Actually, we DO have proof (potentially) of Theia's existence: analysis of seismic waves passing through the earth has revealed some rather large masses of material buried deep within Earth's mantle that don't appear to share the same characteristics as the surrounding rock. One suggested theory is that that is because the material in these masses did not come from Earth, but from Theia; the idea is that they got buried when the two planets collided and Earth reformed afterward.
