Why Venice is Europe-s Worst Placed City
video description
for the tourism/overcrowding part of it then can ban or strictly limit the tourists going to the island part of the city and do tv documentaries and online virtual tours, they could possibly even start a new tourism/cottage industry where like 5-10 people a day are let in maybe 20-30 if it gets popular, and they have high quality camera equipment and go where the people online vote or asked or paid for ahead of time to go film/see/explore. eventually they could offer the pre-produced tv shows and the archived live streams at one minimal price point on a streaming service while charging slightly higher or moderately higher for the live streaming/exploration/live tourist tiers where the tourists guide the tours/excursions
a portion of the profits could go to fund historical preservation efforts and another portion could go to fund the locals living on the island part of the city that were so inconvenienced by the tourists for so long.
you would still have some in person tourists, but so many people who dont want to travel or dont want to deal with costs paperwork red tape and vaccinations required for travelling, would just watch the video tours instead.
i mean pbs tv network in the usa is hugely helped/funded every year by replaying old rick steeves europe travel shows its one of their biggest fundraiser drive draws every 3-4 months (still ridiculous they do fundraisers now every fiscal quarter instead of just once a year or once every 2-3 years like they did when i was a kid, and that now they often only show the good programming when a fundraiser goes on instead of all the time like they used to do) so you know the novelty and tourism value of being able to tour a major historical place like venice or the vatican from the comfort of home and guide the people filming it to go where they want them to go would bring in a lot of money potentially.

Only a fraction of Venice's population (-60, 000 people) lives in the old part (centro storico) on the islands. The vast majority of people lives in mainland Venice.
Mainland Venice is neither drowning, nor is it car-free. It also doesn't have too many visitors either. Most tourists visit only the old part, of course.
So the only the old part of Venice is in any danger. Mainland Venice is not. And the homes of most people living in the city aren't either.
The video suggests otherwise and is therefore pretty misleading. Especially when claims like -80% of the city- are used but it's actually just 80% of the old part which is only a very small part of modern day Venice.
Worst case scenario: Venice looses it's onld parts long-term. Sure, it would be shame because it's a very special and beautiful part with a lot of historical significance, but it's not the huge desaster this video seems to suggest.

The geography of Venice was its greatest strength in the very turbulent times of the past. My favorite story about it comes from when the Lombards attempted to siege the city. When the Lombards moved hills Northern Italy there weer not a sea power by any young. The lined the shore for months, but got nowhere. Eventually the Venetians lifted the siege by installing some catapults on some of their ships and sailed towards the starving Lombards on the shore and launching loaves of bread at them to the Lombards how useless if was to try and starve out Venice.

I may have added to the tourist -problem- but I feel genuinely lucky that I got to go with my husband and oldest kid in 2018. My oldest was 2 and won-t remember but we will always have pics and videos. It-s sad to think my youngest may never get a chance to see Venice. It was truly a dream. Everything I studied that I was truly interested in (art major, and lover of European history) was all there.
I will always be grateful for that trip.

Wait, ive been to Venice a couple of times for sure. Thats not what Italy looks like from the air, even at that kind of altitude. Mountains dont ever appear to be like a desert. Someone needs to reedit this feed and for accuracy. Otherwise, well people might misconstrue the purpose of the video. Or, people whove never seen Italy from the air, might think. why does N. Italy look like a desert?

What a lot of people seem to ignore, is Venice is basically the extension of the west roman empire. It was founded by refugees from around the core of the empire, a large part directly from rome, and as the empire crumbled, the last of the wealths was accumulated in and around Venice and that was used as foundation for the future endeavours.

Venice is so tiny infact that we could make a 1: 1 size replica of the entire city, populate it with -200k NPCs have it be affected by virtual tides and have some rudimentary water physics map the flow of water thru the city. And still have 50 or so gigabytes left before reaching 100 gigs.

Small correction: Venice, as in the touristic destination in the lagoon, is NOT 260k people. Venice's administration extends to the land and city of Mestre where most of the inhabitants actually are. So the 1 out of 4 people being tourist is wrong. The ratio is much higher.

GMO some of the nearest Mangrove trees to be able to better withstand the colder temperatures and plant little forests in the appropriate surrounding areas. They protect against the tides, collect sediments, and are the most efficient forests at converting co2.

Why would anyone go to a city just because it's big? The bigger it is, the more full of crime, the uglier the architecture and worse pollution, the more atomised the community, etc etc. American city-dwellers are baffling to me if this is how they think.

You have no idea how much drame there is in Italy around the MOSE. To this day it's pretty hard to understand if it was a good idea or just a huge waste of money, i guess time will tell on how effective it is at protecting one of our cultural centers.

Venice was a city made out of desperation rather than intentional planning. Venice was settled by Roman citizens who fled aquilea after the huns destroyed it. They basically scrambled to find shelter nearby that the huns wouldn-t come for.

I don-t really agree that these coastal places are so horribly placed. Venice would have been broke until recently (or maybe always) if it were safely tucked away in a mountainside. Same thing with New Orleans.

Venetians survived the fate of Rome, in fact it's one of the cores of european aristocracy as we know it, through ages. I'm pretty sure many City banksters have venetian origins, which makes sense to world management.

Greenhouse gasses have little to do with sea level. Our planet just has natural cycles where it goes slightly closer or futher from the sun and thats what causes the cyvles of rising ald lowering of the sea level.

There are no roads on Venice, if you are suffering a stroke on the east side of the island, by the time you reach the hospital on the west side on the mainland, you-ll be dead
