If you've ever played the video game Nioh, you might have noticed a tall, ax-wielding, black samurai named Yasuke. Maybe you're a fan of the Afro Samurai anime. Perhaps you're a Hollywood insider all about Lionsgate's Black Samurai film, which was announced in spring 2017. All of these projects are based on a real person. Yasuke was an African samurai who arrived in Japan with Jesuits during the Sengoku period

a) He did not escape slavery. He was given a ceremonial weapon and the task of entertaining Oda Nobunaga while serving as his bodyguard.
b) Samurais were actually not free in feudal Japan as in having the political freedom to self-determination. If a master wanted his bond servant--which is what a samurai ultimately was--dead, you would commit ritual suicide in front of him without question.
c) Yasuke was not considered Japanese. The Japanese weren't blind, neither had they ever read Ibram X. Kendi. There are several accounts describing how appallingly dark Yasuke was to the Japanese. Also, according to one account, when Yasuke's master, Nobunaga, was defeated by Akechi Mitsuhide and forced to commit seppuku (yes, that's how defeated samurais could die with honor back in those days, your beloved black samurai was brought before Akechi, the warlord actually LET HIM LIVE because he considered the black man an animal and non-Japanese and should thus not be killed.
Sorry to interrupt your black worship. But please continue.

I heard stories of him in my research of Japan, all was good info but I thought it was just a meth. thanks for sharing this. My bucket list is to go to Japan and learn more about the history culture and to further my education with the katana and many different martial arts styles. It's all amazing such a culture that once you embrace it it's as if you become connected to nature and despite it's use for combat it truly helps unlock some form of peace and harmony. .

Yasusuke was not a samurai
Yasusuke was like a pet monkey to his lord Nobunaga.
As evidence of this, when Nobunaga was assassinated at Honnoji Temple, he was captured and released without question, saying, This is an animal that is neither human nor samurai. ''
Also, Yasuke was very rude and didn't learn table manners and was always eating with his hands.
Much like today's blacks, who are far from loyalty, courtesy, and discipline.

this is a great story. proving that racism isnt natural or something we are born with. we can all respect and appreciate and participate in each others cultures if you just want to. but people dont want to so we will probably never see that point. makes me sad, but hearing stories like this brings me joy

There is no historical evidence that proves he was ever made samurai. Most videos get their reference from African samurai by Thomas Lockley and Geoffrey Girard which takes artistic liberties and assumptions that are not directly stated in the historical evidence. Yusuke was never a samurai.

Funny how don t explain that the portuguese took im to Japan from Africa because that had a colony in Japan (Nagasaky. Yasuke came to Japan from Africa. on foot? Also that for 40 years (since 1543) africans where seen in Japan because portuguese settlers and traders had slaves.

In 1581 he gave him the rank of samurai? I would like to see the sources on this cause I haven't seen any call him samurai. I'm pretty sure that would have been written down. Especially since he wasn't forced to commit seppuku with Nobunaga, that would have been spoken about as treason.

Unfortunately yasuke's story is romanticised revisionist history. as far as the records show yasuke was never granted the title of samurai and was in service to nobunaga as a sword bearer and there is absolutely no record of yasuke taking part in any battles. Fun story but mostly fiction

Seems Black color in Japan is held highly. Black Belts, Black cats are seen as symbol of good luck, Black dragon, black statues. I respect Japanese culture for being unique and refusing to be influenced easily.

Im appreciative of the burdens Yasuke had to carry through the rest of his life. The souls of his lords must of weighed heavy. But he carried their memories and honor with his spirit and existence.

This story had my attention the entire time. What a badass. I watched the anime on Netflix too. I know it was mostly fiction, but it has made me go down the rabbit hole about this person.

He wasn't a foreigner, there has been Black men in Japan from the beginning. The history of Black civilizations is whitewashed and purposely distorted. It's a global falsehood.

I'm very sure yasuke met hideyoshi. Hideyoshi was In oda's first inner circle and one of oda's most trusted and loyal guy. If yasuke met ieyasu, I'm sure he met hideyoshi.

This is amazing, I ask you all to research who are the first Japan inhabitants. Its is amazingly African migration and features begin to change

You spelled Ieyasu with an L but get a full pass for an almost perfect pronunciation, my dude. Even I couldn't say his name without practice.
reply

Please The way his name was butchered. [Yas-Kay] is the way to say it guys. Made me cringe every time. Otherwise, very great story!
