This week, we're headed north. To check out the gods of the Northmen. Or the Norse. That's right, we're talking Thor, Loki, Freyr, Freya, Odin, Frigg, Baldr, and Tyr. And Fenrir. And the Frost Giants. There's a lot to cover here, and it's going to be fun. Watch this prior to Ragnarok, as this video probably won't be available after the end of the universe. Most people associate Norse Mythology with Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, but where else do the stories of this belief structure originate?
What are the Vanir and the Asir? What does each represent? Give an example of a god that would belong to each category.
What similarities do you see between the Norse pantheon and the Greek or Egyptian pantheons? List at least 3.
How did Thor end up in a wedding dress?

reply

Heimdall, the White God, yet political correectness don't care and in the series of Thor he is the VERY opposite: he is black.
I didn't know there was immigrants in scandinavia (and mythical kingdoms) that early.
Priests talking about Heimdall -Lets describe him as the white god, so future generation won't mess with his skin colour-
Centuries later, blackwasher messed his skin colour

Thank you for bringing up the later association with Greek and Roman pantheons. This has caused a lot of confusion in understanding Norse mythology. Norse traditions did NOT have a -god of. - system. There is no -Norse god of X-. That is a Romano-Greek convention to which the Norse pantheon has been mangled and deformed to try and fit.

you need to know that the R in Frey is silent, Odin hung himself on the world tree to see all 13 runes, and Kvasir is the wisest not Bolder. Loki actually took mistletoe, Bolder's only weakness, and guided Hod to shoot it at Bolder. Loki is also a giant.

Baldur wasn-t in Niflheim. He was in Helheim. Hiflheim is one of the two primordial realms (along with Muspelheim, the realm of eternal cold and darkness. Helheim is the realm of the dead ruled by the Goddess Hel

the prose edda was written relatively new but it predated the judeochristian invasion and cultural shift that may have influenced the norse mythology and freya had a lynx chariot probably
reply

The Aesir are giants, just a specific family of them known as -Aesir, - so, Loki is a giant and was blood brothers with Odin, making him part of the Aesir family
reply

-According to one version, Odin hung himself from the World Tree so he can drink the Mead of Wisdom. -
Did you not mention that he was barking mad?

reply

Morse mythology, Prose Edda in particular is FULL of metaphors. The best example how everyone interprets the myth about how Freya got her famous necklace.

Jupiter: Origin=Thor, Zeus. (Gods of lighting)
Mars: Origin=Tyr, Ares. (Gods of war)
Mercury: Origin=Heimdall, Hermes (Gods of speed)
Interesting
