The life of Henry Box Brown is so notable because he was an Antebellum-Era Virginia plantation slave who managed to mailed himself to freedom in a wooden box. The big question here is: how did he do it? Easy! He had the help of abolitionists on both ends of his journey. However, his story does not end there. What did Henry Box Brown do once he reached freedom? He spoke out against the institution of slavery, worked as a magician, and lived a very interesting life. Among other Henry Box Brown facts are his marriage to a white Englishwoman as well as the fact that Frederick Douglass didn't like him

Very interesting video, but in one known abolitionist besides Frederick Douglass and all them Harriet Tubman was one but the one I think he forgot and actually would probably be a good thing to do on weird history is John Brown he was an abolitionist too and he's my five times great-grandfather yeah everybody says he was crazy but you know what I'm proud of him standing up and there's a fascinating history about it when he died when they hung him 2 years later the exact same date at the exact same time the first bullet of the civil war was shot

The Western world and esp. Europe try to silence the atrocities of slavery. This IS absolutely the worst atrocity committed of the world hands down. Other nations cannot hold a candle in comparison to the Wrstern countries in the slavery dep. Westerners are always the winner. Those consequeces will haunt europeans and americans for generations.

The Abolitionists were mainly Christians, and they broke off from the Whig party (the liberals) to form a new, one-issue party, the Republicans. The issue: end slavery. Yes, the Democrats were pro-slavery, and have shown strong slavery (of all colors) and racism ever since. Look up the histories the two parties.

It's all too easy for free born or white abolitionists to decry box for turning his back on the problem. They're not the ones with the threat of being returned to slavery hanging over them. What did they know about being a slave? No-one sold their children away.

Imagine you finally escape, you settle into the routine of everyday life and then you hear from a friend about the fugitive slave act. Your heart starts beating faster and your stomach drops to your ankles. That must have been terrifying.

One of the first stories I heard during black history month as a child up north. I had to be 8 years old bc every year we had a black history play and my best friend played him, I was Mary McLeod Bethune. Do her next

As cool as this story is, him publishing it basically meant that all large boxes leaving the South were inspected to keep other slaves from mailing themselves. I guess fame was more important than helping others.
reply

Wow. I did a project on him back when I was in 8th grade. The fact that he escaped in a box was the reason why I chose to research him in the first place. This video would have been great for that.

I remember reading that book, talk about a crazy ride to freedom, btw I think the guy deserves to have it easy after escaping to freedom and avocating agents slavery for a long time.
reply

This video is missing a major fact. At some point he had the opportunity to buy his slave family back because someone contacted him about them and he declined - even though he had the money
reply

What an idiot tho. Destroying your hands for that. He could have broken one of his bones and that would heal eventually easy peasy. Anyway, cool story about some dude nobody ever heard about.

He didnt get his wife and kids out of slavery. He left and started a new life so hes not much of a hero to me. Josiah Henson got his freedom and took his wife and kids. Now thats a man!

I feel like there was a lot glossed over in regards to his physical health and condition after that trip. But you got me wanting to learn more and that's the point aint it?

There's a replica of the box here in Richmond, VA along the Canal Walk at Dock & 15th Street. You can get into it to see how small it was. Amazing anyone could endure that.

you should totally do a story on Fionna Apple! Please, pretty please! (also what a story, I glad he choose him, he had already fought his war nd one is enough for any life time

You know what would make a really weird. weird history episode. how black people sold each other for a mirror and a bag of sugar. let's just ignore that fact though.
reply

Its important to use verbiage like Enslave African American, instead of slave. His life shouldnt be minimize as slave as if it was a respectable employment.

Why was he the only one who left the south via a box? I would bed he wasn't the only one, just the one who also made it into the public's eye for this feat.
