I like how these videos are short and informative, but I just wish you paced them about 10-15% slower. The narration is incredibly rushed to where sentences run together with no seeming natural pauses between phrases. I get that quickly flashing some caption on screen as a parenthetical aside remark is often used as a form of whit and comedic irony, but they are shown so quickly that its nearly impossible to read them without pausing the video, which is likewise difficult because by the time I see theres text Im not going to be able to read and move to pause the video, its already gone and moved onto the next thing. Reading the text or looking at what a map is showing is often extremely difficult while trying to keep up with the break-neck narration. In terms of deciding to click on a video, theres very little difference at least for me between a 3 minute and a 5 minute video. Itd be great if these could be slowed down a touch. Im honestly bewildered how people watch these without difficulty.
Maybe Im just slow.

2/3 of the Frenchmen mobilized in the armies during WWI have fought at Verdun, that's a lot of people, it's not surprising Dreyfus has fought there too. The French war doctrine changed a lot during this battle, the changes were a major turning point of the conflict and one of the reasons why the French won this battle, and the war. Along with huge efforts to mecanize the army, the troops turnover introduced at Verdun allowed the poilus to keep their morale, 2 weeks at the frontline, 2 weeks in the back, 2 weeks on leave. So Dreyfus went through the hell of Verdun just like any other Frenchmen, nothing outstanding about it. Dreyfus was a patriot despite what happened to him, so he'd have fought anyway, and he didn't have the choice, he'd have faced sanction if he refused to fight, and sanction for deserters at that time could be death.

The most bizarre detail is that recent research, published in 'History Today', revealed that to cover up military weapon research, the French military set up a parallel research project 'administered' by Esterhazy. So the Germans would go chasing after information on that, rather than after the 'real' project! But counter-intelligence got hold of a letter written by the corrupt and incompetent Esterhazy, who ran several brothels ) and everything got 'out of control', due to the the incompetent and rabidly Anti-Semitic Major Henri, who presided over the inquiry.

This situation resulted in the creation of the state of Israel. The Austrian-Jewish journalist Theodor Herzl reported about this affair, and it made him believe that assimilation of the Jews wouldnt be possible - not even in the liberal Western Europe. So he had to find an alternative for the sake of the Jews, and he found it in zionism. The Jews should have their own state, he believed. And so it happened.

Former French, previously German before that. would be more accurate. The regions traded back and forth for centuries, but Lorraine, originally known as Lothringen, was an integral part of the Frankish kingdom (who were ethnically and linguistically German, and was part of the German Holy Roman Empire. Travel through most of the region and the people and languages are primarily German/Germanic

Mind you that all this happened in France AFTER the liberte, egalite, fraternite BS. So what was achieved? Was it worth it? AND more importantly. after witnessing what the french army does to it's own to cover up the general staff. what credibility did the generals have in 1939 among the troops?

Let's not forget that Esterhazy, the guy who actually leaked the information, literally confessed to a newspaper 8 years before Dreyfus was pardoned. Also, Zola was trying to go to trial by writing J'accuse so he could bring up witnesses who would support Dreyfus.

Im reminded by how even though Duras sold out khitomer to the romulans it was mogh that was condemned for it. Yet even after this information was brought to light, gowron didnt completely fix the situation because it would lead to a lot of political trouble on Qonos.

Our main man went back to war after all this? After his country, MY country betrayed him to such an extent, he still went back to war to keep it free?
The man's even more or a legend than I thought. I am French and I did not know that, wp History Matters.

France is the little brother with the life set on easy mode in Europe. G. Britain is the older brother, they had a sibling rivalry. Germany is the kid down the block with all the cool toys always trying to prove he's cool.

Man Europe has done so many terrible things to Jews no wonder they have so much guilt. But that guilt shouldnt be thrown on us in the Middle East, you cant just let us pay for your guilt and crimes pay for them yourselves.

Jews? Being accused of traitors with no loyalty to their country despite showing far more valour and graft in supporting it than the people accusing them?
Good thing that wouldnt last long after this, right?

Theodor Herzl the founder of modern zionism was present during the public humiliation of Dreyfus that led him to the conclusion that Jews will never be safe from Antisemitism unless they form a state.

The well on this topic is so thoroughly poisoned by a particular groups tribal loyalty that theres truly no getting to the bottom of what happened. Much of the same energy as the Leo Frank incident

I upvoted, but I am curious as to why the French Army's anti-semitism in convicting Dreyfus was rendered as they were accused of. They were anti-semitic and then stubbornly arrogant.

This Dreyfus was a hell of a guy to be willing to fight for his country after al that, I'd buy flags of my country just to wipe my ass with them if I had been treated like that

In short, conservatives forge evidence, wrongfully convict an innocent, commit anti-Semitism, let the real criminal go with impunity, and overall, just suck.
Figures.

FWIW, The Dreyfus Affair is what made Theodor Herzl decide there was no way Jews would ever be free except in their own country, and in 1897: Voila: Zionism.
