This version of Russian history is very simplyfied and has got many facts which was created by foreign professors invited to Russia in 18th century who considered Russians as barbarians. Many ancient manuscript had disappeared and we have many ancient facts corrupted. Learn more about Lomonosov's biography(great Russian scientist, who lived then) Facts about absence of writing system among ancient Slavs are also wrong, because they had bukvitsa - alphabet which consisted of 54 letters-symbols. It's proved by latest excavations in the ancient city Great Novgorod. People wrote to each other on birch's rind 1000 years ago.

Okay, I rarely critique Ted-Ed's videos but the creation of the alphabet is not because of Russians becoming Christian. And it involved not only Byzantine scholars. Why does the Western world think all Slavic culture began with Russia? Please do your research better next time.

There's nothing particularly special about origins of Russia. You can ask the same question about most other European countries (except Hungary I suppose. People were there for centuries but they didn't form countries. until they finally did.

Basically, this is a story about Ukraines history. Russia became Russia only in 17 century. Before it was called Moskovia, after the city of Moskow. In opposition Ukrainian was called Ruthenians or Rusyns prior to 20 century.

You wrong. When Kiev had been captured by Mongols, center of Rus' hadn't came on Moscow. Because Golden Order's occupation it had born kingdom of Rus' which situated on the West outskirts of today's Ukraine.
