In the early days, the Iberian Peninsula consisted of various separate countries with distinct cultures. However, following the Reconquista, there was a strong push to unify them into a single nation. One by one, these territories fell under the control of Castilla, with the exception of Portugal.
Portugal, despite being surrounded by the sea on one side and facing a powerful neighboring country with a large army on the other, managed to maintain its independence against all odds. It's incredible to think that Portugal should not have existed logically, but thanks to the resilience of its people, it not only survived but thrived.
Seeking resources for self-defense, Portugal took to the seas, embarking on an extraordinary journey that ultimately led to one of the most significant events in human history: full-scale globalization. They established the first true global communication network, connecting Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. This endeavor brought immense wealth to Portugal and left an indelible mark on the world.
Portugal's identity is deeply rooted in its perpetual resistance to becoming Spanish. In a way, it depends on Spain to define its purpose. This concept has been instrumental in Portugal's historical narrative, even if it remains largely unrecognized by many Portuguese people.
So, thank you Spain! -

countries in europe tend to be small and I used to say that square meter in the continent is expensive as hell! Mainly because of all the history behind of the european tribes. We had to fought a lot of battles to have our independency and houses safe. Portugal and Spain are not exception. We are brothers yes, but we've been different since long ago and that is why we portuguese never accepted to be conquered. Nowadays, Spain is a united country but we all know that should be AT LEAST 4x different countries inside. Galicia, Castilla y Leon, Euskadi and Catalunya should be independent. Their cultures are different from each other.
The huge difference was, back 900 years ago, Portugal was the only territory in Iberian Penninsula to have the enough strengh to be indepedent and defend their boarders.

We weren't conquered because we wanted to remain who we are. I think from a perspective of diversity we were right. Our language would probably have become a form of Portunhol just like modern day Galego is a form of Portunhol. I have nothing against Spain, in fact I like it a lot and it resembles Portugal a lot. May be Italy is the only country that (in regions at least) seems even closer to us but who knows. Just my perception. But liking other countries does not mean we actually want to join them.

As a portuguese, the smartest thing the Spanish kings did over the centuries was to name Spain. Spain. Before that there was Castilla. By alligning the new Castillan + Aragonese crowns under the name of Spain (derived from the roman name for the ENTIRE PENINSULA Hispania. it led the country more of a historical weight in the eyes of the ignorant onlooker.
It'd be like tomorrow the portuguese government saying we are going to change the name to Iberia. Us portuguese should have thought of that.

Spain tried to invade and was beaten many times.
Even Napoleon himself arrived here and didn't even stay here for a day, he was even betrayed by his war general and right-hand man who joined Portugal.
Here are some facts behind our success, we were the ones who invented the navy, we were the ones who invented the square military strategy, we were the first country in Europe to appear and we were the first to travel the world in boats that we invented, such as Naus.

Oh my god, what is with people that just want countries to overpower others, let people live in peace next to eachother, portuguese people are an independent nation and people, older in formation than Spain, that will never allow anyone, Spain or another to rule us, period. You may try, maybe you will suceed, although i doubt it, but don't think we will go down easily, it will cost you dearly, have no doubt, and spanish people know it.

I personally get chills just by learning portugal-s history, warrior people who always were few against many, and fought bravely against the romans, then the muslims, spanishes, were the first to explore the oceans and managed to become the first global empire. As a brazilian I am proud of my portuguese ancestry.

This question demonstrates a total lack of knowledge of the history of both countries, and seems to show a poor academic record. Since we are in this wave of ignorance, we can answer as follows: why does Spain not form the Andalusian Union with Morocco, since both countries were once part of the same kingdom?

Yeah, the Spanish 'Thought' of conquering them but when they amassed their army and were about to go in= they saw how ugly the women were, they weren't even sure if they were women and thought maybe they were only all men, they decided the men there had it rough enough and showed them mercy.

The real question is -Why wasnt Spain conquered by Portugal? -.
The answear: We cant stand them. They are annoying. We could annex Galicia though. They are cool. But then the rest would be jealous and wanted to be annexed too. Too risky.

-Why wasn't Portugal conquered by Spain? -
short answer: napoleon's armies, which upended balances of power and boundaries throughout europe. aragon was also considered a quasi-autonomous kingdom, with ties to england before napoleon.

Why is Portuguese quite different from Spanish? If the Portuguese spoke the same language as the Spaniards, Portugal may have survived as a province of Spain. Language makes a big difference in the history of mankind.

the buried assumption here is that somehow Spain went easy on Portugal, when in fact that's the furthest from reality. what you didn't mention, were all failed attempts of Spain to conquer the Portuguese.

At this point, Brazil is now a more important economic power than either Spain, Portugal, or any of the other colonies of either nation. And Brazil is unified in speaking Portugese language.

i would say that the alliance with England was a major part why Spain didn't try to conquer Portugal, also the role Brazil took during Napolean invasion, cemented that alliance

Basically, the English are the main reason why Portugal remained independent.
I don't see mentioned here that the portuguese language came from current Galicia.

The reason Spain did not conquered Portugal is that they weren't able to. They can barely hold on to their own internal conflict with independence movements xD
