective. And it deviated from the original book AND the film of the same name!

I had this game as a christmas present in 1992 and we didn't have a soundcard in our 386 dx40 yet. I just remember how we waited for our dad to buy that soundcard and he did one year later. I just remember how I couldn't stop playing this game after we installed soundblaster pro into our pc. It still sounds amazing. And looks. I've also been a Dune fan ever since I first time played this game.

My introduction to Dune was the PC game, Dune 2000, based on the C&C game engine. I played that game for countless hours, many an all-nighter spent pushing back and forth against my friend's impenetrable fortresses (and they against my own) while we chugged the cheapest energy drinks we could find.
I also played the Sega Genesis version of Dune 2 quite a bit. Ah, memories.

You should have plugged the MT32 for this one! And SB1 for audio to have the voices centered. I prefer the floppy version anyway. The newest movies kinda suck, you feel nothing, Villeneuve can't handle emotions, DV and Zimmer are the most overrated and incompetent guys in the business. You can win the game using terraforming no

Fully agreed in that it becomes real grindy, but it's a real neat and unique game where genres blend surprisingly well. :)
I really want a sequel to this video too, looking at Dune 2 - it's definitely an influential game, and that superb Frank Klepacki soundtrack is ironically one of my go-to DOS FM tests.

I talked recently with Stephane Picq. According to IMDB there is a short easteregg in the new Dune movie. Gurney Hallek plays a short melody thats the Intro music to old Dune game.
Stephane was unsure if its exactly HIS music, but I think its at least very close. Would be a nice reference by Villeuneuve

Europe and Japan so often get amazing box art compared to ours in the States. One of my favorites is for Mega Man 1 on NES, the PAL box art looks like Mega Man the live action movie we never got, and the U. S, well, you know what we got. Mega Derp. But there's a thousand examples as u know.

The irrigation and rejuvenation of Dune had a lot of promise - plants slowly spread north, toward the Harkonnen strongholds, which removed the spice deposits and made the Harkonnen abandon those regions. Unfortunately it was far too slow to yield any results, but still pretty awesome!

The Westwood sequel Dune II is actually far superior, but I rank both of them as being groundbreaking predecessors to future RTS-games. Command & Conquer released a few years later perfected the concept, even down the the soundtrack.
Frank Klepacki composed both!

Never watched any Dune movie. Did read two books though. In the novel, Gurney Halleck's mug is specifically described as the exceptionally ugly. For some unknown reason, I always imagined Ron Perlman as a perfect actor for the role

19: 04: should be noted that the Spice Opera cd rearranges tracks from different versions of the game. For example Sign of the Worm is the title track for the Amiga version while Ecolove and Free man are the main Amiga gameplay tracks.

I remember this game! While the sequel holds a place in my heart, this game has gotten me into the Dune universe established in the David Lynch film, on both the DOS and Sega CD versions. I also loved the Dune Theme, as well.

I tried this game as a non-native English speaking kid back in the day, when they used to sell those giant compilations of DOS games on one CD/DVD with like 300 of them. Couldn't figure out what the hell am I supposed to do.
